I thought it was slang only over here, England, whereby it is any industry that passes around the "baton" to eachother. So I am in property and we have regular sellers. These regular sellers will buy to regular buyers, who will then sell the same property again some months later for profit and in good times, it could be back to the regular seller! It drives the property prices/value up but doesn't actually help people or the market in general. So you call it Circlejerklism.

And in anything freelance, like journalism, it's about keeping you neccessary so you keep getting gigs (to write for) and thus keeping you in the job market for that industry.

Took Journalism in college so I can answer this question. One of my assignments was to find a blog, read it and write an article about the blog. Nothing nefarious just basic research and writing practice right? No, I left out we were to find a pop culture issue and then cite the blog as a source. This assignment was specifically for magazine and news article practice. They literally teach you that this is not only acceptable, but an industry standard. I got a c- in the class because I wouldn't do 40% of the assignments. Lucky me I'm a good test taker.

Its practically self explanatory CircleJerklism Okay I had a slightly different explanation. More akin to when a situation is in a problematic state, or in a state of disfunction, or malfunction and all anyone can think to do is in effect, if not in essence "do something, something must be done, we must do something. Except for whatever will actually work or solve the problem, or fix even just a piece of what's broken" primarily this is due to the kneejerk emotional Bleating and Trampling nature of the Herd Mammal that's found its way into position where it's role in the herd is to do something, whatever the something is, and out of panic and Cognitive Heuristics they default to their intuitive sensibilities which 9 times out of ten, if not more, into 99% of the time being wrong in a range from simple and forgivable ways to downright unforgivably egregious ways for which having run away from any actual fix, including alerting and getting assistance from the nearest relevant Mammal of Competence, degrees of punishment and atomement are by the circumstances themselves and the incurring of what otherwise was completely Unavoidable Unnecessary Suffering made imperative. I'm thinking of shit like the mess we are in now, in current year, as well as in particular the events of the Chernobyl Disaster.
