Delightful game choice, as always. I can often find the 'killer move' when I'm told to look for it; but looking at a position and realizing there is a winning move there without being prompted to find it, now that's the real thing.

+englishmanspeaks Yes, but that's not what makes his videos so enjoyable. Any fool can use an engine. Mato picks particularly instructive games to discuss (you can't discuss brilliant moves if there aren't any), and then has a knack of reducing the game to one or two crucial moments. If he went through EVERY possible variation, the videos would be thorough but unwatchable.

Mato, great video as always. I just wanted to note that there seems to be some background noise in the sound -- maybe a fan or air conditioner is on the background? Same here. I love chess, the killer move usually implies rupture, a bold move... But to find it in your own chess match,, that is quite difficult. I'm an amateur chess player, i wish i had more time to devote to chess, for me the best game ever invented.

Just one stupid question… If at 4:55 Queen took rook on A8 instead what would be the right continuation? I'd suggest Qxb4 check and if Ke2, Bd2-b4 checkmate, and if instead of Ke2, Kd1, then Ba4 check, Kc1, Qxc5 check, Kb2, Qc2 Check, Ka3, Qb3 checkmate? I know it might be totally rubish and I might be totally blind but it's worth a try I thought haha

I'm pretty sure it's because the white queen must guard the critical b4 square. Otherwise its mate in 3 by the queen, knight, and the light-squared bishop. Specifically, after Qxa8 comes ...Qxb4+. If white plays Ke2 then ...Bb5+, Kd1 Qb1#. If white plays Kd1 then ...Qb1+, Ke2 Bb5#.

@rae8323

+siquator White would be slaughtered. Qb4 and everything is open for black. When king moves to d1 (everything else leads to guaranteed checkmate as far as I can see), knight to e2 and eventually bishop to e3. All blacks major pieces would be attacking king in the open, with white queen which could as well be off the board. And all this when considering that white already would win rook with no repercussions if it would just take the damn queen.

poor continuation the one explained.. the worst move playable for both sides.. the best move would be Bishop takes pawn in E5, if pawn takes bishop queen takes pawn checking king and winning a rook.. So black cant play queen there, must defend in some way, and also if your move with queen with white pieces was right, black should have stopped the check with queen c6 changing the queens
