Emelia from Mupfure area of Zimbabwe, shares her story of bilharzia and how accessing treatment and medication changed her life. In her own words she explains how the availability of clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) isn't merely fundamental for survival; it's indispensable in combating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
WASH are not just essentials for survival; they're crucial in the fight against NTDs, affecting over 1.65 billion people globally. In regions where water is scarce, hygiene often takes a backseat, exacerbating the spread of these debilitating illnesses. But through WASH initiatives, we can change the narrative.
From building tippy taps to promoting handwashing, WASH practices are pivotal in preventing NTDs like trachoma, intestinal worms, and schistosomiasis.
The synergy between WASH and NTD sectors is gaining traction, thanks to initiatives like data sharing and collaborative programs. By leveraging data insights and fostering cross-sector partnerships, together we're not just combating neglected tropical diseases; we're transforming communities.
Let's unite to support multi-sector initiatives and invest in WASH infrastructure, ensuring a healthier future for all. 💙
Bilharzia (also known as schistosomiasis or snail fever) affects people in 50 endemic countries across Asia, Africa and parts of South America.
Bilharzia is an illness that develops when people come into contact with water contaminated by certain snails that carry disease-causing parasites. These parasites can penetrate through a person’s skin and move through the body.
In women, bilharzia can lead to female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) which can cause complications in pregnancy, infertility, and triple the risk of contracting HIV.
