Yujiro explained that to him, strength is a measurement of your ability to impose your will on others. When Baki flipped the table, Yujiro's reaction showed that he genuinely put effort into cooking it. Baki got Yujrio to cook a meal for him like Baki cooked for Yijiro at the start of the arc. While Yujiro may have physically beaten him, Baki managed to achieve his goal of getting a home cooked meal from his dad.
@FirstnameLastname-le9hq10 ай бұрын
From what I know, in japan, flipping the dinner table is a thing that only the head of the household (typically father) would do. To actually explain what happened in this scene: Baki is about the strongest creature, and has certain ideas about what strength is. On a surface level, strength means the ability to beat someone up. But Yjiro is the strongest not just because he can beat people up, but because he can force people to accept his vision of the world, his way of life, everything about himself... because he can beat everyone up. There is literally nothing anyone can do to stop him. Baki invented a kind of extreme version of shadow boxing (because everything in Baki is extreme) where you pretend so hard something becomes kind of real. At first Yjiro thought it was utterly hilarious and ridiculous, but in this scene Baki got him to participate in it (this video makes it appear like Yjiro was controlling the situation, but really Baki was). In doing this, Yjiro came over to Baki's vision of the world and accepted something he had previously dismissed, meaning Baki is stronger than Yjiro. If you've seen the Chinese movie Hero, the emperor talks about the "highest ideal" he gleans through the calligraphy of Broken Sword. The first level of mastering the sword is where everything becomes a weapon (the swordsman), second level is where the warrior doesn't need a sword to kill (the emperor), and the third level is where the sword no longer exists (the ideal). It aligns with the Buddhist notion of freeing yourself from attachment. Baki is "getting rid of the sword", letting go of his attachment to violence, by stopping the fight, and inviting his father to eat an imaginary meal. The empty bowl is a motif in Buddhism, and because Baki is extreme, the bowl is doubly empty by never really existing in the first place. Baki wins through strength of spirit. The series is still insane.

Doing this he proves himself stronger than Yujiro in Yujiros world view by as you said making him believe the same as baki, but also by doubly imposing his will. Allow me to explain the significance of the invisible food in excruciating detail… Yujiro Hanma, time and again, has been established as the world's strongest creature. A man who bows to no-one, fears no-one, and respects no-one. Even his own family is a write-off to him, as he pursues further strength. Baki, despite his initial motivation of revenge, is ultimately a tragic character, beset by loneliness. His entire life, his mother treated him less like a person, and more like a means to an end to reach Yujiro, who again, had no love or respect for Baki. So, by forcing Yujiro to make Baki invisible dinner, it's not just an act taking victory over Yujiro by making the world's strongest serve dinner, but it's a way of earning some respect from an estranged father figure. Baki has finally won some appraisal from the man who's shadow he's lived in for his entire life. It's a symbolic reconnection. As for Pickle… Yeah, I got nothin'.
@vanhala154710 ай бұрын
Pickle is just Itagaki experimenting with the idea of "modern skill vs old strenght", a theme he later explores more in depth with musashi. I think where it kinda falls apart is that pickle is treated as somewhat of a savage animal, so Itagaki cant write pickle actually getting injured in a fight, since he lacks the communication ability to fully consent to violence like the main cast can. Kinda the same deal as Itagaki pointing out with doppo how killing tigers to flex your strenght is not actually cool. It just leaves a bad taste in the mouth because of animal cruelty.
@Magni4cent_Pose10 ай бұрын
@@vanhala1547 Yeah, that makes sense. Jack's fight especially is the greatest example of that. Although, there are one or two scenes that do indicate that Pickle has a higher sense of self than the average animal, like when he refused to eat Katsumi, or when Hanayama brings Baki to meet Pickle. Baki laments that Pickle is like the Yasha ape, where both Baki and Yujiro invaded it's territory just for a fight; This idea is immediately shut down when Pickle dunks on him, and proceeds to do a little victory dance.

@FirstLast-cg2nk10 ай бұрын
Yes, Baki is absolutely ridiculous and insane, but that's the point. The entire show is basically about the absurdity of the desire to be the strongest. Despite all the effort that Baki goes through, everything he overcomes and endures, he ends up without a real resolution, and Yujiro is the same, because he doesn't get to fight someone strong enough to defeat him. Honestly, I feel like that's the secret message behind everything in Baki. No one in the series ever really seems to reach fulfillment through fighting, and instead a lot of people seem to just flat out ruin their lives in seeking greatness through martial arts. Several people are permanently disfigured and/or crippled trying to fight an unfrozen caveman simply because they think he's pretty strong, in fights with no meaning and no reward other than "I beat a guy who used to wrestle T-Rexes". Yujiro Hanma killed his wife and made his son hate him because he wanted Baki to be the ultimate fighter, and in the end he still wasn't enough to defeat Yujiro or give him a satisfying match. Yeah, Yujiro Hanma can punch an earthquake to death, but as impressive as that is, it's more or less a parlor trick. A guy threw a punch faster than the speed of sound and destroyed his arm in the process, and what did that net him asides from respect amongst the people there to see it? None of the things any of the martial artists in Baki accomplish will ever mean anything to anyone barring a small audience who actually cares about that kind of thing. It's all meaningless self-satisfaction. In the end, Baki doesn't get fulfillment through fighting his father, but by basically closing the book on their fight and getting to know the man for who and what he is, ultimately finding resolution by not pursuing it further. He literally finds happiness by reconnecting with his father. It is weird, but also fitting, since the secret message is basically "Look at all of these guys who are called the strongest in the world and tell me if any of them look truly happy and fulfilled?" "They do when they're fighting..." "Yeah, and the rest of the time?" "Not really."

...invisible food. Its what it was all about. I like the interpretation, but i dont agree. Baki is way too insane for this "strength for the sake of it is bad" bs. The characters are shown in enjoying the process of fighting in scenes and what-not. The prize is not the end but the challenge to get there. "One must imagine Sisyphus happy", shit like that. Plus, its really fucking cool for a guy to fight with 200 kgs stuck to him or hitting people with enough force to collapse a mountain, and yet the opponent to just eat it and go on. There may be a deeper meaning, but what is shown and what is intended by the author are two distinct things. Baki is baki, turn your brain off, enjoy it. Ok, let me break down the final fight for you. In Baki, being stronger than someone mean you can impose your will on him. There is a message during most of Baki and especially Son of the Ogre, that says Yujiro is unable to dream and imagine things. He is too strong and everything is within his reach. When he tries to do something similar to Baki's imagination, the only thing he can project is just his image, the image of the Ogre. Baki helps his father fight boredom by giving him the best fight of his life, but he also is able to caught him under his imagination game, for a moment Yuujiro believes the fantasy is real, and think that the soup and the table are reals (he try to catch them when Baki flip the table). He accepts Baki was able to impose his will over him. For Yuujiro, that means he was defeated and also meant he was able to dream/imagine something, at least for a moment. Baki was able to make his father dream/imagine again and proved to be stronger by making his father fall for his trick. In the following arc (Musahi), Yujiro flat out ignore Musashi imagination's blades attack, saying "all of this is bullshit, it's not real so i don't care". Unlike Baki, Musahsi can't impose his will on Yujiro.

Then the next scenes between each other, yujiro invite baki to a super luxurious restaurant to impress him, but it doesn't work, because baki just want a casual normal dad/son thing, and yujiro put no effort in it, he doesn't even cook or make the table. When he scold Baki about not having table manners, Baki answer by "i didn't had anyone to teach me this'". At the end of the fight, Yujiro sit down, and agree to prepare an invisible soup for Baki. Baki imposed his final will, a normal, family dinner, onto Yujiro. For the first time in his life, Yujiro did something because someone asked him to.

@@scarocci7333He also corrected how Baki was holding his chopsticks, he straight up gave him everything he ever wanted in the span of like ten minutes.

When I first saw this anime, I noticed how the lips were drawn on these dangerous men. I thought I would have the irrational fear of being kissed by these men if I lived in that universe, but further in I realized that fear would've been more than rational. 😱

Ah yes, how could you resist the succulent lips of Yuujirou Compared-To-Me-Everyone-Is-Female Hanma? This is not a rhetorical question btw. How do you resist? He's here and not taking no for an answer nor shotgun for an argument! I need he

Honestly I don't know. I would require reality bending powers because I don't think even the sweet release of death is going to free you. Be it his death or yours. The only way out is to outmatch him in power and hyperbolic time chamber in another franchise has enough time to get that far so quick.@@MrSamulai

The best parr is that this is quite literally a summarization of what happens, with little to no exaggerating

The thing about Baki is that, at least imo, it’s a lot less of a dedicated action series and more of a loving parody/sendup of other action anime. Thinking about it this way just makes it make a lot more sense imo.

Remember when Baki fought his hallucination of Mike Tyson in front of some kids. Like he was like bleeding and shit.

This is like Eva for me, I don’t entirely know what it’s going for, but then being aware about its context keeps me fascinated.
