they had a show in the 1970s called Night Gallery. One of the shows dealt with a sin eater. Excellent story.

Thank you Kari, as always for the information you provide us. More importantly, thank you so much for replying to my severe loss of my cat Scrunchie. The tears have kept flowing for 3 weeks since he passed away. I finally had to reach out to a friend, who had a Pastor call me. We were on the phone for close to an hour, and it was helpful. I cried again today, but no tears flowed. I think my tear ducts must be depleted by now. But as you said to me in your reply, "Losing a pet is a pain unlike anything else." When I have the strength, I will fill my cremated remains necklace, with some of Scrunchies ashes. Thank you for everything. Joe, from North Carolina.

No one really knows what actually happens to our soul after we die. I like to think we start in a new human life somewhere. All I do know is on April 25, 2018, I almost died. I felt fine one minute, then, for some unknown reason, I was falling asleep and a bunch of alarms started going off and a nurse saved my life. My heart rate dramatically dropped at that point. I'm convinced, we fall asleep or pass out before we actually die. The way we get to that point might not be pain free. Nurses Rock!

Fascinating how there are so many traditions related to death/mourning/funerals. It’s odd that the sin eaters were helping the deceased and the family but instead of being thanked they were shunned.

Prior to playing John-Boy on The Waltons, Richard Thomas was in a television movie dealing with the topic of sin eaters. I've scanned the filmography section of his Wikipedia page and can't recall the exact title.

I saw a documentary awhile ago. It was an actual like film they possibly. made Very interesting. I wondered if that's where the tradition of having a meal after the funeral. A lot of churches did it here. Funeral directors here called it. THE JELLO PUDDING PARADE. Now meals are catered or in a restaurant. $$$....

I grew up in the Midwest and 1st you have a ceremony at the funeral home, than a church ceremony, and then a graveside ceremony. The attendees then proceed to a designated place (deceased persons home ,restaurant etc) for a full course dinner.

Also in the mountain folk/Hillbillies in Appalachia etc. Eating their sins, so they would be free from sin and make it to Heaven. That's that old belief. Also A movie called The Last Sin Eater- 2007. And in a TV movie "The incredible Journey of Doctor Meg Laurel" 1979.

I saw something like this, in the movie: Grudge 2. In a scene in this movie, it showed the mother of a young girl, who was supposed to be sort of a shaman, of sorts, take the blood of a possessed young woman & put the blood in her daughter's mouth, to take away the sin, of this woman. I also saw another movie, with a boy, who ate the sins of others, but that was sometime ago, so i don't remember the movie's title.

Kari love this topic , How does one Funeral Home get the deceased from another state or another country , then the other Funeral Home , bring them home to where they live and set up burial for that person.

This concept needs to be revived, but in an evolved form. The sin eater should take away the sins of the living. It could involve more ritual.
