I was put in a IEP class. I was taken out of my regular to go to that classroom everyday for a couple of hours, I think having an IEP made it harder for me. They took my out of my classroom to teach me something else, so I missed on learning on things my class was learning. This was in elementary. I remember on the first day of 1st grade, I told my mom I needed help just because I was scared and thought I was going to be alone. That’s all. When I got to middle school, I was pulled out occasionally, very rare, they treated me like as if I was incapable of doing thing, they thought I was incapable of learning stuff in a classroom. I’m in highschool, they continued to put me in classrooms with two teachers thinking it would make a difference. No. It did not. I was in a regular class, just with kiddos without it, and some with it. Having an IEP made people sorta treated me like I had a mental disability and I couldn’t do it on my own. I really don’t even need this dumb iep. Having an IEP is now embarrassing, I do not have special needs or need special help.

I had an IEP starting at the end of 8th grade. In which the IEP is there for my next 4 years all 4 years of high school. From 8th-9th grade, I was in a small school in which I needed an IEP, because I had conflicts with people and I actually met the requirements, but I didn't think anything of it. In 10th grade, I was in a traditional high school and I learned more about this IEP. Then at the end of 10th grade, I canceled my IEP! I feel more happier now and I can improve on my on. On the day I announced my IEP was cancelled many teachers were proud of me and on my side! Even one teacher was mad at one of the special education teachers!

I have an IEP. I feel like a lot of people believe that having an IEP mean that you're not as smart, dont know how to speak, or socialize normally. Students can have an IEP for different reasons. We can also have different accommodations. For me, I have the option to take my test in another room. I also have the option for my test questions to be read to me. However I read it myself because it's easier that way for me. A lot of teachers are very lenient and will allow for other students to do the same even without an IEP. But haveing an IEP just insures that options are available.

IEP, and I used to feel awful when I got the envolopes. I'm from Canada and remember feeling ashamed of myself in elementary school. When I was in grade 3, the teacher embarrassed me for doing grade 2 work in class. I didn't listen to my mother at the time, and that made me feel bad. When I was in sixth grade, I kept declining IEP because once you accept it, you must complete it through eighth grade. I had no disabilities at all, and in sixth grade, I didn't care about my iep or make an effort.wNow that I'm in grade 7, they continue to give me an IEP form, but they're taking it out because I try not and ima doing very well. Keep on trying and dont fool around do not give up.

Some of these comments shock me. If you have an IEP and feel like you no longer need it, then you need to speak to your parents and have them talk to the school. Have them change the IEP or remove it all together. Just because you have it one year doesn't mean you have to have it forever. Sounds like a lack of communication and a lack of listening to me. I am looking to get my son an IEP and these comments break my heart but I also feel like they are not being done correctly. Good luck to you all! Praying your voices are heard!

Yeah i had an IEP back in middle school thru highschool. I really felt like I didn’t need it I was doing so well in school with normal classes. Sadly the iep stuff just embarrassed me and made me feel like I was stupid. Sometimes they would bring in some teachers in my class specifically for me it was just embarrassing knowing I didn’t need there help (no offense) we had an iep meeting every year. NONE of my teachers even cared being there. And honestly it was the same thing every year, just the teachers always saying “oh he’s doing well” that’s it. Iep brought me embarrassment and stress in many ways and made me feel stupid like i would get taken away from classes to take some useless test or just to ask me questions like cmon man leave me alone😂. Ngl I appreciate the help like honestly but sometimes I feel they can go too far and exaggerate too much

First off, an IEP is a document, not a class. Most people on here are upset about a self-contained special education class that is part of the services outlined in your IEP. Depending on your needs, you may or may not be placed in a smaller setting or pulled out throughout the school day/week. Secondly, an IEP can be given for multiple reasons ( Look up exceptionalities; emotional, mental, and physical) and you can have a GIEP which means you are gifted. You can also have both. I have students who are gifted in math but have SLD in writing. An IEP does not mean that you are dumb, it means that you need an individualized plan to help access your education. The analogy that she used was giving glasses to someone who cannot see clearly or you can think about giving a step stool to someone who can't reach the top shelf. It doesn't give you an advantage or mean your less than, it evens out the playing field. You wouldn't think someone was dumb just because they were blind or deaf, they just need help doing certain things and/or do things a different way to achieve them. If you reach your goals, you may be moved to a 504 plan or exited altogether. It does not mean that your exceptionality has disappeared but that you have become independent and successful in utilizing your accommodations. My advice is that if you HATE your IEP and being in smaller classes, learn your IEP, discuss with your case manage what progress you need to make, and work hard. All of these high schoolers are part of their team due to their age, go to your annual meeting and speak up.

I got IEP in the 3rd grade, My mom held me back in 3rd grade because she didn’t think I was going to past the milestone, This made me hate school, I was embarrassed when I got pulled aside with test or subjects that I needed help with, When I seen my friend’s get advanced class I was upset sad and jealous, it made me feel dumb and like I didn’t have a chance at being successful in life, Around the end of the year in 5th grade I got out of IEP reading and felt happy and super proud of myself for once, I am determined to leave IEP for writing and math by the end of middle school transitioning into Highschool, You guy’s aren’t dumb and you do not have any less of a chance at anything in life then others, I am in 6th grade now, I know it hurt’s and it’s embarrassing and feel’s like a burden and hurts even more when you feel like your parents aren’t proud of you but I can assure you you’ll be fine ❤

In 6th grade, I was constantly babied and treated as if I knew nothing. My work was always highlighted, I was never allowed to do work on my own. It was terrible! I felt like a joke even though I was one of the top kids of my class, I was still treated as if I knew nothing! My classmates started thinking I knew nothing because of how I was treated, then my classmates never wanted to work with me because they thought I would do something messed up! Then pretty much most of my class mates didn’t want to hang out with me and just thought I was weird and crazy. Now I’m in 7th grade, things are doing better, better school, better teachers(except one teacher), and nicer students. There’s only one issue, my PE teacher. She always babies me and always singles me and my sis out from the class because she thinks that we will have a meltdown. She is always on me and saying weird things but… I guess that she is like that because I have an IEP. Well, things should get better.

My parents say no because it ruined my brothers life. And they don’t want that for me. It’s like my school won’t take a no they need to shut up and take no for an answer they have been trying since I was in 1st grade. My school sucks and I hate it. I have no problems with my speaking or hearing I am not a special kid.
@UnderstoodOrg4 жыл бұрын
Hi Meghann, Thanks for sharing your perspective. It sounds like you have a lot of good ideas and perspectives. An IEP, if it is determined that you could benefit from one, might give you supports to make testing less difficult. But one thing you should know is that if you are given an IEP, you are a member of the team. You should feel like you can bring up your concerns to the team to get them addressed. If you are over 16 years of age, you will be included automatically, but if you're younger you can request to come to the meetings and provide your own insights. You can learn more about the IEP team in this article "Who’s on the IEP Team" u.org/35aWQln We hope whatever happens, you are able to thrive. Best, The team at Understood

I feel like I’m on a level of a 9 year old even though I am in 8th grade. I wouldn’t call this a bad program but you should leave it or consider leaving after your disability has been minimized or gone, preferably gone. The IEP helped me get rid of my speech impairment but the so called Ela lessons are very easy to understand and don’t require any critical thinking. I feel like if you are working in a 4 or 3 person group they should at least be working at the same level as you are. Nonetheless I wouldn’t consider this program awful.

Unfortunately I am one of those students who don’t work well during online, but my grades were always pretty good, so if I get good grades again, can I leave iep???
@UnderstoodOrg3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimi Wu, Thanks for your question. IEPs are usually structured around goals for the child to achieve. If you are meeting or exceeding the goals in your IEP, then it is possible the school would exit you from it. You might want to talk to your parents or guardians about calling an IEP meeting and asking to attend. Students often attend their IEP meetings so they can advocate for themselves. You can learn more about this in the article "FAQs About Having Your Child Attend IEP Meetings" u.org/3iI2TEa We hope this helps. Best, The team at Understood

my son is in kindergarten and they are trying to put my son in IEP but he does not have a disability, i dont understand why they feel like he needs it so bad making me feel as if my son is so dumb or something. Yes he has behavior problems and sometimes is hard for him to make sentences but I want to agree to this iep only for one year of school to see how it goes but not all the way threw high school, I guess I'm just concerned that I won't be able to take him out of this once I agree

Hi Ma Denise - Thanks for your questions. An IEP is a written document that sets individual learning goals for your child and describes the supports, services, and educational program designed to meet a child’s individual needs that the school district will provide for your child. However, the school may provide your child with these services *ONLY IF* you agree. When your child is found eligible for special education and related services and you disagree with the decision, or you don't want your child to receive an IEP, you have the right to decline these services for your child. If your child does have an IEP, the school is required to hold an IEP meeting each year to look at your child’s progress and to develop your child’s new annual IEP, if you agree. But you don’t have to wait for this annual review. You (or any other team member) may ask to have your child’s IEP reviewed or revised at any time. Also, you may revoke your consent, in writing, special education and related services for your child at any time. You might want to check out these links to learn more: - Questions to ask before and during your child’s IEP meeting:u.org/3izHAor - What are your rights in the IEP process?: u.org/3uMn7mj - Learning disabilities by the numbers: u.org/36LOKmO We hope this helps!

Can a person from mental health be in an IEP meeting? If so or if not please reply to my comment.

Hi Jameson McC, thanks for your question. We have shared your question with one of our in-house experts for feedback. Once we hear back we will connect with you.
@UnderstoodOrg6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jameson McC, thanks for your patience. We've heard back from our expert, Rayma Griffin and here's what she had to say: Yes. Most IEP teams include the School Psychologist as a member of the intervention team. The School Psychologist may be there solely to discuss the results of the testing, but he may also address any mental health concerns for the child. If a child is seeing a Social Worker at school, that person can also attend the meeting. If a child is working with a mental health professional outside of school, the parent can also request that that professional be invited to the IEP meeting. As a parent, you can request that any person with direct knowledge about your child be included in the meeting. Request should be made in writing. This link has some information that might be helpful to you: dankingery.com/chapter_7_-_roles_of_iep_team_members.pdf Hopefully this answers your question. Thanks for reaching out to us, Rayma

IEP teams lack expert medical advice. They do not have a Doctor on staff. Sometimes a child who is born with a developmental disability is not diagnosed, the schools seem to try to impose psychiatric diagnoses for possible developmental disability. NOT ALL learning disability is ADD/ADHD and that is what psychologists lean toward. Often there is other dx like a cognitive impairment, ASD, CAPD, these are not essentially hearing disabilities, they are more along the line of how the brain puts together information that that is heard. The only person who is licensed to diagnose this is a MD Audiologist. School districts cannot afford Medial doctors and cant find enough MD Aud's so they try to give every one a dx of ADD/ADHD. The treatment plan is vastly different. With ADD /ADHD they want THEY TRY TO PUT THE RESPONSIBILITY TO THE CHILD ON PAYING MORE ATTENTION, in actuallity, if if is CAPD, the child has a sensory impairment, they don't have control of the information, they may appear distracted or inattention, but the cause is not emotional it is sensory. The child needs very specific inputs in their education. If you have an IEP put in writing a request for an IEE go for and independent review from an educational specialist, and have them rule out what is classified as a "specific learning disability". It is intimidating to sit with a team and not know what really is his best interest. I suggest you use an outside team to evaluate him. Send a trusted counselor into the classroom to observe him. Is he/she acting at the correct age and stage level? Are the other students out of control in the classroom? Is the student sitting in the back of the classroom? Does the teacher provide written instruction? Give extra time? What is the focus in the classroom? Most kids on IEP should focus on getting the basics right, and not do the volume of work they are given. Focus on quality not quantity!

@barchetta575m6 жыл бұрын
She is not totally correct in the fact that a school counselor plays a HUGE role in the IEP process and is a vital member of an IEP team. A psychologist is "optional" although some districts, such as the LAUSD district, require a psychologist to be present.

ok, so this counselor emailed me and said to meet up and review my "IEP" even though I don't have any disorders or disabilities. Also, I'm in high school, what should I reply with to them? this makes me so mad because I'm not those kids whos in need of support and I've already gone through so much shit in elementary with missing school and writing something on a piece of paper I shouldn't have, but it's over. I went to highschool for it to be gone, but now I get this email?
