Azithromycin is an antibiotic you’ll take over three days to treat chlamydia. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what it is and how it works.
Azithromycin is a type of antibiotic called macrolide antibiotics. These inhibit protein synthesis in the cells of the bacteria that cause chlamydia, stopping them from growing and killing them off. Once it’s been confirmed you have chlamydia (or if it's very likely you have it), you’ll start by taking a 1 g azithromycin tablet, followed by a 500 mg tablet once a day for the following two days. You’ll need to wait at least seven days after finishing your course of azithromycin before having sex again (including oral sex).
