Excellent review and comparison of the BFG line up!! I run the BFG KO3s on my work truck. 2021 GMC 2500HD 4x4 crew cab gasser. She carries a 400L slip tank, back rack with heavy lights and loaded toolbox on top of the slip tank. That poor truck gets sent down the haul roads in the active coal mines of British Columbia and the oilsands of Alberta. Just came home from the coal mines, roads were iced over with blowing snow(Hwy 22 for those who know the area), the KO3s did great even with the slip being empty. They have also stood up well to the muddy, rock filled haul roads of the mines. I will definitely be putting set of KO3s on both our 2023 GMC Sierra half ton and our 1999 OBS Tahoe Z71. Couple things to note about being on active mine haul roads and mines in general. General active haul road rule, you are not allowed to stop a light vehicle(Pick up truck) on an active haul road. That being said they are some exceptions but that is a whole other thing. An active haul road is defined as a "road" used by the large haul trucks(CAT 777, 779, etc..) and large equipment(Wheel loaders and dozers). While the HD tire is a great option, mines are CHEAP, they look at the bottom dollar when it comes to anything, so if those tires aren't seen much in the mines its probably due to price because each mine has hundreds of light vehicles(small buses, pick ups, full size SUVs, deck trucks etc..). That all being said, I'm a Canadian and everything is stupid pricy here.

I’ve driven on BFG’s with several of my trucks from the Mud Terrain to the KO series. What I found was they were great till winter and then the KO2 was a challenge on hard pack and slush. I run the KO 2’s till late November then I switch to Nokia winter Studded Hakkapeliitta tires. They are excellent in the winter and less of a challenge to drive compared to the KO2’s. When my KO2’s wear down I’ll probably switch to the Trail Terrains as my F150 spends most of its life on pavement. I have a CFMOTO Uforce 600 side by side to do the dirty off road work and keep my F150 nice and clean. Awesome review I enjoy your channel.

I had KO2's on my 4x4's for years with the same problem, icy roads are what we drive 4 months a year in Norway. @@ieism1I’ve watched the reviews on the Trail Terrain and I’m with you on that. I’ll probably stick with the Nokias for our winters but switch to the Trailer Terrain from March- November. We just got over 150cm of snow in a week and it hasn’t stopped yet. I feel more confident in my studded Nokias.

The small ridges between the large outside lugs are also stone ejectors that help keep rocks from drilling into the tire. The large channels between the lugs are also tapered slightly being larger at the surface compared to the base of the lug. This is also a feature to allow rocks to be thrown out easier. If the channels were straight they would hold rocks more. Your videos are always so good and I am sure you have probably already covered both points I mentioned. I noticed triangular stone ejectors in the HD terrain tires. Before the trail terrain BFG made a tire called the Rugged terrain that looks very similar.. I put a set on my snow plow truck almost 15 years ago and they are still working great.

Should be common sense, but may not be thought about. Your providing example of wicking and effect of the tread pattern can help with it. "Wicking action: The movement of a liquid through a narrow space without the help of external forces, like gravity." Appreciate the good faith of BFG sending you the tires and notes on their case use function as we mostly want facts. A good business never needs to advertise their product as it has a reputation, and I leave it at that. Keep in mind that those who work at BFG also have family and provided a better product serves to keep them safe as a well. Once again, function over "prettiness/looks". Thank You, and great coverage on this important topic.

I can vouch, that We ran KO2s on all our oils field trucks here in the eastern ky, western WV mountains, everything from tundras to f-250 gas a diesel 7.3s, dodge cummins 5.9 3500, even with our Chevy 3500 service trucks, even with up to a foot of snow with ice, we’d go anywhere we wanted to go or needed to go. Up hill down hill, Usually, From 500 ft to 3500 ft plus in elevation changes. They’d put you in places it was dang scary to come back out of with all the snow on. Snow/ ice didn’t hurt us, of course we had snow chains in the truck for just incase, boss said every winter, those chains were to make sure you made it to work, not to make sure you made it home, lol. We were so impressed with them compared to the cooper discovery at that we had run before we changed all our trucks over to it when it came time for tires on each one. They did have a little Road Noise once about half worn, and we were def rough on them, snow, ice, Rocky, Mountain gas and oil roads river bottoms, gas line roads . We’d get about 50,000-60,000 miles on them. Just to put that in perspective, that was roughly a year of service out of them. I was the closest one to any of our locations and I was 35-45 mins away in good weather from anything we had, as hard as I could drive. We checked everything major, 7 days a week. Ran roughly 150 loop min every single day. Then go to the rig and spend a 10-12 hour shift on it. Would take 5 hours just to run the loop daily. Some of our locations was 1 hour best you could do, hard as you could stand to drive off road just to get too. 1 in particular was 108 miles. Up and around just to get 700 yards as the crow flies.

Something about the tyre compound: earlier this year i was lucky enough to be sent on a driving safety training with my collegues at work. Our instructor there is a part time instructor and part time rallye driver. He recently had been at Continental (the tyre company) and they got a factory tour and to ask stuff: The Conti guy told him that when they come up with a new compound that works better, it takes up to 7 years for the recipe to really get handed down to the "not so premium" brands in the same tyre conglmomerate. So when Conti comes up with a new recipe, until you get the same compound performance in Uniroyal, Semperit, General Tyre... it can take up to 7 years. (that's for tyres in the same segment i guess, if they don't have to fear to canibalize on sales, but beat a competitor, they will share more. -> my opinion)

Very interesting. You know, it's easy to have a ho hum attitude toward BFG because they have become so ubiquitous. The thought process behind these tires is really an eye opener, and a huge aid in choosing the right tire. Learning what I did here has definitely moved them up in my pecking order. The one issue I have with BFG and many other brands is tire weight. This is something that many manufacturers just do not take seriously, and most buyers are ignorant of the implications. It sounds like BFG has the resources, both financially and intellectually to lead the way here too. I would love to see this happen.

I’m a tire geek, like you, I’ve been a BFG fan since learning to drive my Dads Jeep Cherokee with the early 2000’s BFG AT’s, 30x9.50 with 1” super-stock suspension. They did excellent in sand dunes we have and I remember rolling through feet of snow with great traction so much I was shocked at times. I built my first Jeep 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo with Selec Trac and the 4.0. 2” 4wd Hardware coil lift and limited slip rear end with 31x10.50 BFG AT KO’s, JKS adjustable trac bars, and Bilstein 5100 shocks. That thing was insane how capable it was. Hill climbing, sand dunes, and deep Minnesota snow. All around excellent. I can’t wait to put Ko3’s on my 04 WJ, when I install my 2” lift and Bilstein 5100’s. I LOVE geeking out to tires and YOU, my man, have done an outstanding job at making tire breakdown videos that are informative and enjoyable to watch. 👌🏻🫡✌🏻

Nathan, thanks for another deep dive into tire tech! I have always appreciated BFG's innovation in the off-road tire industry. However, I don't run their A/T or M/T tires anymore for two reasons: shallow tread depth compared to their competitors, and undersized diameters versus their claimed size. I was really hoping that these issues would be fixed with the KO3 and KM3, but it looks like I'll have to wait for the next generation of BFGs to see if they address those shortcomings.

Another great video. On the Trail Terrain - I see hydroplaning because of the solid side lug. The water is "trapped" in the center of the tire with no exit strategy. Another part of my brain says that millions of semis are running down the roads with (only) continuous lugs, so maybe having water exiting the sides isn't the important part of the equation... Clearly, there's a gap in my tire traction/ grip, science/theory understanding or knowledge base.

Great reviews. I enjoy this channel. I do not care about looks. I've never had off-road tires although I can see how critical they can be. I've had good luck airing down my Michelin Defenders on my Ram 3500. I've only destroyed one. In off-roading here in Arizona some of the roads have super sharp rocks. So I don't need an aggressive tire but I could use an ice/snow tread with super-strong sidewalls for protection when aired down but keeping me on an icy freeway when visiting family in Idaho and can still tow heavy. I'm leaning towards the Falken Wildpeak AT4s.

Mind boggling they don't have them. If the customer doesn't want them they just turn them in. If they do the customer advertises for them. So elementary ! BFG has always had the best sidewall styling and they just score an own goal on this. I've in the past run black curb side and OWL on the drivers side and got both looks at once.

Great video! I’m a film sound editor/designer by trade, so I notice stuff most people won’t. Your videos lately have been sounding a lot better. Cleaner dialogue, SFX, and even music. My one constructive suggestion is to dial the music back a bit. The first part with wall to wall music was kind of distracting and didn’t add anything to your VO. The second part of the video where the music faded out was better. Like all sounds, think of the music as a way to enhance the story. There are plenty of examples of wall to wall music done well; John Williams’ score for Star Wars is a good example. Schindler’s List or Saving Private Ryan are good examples of music used more sparingly to evoke emotions at specific times and to get out of the way when other sounds are more important.

Love your videos on tires they help so much in understanding how they will perform. I would love to see you overview the yokohama geolander a/t4 g018, as well as the maxxis razr at811! I am between those and the new terra grappler g3 for my truck.

Loved the video but the information on the HD-Terrain left me with some of the questions I have had on it not answered still and now even more curious to the answers. The HD-Terrain was said to be a tire for the oil companies and companies of Alaska. With that, there are lots of miles of snow packed and icy roads as well as the mud that was mentioned. How are these tires built for those situations? Would it be a good tire for a 3/4 diesel that also has that type of terrain to travel on for 6-7 months of the year like we do in Idaho. Over on the colder side of the state with less population than the Boise valley. Can you speak to me/us about what they said as far as the snow/ice traction. I know you said and have shown that you have them on your Ford F250, what is your experience so far. I really want to run them, but with having a larger lug and harder compound, I am picturing it having the traction of a hockey puck on packed snow and ice. I also heard a rumor that they were in the works of developing a HD-A/T. Can you speak to that. Thank you for your great videos and love all of the Toyota content you have. Cheers

Had these on my diesel 2500hd for about 3000 miles, replacing Destination XT’s. The Coopers rode unusually smooth, but were noisier and cost me about 1mpg.

Can you do a more review on what’s better for a heavy duty truck I can’t decide if I want the KO3 or the HD ones ?

I wonder how the Cooper Discoverer Stt PRO compares to the BFH mud terrains.

Is the trail terrain 3 ply sidewall? Think I'm between the KO3 and new Nitto G3 but leaning towards the BFG because of the tougher sidewall. Going back to Colorado next year and will be in the mountains..

NO. 2. Per TireRack website: "Internal Construction of the Trail-Terrain T/A consists of a robust, two-ply polyester casing engineered to provide comfort and reliability while maintaining a higher level of durability for occasional off-road use. Twin steel belts are wrapped with a single, nylon reinforcement ply to form a strong foundation with high-speed capabilities."

My jeep came with 2-ply side wall KO2 and I'm not sure whether they're still considered good off road tires.

Awesome…. Thanks for another amazing video to fulfill my Ko3 research itch lol. What are your thoughts on the OE Ko3 vs the retail? Basically I’m deciding between waiting on the retail 285/70/17 C rated or just going for the OE C rated or retail E rated. Weight difference doesn’t seem dramatic between the ratings so main concern is On road wet performance, performance when aired down (tires ability to flex and grip obstacles) and alongside that being comfortable enough. This is on a 5700lb 2011 f150.
