Thing is you can have that in normal EDH. People choose to not have it. I once lost a game (first game of EDH mind you) because I like a big fat Timmy over ran a single player for like 50 damage with a mass amount of tokens I made with avenger of Zendikar. He just laughed his ass off and said to date ot probably was the biggest over kill he died to (he was at like 20 life) next round we just moved on and even ended up teaming up against someone who was going of. People choose to be salty in EDH, you don't need to be at any power level.

I would strongly recommend having both a CEDH and a casual commander deck so that you can play longer commander games throughout a play session with friends and then if you have like 30 minutes left at the end, you and your friends can quickly shuffle up and play a few quick CEDH games. Also works great at an LGS where you can effectively play with any group you want since you will have a deck for any type of play group.

My LGS has, over time, gotten enough cEDH players to start a pod or two on Commander nights. Some players flip flop between pods depending on what power level they feel like. The store even sweetens the pods with a little extra prize support. That's encouraged other players to begin building varied power-level decks, and a few former non-cEDH players have began their own competitive decks. It's great, in my opinion, that cEDH exists because it helps prevent stagnation, along with the other pros talked about in the vid. I'll probably never play, because it's not in my nature to be so competitive, but cEDH needs to exist for those people - especially so I'm not playing against a top tier deck in a casual pod because the player loves the strategy but doesn't have the proper outlet for that much power.

I put desolation in a Muldrotha deck and the Jund player who forced everyone to agree to let each other have free mulligans who only put 17 lands in his deck threw a violent tantrum which involved trying to and failing to successfully flip the table. Good times.

I've found, my biggest saltiest moment in anything EDH, is when I have dud cards in my hand that are just stuck there. cEDH has been the answer to this, either through fast mana or not making the super big cards viable. My group is slowly heading towards cEDH as a whole, as we optomize, and it's refreshing to be able to play the cards we want.

Speaking from experience, the 2 pods of cEDH at my own LGS are more than happy to let people new to the competitive format play and even help them learn and get into it. I played pretty casually myself until they invited me to play with them. It was a really good learning experience because I think it helped me be just a better commander player over all.

You know, I played my first game of CEDH the other day. No, my deck was not $1000 dollars or anything, nor do I consider my deck to have been at CEDH level, but I picked my deck that I believe had the fastest win condition, that still has a decent amount of interaction and removal, Nethroi. There were two actual CEDH decks and one other high-level EDH deck at the table. But, I have to say, it was really fun! If anything, it was that, at the core, nobody was getting butthurt about anything. On the first few swings, everybody was attacking the K'rik deck, because life is more of a resource than anything in CEDH. The K'rik player even advised us two "new" CEDH players that that's what you should be doing, and he totally got it. I even threatened the win at one point, but it got countered, but hey, I was happy that I was one step from winning at a CEDH table. And the games also don't take forever! We played through 3 or 4 games while the table next to us only did 1. It was great fun.

Also, on that note about CEDH decks being built to play against other CEDH decks, there are a few good examples of this. Cards like Mystic Remore and Carpet of Flowers rarely see play in casual commander, because the decks you will be playing against just won't consistently get you value from these cards. Whereas practically every CEDH deck will play these, because in those playgroups you will for sure see a lot of islands/shock lands and noncreature spells in the early turns. Other cards like Gitaxian probe are also super handy because knowing whether your opponent has a counter spell is super handy.

I am looking foreward to this series! My playgroup is starting to slowly creep up on the powerscale of decks and we are currently in a spot that starts scratching the cedh format. Our commanders and decks are not fully optimized as we choose to play cards we own but outside of that the win options, interactions and general gameplay start to become more and more of a cedh group limited by budget. However we all have pet cards and while our top decks slowly transform into cedh decks we all love our casual commanders that we play in low powered rounds of edh.

This was really helpful. I’m super new to the idea of cedh and have dabbled in a niv mizzet curiosity and Gitrog dredge deck. The latter which is by far more powerful. However cards like bayou and bazaar of Baghdad are far out of my reach it’s nice to hear most welcome proxies. I will eventually splash out on these cards. If you want to get into cEDH, I would highly advise just printing proxies. Yeah it's like a few dollars in ink, but it'll give you a nice feel for the format. Most people are pretty chill with proxies in cEDH groups (there are a few exceptions to that of course)

The problem with MLD in casual is that many players use them the worst way possible: they blow up all lands without an advantageous board or a follow-up plan to secure victory in the next few turns (or their plan is so fragile that a single well-timed removal spell can ruin it), devolving the game into a very boring draw-go cycle until someone topdecks enough lands to play again.

God how I wish all of that were true. my first few experiences with cEDH online were I wasn't allowed to play flash in certain leagues while it was still legal, and then, my Kess deck had "too many proxies" which was 20 BTW (mainly fast mana rocks and duals and other super expensive staples), and now that I spent 1300 dollars on a Najeela deck that I thoroughly enjoy I have little issues, but sometimes I get people who won't allow me to play, or they'll "forget" to include me in some tournaments. I have had a very frustrating time getting my footing in cEDH, but when I play I have so much fun. I just really wish some of these sub communities were as welcoming as people make them out to be. But I still love playing at the higher level and now I avoid those toxic sub communities.

Much as I enjoy the EDH format, it honestly feels like, more often than not, people's pride and ego get in the way of the fun of the game. In my experience, many people in the casual EDH crowd seem to be more concerned with "look how cool the thing my deck does is" than actually playing the game. Between this, the arbitrary stipulations casual EDH's power levels, and games taking upwards of two hours because of the constant negotiating, complaining, back and forth spite plays, and multitudes of board wipes, I've come to find cEDH to be a much more enjoyable, fast paced, and all around healthier interpretation of the format. Also, admittedly, infinites and loops just make my smooth brain go c:

Honestly the last con shouldn't really be a big issue. If you have a new player sitting at your table the first thing I'd do is pull out my win cons and give them a run through of my decks play pattern. Normally my friends do the same. Sure they probably wont play optimally game 1 or game 2, but games are short and its absolutely possible to minimize that learning curve, by letting them know about the decks at the table (which everyone else will likely already have an understanding of). This might be specific to my pod, but we also like to talk about major decision points and the muligan choices we made at the start of the game, once we finish a game.

There is one thing I found that quite funny. We all know that the goal of cedh is to win. But sometimes, you lose your win condition, and the best shot you can make is to force a draw(like in thrasios/vial smasher, you lose jace&oracle&double scepter, you have to rely on a big rolling earthquake), is it still consistent with the play-to-win mindset?
