As this video is very general about the functions and I started getting basic questions about the functionality, I decided to start making tutorial series for this instrument. First part is out now, more to come! Feel free to check this out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4HFeaungc-fmNE

Very nice video but i have a small comment on how you do vibrato. Whilst changing the air pressure does something to the sound, the ewi has a built in sensor in the mouthpiece that detects biting and other things. So biting/ hardening/softering the grip your mouth has on the mouthpiece will make a much nicer vibrato
@HelineFay5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm now aware of this, but as flautist this feels quite unnatural way to produce the vibrato. I'm glad both ways work though, as reed instrument players probably find the bite sensor more natural. I'll definitely get into the bite sensor technique at some point as I'm also very much interested in learning some sax when I get the chance!

I think the next addition to that wireless box would be a remote display that mirrors the display on the instrument so that during a performance you don't have to stop playing the instrument and move it away from your mouth in order to read the display to adjust the sound.
@HelineFay5 жыл бұрын
That would be handy. I'd also love to see a bit better quality on the sound bank sounds that try to imitate real wind instruments. Or maybe offer several separate sound banks in the future, so you could download whichever you need to the instrument. Recently I've been using some VST instruments to get realistic sounds but it's always a hassle changing them from PC :)

Thank you for your EWI reviews and tutorials! They are kind of "EWI for dummies", but it's ok for me. 99% of all EWI stuff on KZbin is done by saxophone players and it seems that they have a completely different view. I like to see the view of a flute player on this instrument.

At 9:00 and after, those sounds could be found in old-school sci-fi shows (I'm thinking Buck Rogers) and various cartoons of the 70s and 80s. And the second set of effects around this point in the video sound like something out of Classic Dr. Who. So, that's pretty cool!

I got EWI5000 I don't know where to find good tutorial I never played any wind instrument and I can barely play keyboard. Where should I start? thanks
@HelineFay5 жыл бұрын
This highly depends on your other background but first I'd suggest you to download the EWI editor from this site: www.akaipro.com/ewi5000 From the editor you can choose different things. If you're not familiar with playing wind instruments key delay should be rather higher than lower. I have it at 8, beginner should have it definitely higher. You can choose the fingering chart from settings, too. Flute is quite straight forward for beginner. It's quite similar to recorder if you have played it at some point in school. Charts you can find from the manual. I found it helpful first to disable the "Pitch Up" and "Pitch Down" plates from the editor. I don't think you'll need the bite sensor when starting out either. First things I noticed when I started playing was that the sound bank volumes were way too low and there was a bit too much reverb for my taste. I edited all of them to full/almost full volume and took the reverb down. Remember to save it to the User Bank from top of the editor. From EWI you can see which sound set you're playing, the preset or your edited one. The light is above the power button, green is for your modified bank and red for the original. After these modifications I would suggest to try out the breath sensor sensitivity. I noticed that I had to make it a bit more sensitive when playing with EWI inbuilt sound bank. When using VST instruments (EWI as midi device through USB) I have to make it less responsive. This you can also easily change from EWI itself. There's a knob below the mouth piece, under the removable lid. There's other useful knobs there, too, but I really only use that one. I hope this was helpful. I've been planning for ages to make a video for absolute beginners but haven't gotten into it. Maybe it's time to do that soon now that people have been asking these questions! :)

@@HelineFay Thank you so much for such detailed response. I managed to make sound and configure it somehow. Problem is all EWI tutorials that I found (and there is not a lot of them) people expect that viewer is already wind instrument player and don't even talk about fingering and wind instrument basics. I understand that EWI can be configured to have flute, saxophone and other fingerings, what would be most basic to learn? Also If I started watching flute or saxophon tutorial would I be able to follow it on EWI? Thank you
@HelineFay5 жыл бұрын
I would say flute fingerings are the most easy and logical ones for someone who hasn't played earlier. Obviously I'm a bit biased as flute player but still seems the most simple chart. The finger chart differs a bit from real flute and instruments so I would say you can't directly follow flute/saxophone tutorial. On EWI the air pressure changes the volume of sound and doesn't affect the pitch as in flute, so that's actually simpler. No need to modify the blowing to get different notes. I keep the EWI mouthpiece gently between my teeth so it stays still, but I'm not biting it. It also requires quite a lot of pressure and keeping your face "airtight" is a bit of a workout. I'm playing quite rarely so I still can't play that much at once (as this is completely different from normal flute) but you'll get used to it and can play longer times if you keep playing somewhat often. The mouthpiece is closer to reed instruments (oboe, clarinet, saxophone etc.) I would suggest getting familiar with the notes you can get out on one octave (not moving your left hand thumb between other rolls, just holding it between the 2 rough ones first). After you are somewhat familiar with the fingerings it's easier to get to the octave changes. EWI is nice in that way, no need to learn different fingerings to other octaves as in other instruments they change at least a bit.

Next time I would recommend spending more time on your personal thoughts (how does the weight feel, would you recommend for beginners, how sensitive is the bite mechanism, how natural is the fingering, how much resistance is on the buttons, etc.) about the instrument itself, and not the functionality since I can just read the instruction manual for that.

One question I have - yes, Akai has its own library of sounds that you can use with it, but given that it can interface with a computer, can you use it with a third party sound library? Say something from Native Instruments or IK Multimedia?
@HelineFay2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use it as midi instrument via usb or midi interface! This way you can use VST instruments

Hi Heline, thanks for your video. I was wondering if the USB in the remote is just for powering the remote or if it actually conveys information and can connect directly to the computer to control my logic pro for example, like the USB in the main body of the instrument can?

I have a problem with record music on EWI5000. When im turn on my AWI on Reaper for example, then EWI 5000 Editor.dll VST Plugin showing some strange windows with to Update your Service Pack 1 on your Windows(I have no windows XP so it's sounds like its not a point.) Why it's not working? Reaper see my EWI and is able to record someting, but without this plugin it's only piano sounds. You know how to fix it?

Why don’t you play it? It’s a flexible expressive instrument, maintenance free. Aren’t you artistically inclined?

It's an EWI5000 not a "Pro EWI5000" as there is no version of an Amateur EWI5000. Perhaps you should actually try playing it some time? For example, what do you think of patch number 9? Does it sound better than a "real" flute? So much potential for more from you. Best wishes.

I always wanted an instrument that has a... box, that takes the signals... LOL. Just kidding, nice review. If I could make a small comment: you could have done a bit more research before making a review, it looked like you were finding out things about the instrument while you were recording this. Oh, one more thing: it deserves to get played more often, you got a fabulous instrument in your hands, don't treat it as a gadget, make some music! But who am I telling what other people should do, at least you took the time to make a review for us. Keep up the good work.

You're absolutely right. I did some research but my notes were terrible haha. I learned a lot though how to do these kinds of videos and decided to upload it anyway. I'm also awkward in front camera when I talk and is not live streaming situation. Need to learn to talk without interaction. And definitely yes: So fun and amazing instrument! I've started playing it more again after a long break and realized how much I've missed playing with it. Thanks for the constructive comments!

What word do you normally use to talk about vibrato, like to your students for example? It strikes me as curious that you were uncertain of the pronunciation... it is Italian, like so many of the common musical terms - fortissimo, moderato,fermata, glissando, staccato, legato,.
@HelineFay4 жыл бұрын
I pronounce it in Finnish :D like "vibraatto" as written, with rolling R and all.
