This video made me realize why I always feel anxious in certain places where there isn't a background noise such as a fan or an air conditioner running to drown it out (which is why my AC's fan runs year-round) but I don't get that same anxiety in certain places such as old buildings, out in a forest, or some other places. I have extremely sensitive hearing and I must be hearing the humming sound of electricity. In places where there's a lot of appliances set up, or very large appliances, but not enough other sound going on at the right kind of tone to drown it out, my "silence anxiety" gets far worse.

I knew what the hum was as soon as you mentioned that it was different between the US and other countries. This is also the reason why analogue screens have different refresh rates in the US than other countries, because the TV casts each frame with the same frequency as the electricity. Since analogue TVs interlace (alternate between even and odd lines of a frame in order to increase refresh rate), the refresh rate of the TV is half of the frequency of the electricity going in.

When this video came out I would have been in high school, and after school I would wait in the warehouse my Dad works at. The microwave in the break room had the most comforting drone, and it would cycle in a procession period where the working components performed their tasks. The premium integrated microwave in my grandparents' house just doesn't sing the way the humble warehouse microwave did.

@@JamietheEmperor but it is. You see, most of these videos have their flow of topics, themes, explaining leading to the next point, and Scruffy complements that with music, or a hum in this case. So it does feels like a melody, a motive of sorts. You just need to see it. Also stop commenting useless, bare and hollow opinions (like "this -> bad" with no elaboration on why is that) on comments that are posted 2+ years ago. If I recall correctly, this is also the reason why almost all people hum the exact same note if you just ask them to hum any note. We're all listening to mains hum all day long, so without most people even realizing, that's just the "default" note to them. It also varies by location, so in places where mains hum is 100Hz they hum a G or G# I believe.

I remember crossing train tracks and hearing a hum when no sound from my headphones were playing. I theorized that it's because the mic that does the active noise canceling was picking up mains hum (i didn't know what it was called back then) and playing its reverse as to cancel its sound. I'm guessing then it is what i though, although I'm not sure. Either way, fascinating video about a topic I didn't know i could find fascinating. Good job!

0:34 I feel as I that disclaimer should’ve been a bit stronger, because there are several things on the inside of a microwave that can kill you. If you open it up you can expect A: A part that will instantly kill you if it’s plugged in B: A part that stops your heart before you hit the floor if you touch it before discharging it C: A part that if you break it and inhale the dust, will also kill you All this is to say, you really *really* do not want to fuck with a microwaves internals unless you are seriously experienced in electrical work, microwave internals kill a lot of hobbyists that wish to use certain parts because while they are extremely useful they are extremely dangerous and one wrong move is desth

There's something oddly sweet about a machine "humming" while its powered on. It's like people singing to themselves as they work, or whistling a tune. The knowledge that a microwave will hum while its powered on and a person could be whistling while they cook something in the same room makes it feel like electronics and humans aren't so different after all.

The entire track from 4:58 resonates with me and scratches that mystical itch I get when hearing odd electric appliance noises. By God, the subtle vocals are just perfect. Is there any chance we could hear it expanded into a short ambient track, or at the very least could you point me to the samples you used, if available anywher?
