What Is Acceptable Turbo Shaft Play?

Very good explanation of this issue Charlie, Does the play decrease even more once the engine is up to normal operating temperature, and all the different metals expand due to heat ?

Colder will feel tighter. Hotter will feel looser. If it is hot and sitting for a while then there will be even more play If you clean them out with brake cleaner then it has a fine of play

Thanks for your video. I have a 2004 Volvo that I suspect it had a bad turbo. I just removed it from the car. I have some side to side play, but I don't know if it's too much. I heard you mentioned that the fan blades will not touch the side. Mine has enough side to side that I can make the blades touch the side of the housing. Would that mean it was out of tolerance.

If it’s actually rubbing the housing then that indicates bearing damage. Probably a good idea to get it rebuilt

So my turbo (DBB) , fairly new , has zero shaft play… but if i JUST shut the car off i get play. It makes sense in my head but maybe im wrong. Is that normal?

Does anyone know if the IHI VF44 is a journal bearing turbo? I’ve got ever so slight side to side play and the guy I got it from says it’s journal bearing but it only has play if I wiggle it from the compressor side. If I wiggle the turbine it’s nonexistent

That’s normal. It’s a journal bearing.

Yes. It should free spin. It sounds like your turbos bearings are probably on their way out.
