Can you use watercolor paint with it?

It is really smooth so it will work similar to hot-press paper, but yes!

Wonderfully! Claybord’s ultra-smooth surface is perfect for detail and ink. The soft Fineliner tip is a great choice to use with Claybord.

H E L P ... Anyone - I do graphite portraits. If I draw on claybord, do I need to prepare the surface in any way? What do I do when finished? Do you recommend any kind of varnish or fixative? I want to try this asap please. .... OR is there a better Ampersand Bord for graphite?

Claybord would be our recommendation. No prep needed. Seal with matte spray varnish to protect the finished drawing. Email sent. 👍

For pencil, charcoal, and color pencils… which boards work best (clayboard or pastelboard)? So I wanted to for know for “each” of these mediums, if they work “well” with one of these two or both? Thanks

Charcoal and colored pencils work well on Encausticbord and Pastelbord. Graphite pencil on Claybord for fine detail or Encausticbord and Pastelbord for more expressive marks.

How do you varnish a mixed media painting on this clayboard?

The materials and process for applying varnish to a mixed media painting on Claybord would be the same as on any other substrate. Make sure that the media that you use for the painting is compatible with the varnish type and follow the manufacture’s recommendations for application.

Yes. It will work more like a hot-press paper because it is so smooth. Our Aquabord has a surface with more texture and absorbency, closer to a cold-press paper.

The substrate is our premium Hardbord, a high-density panel made from wood fibers that contains no adhesives or residential oils. It is extremely warp and moisture resistant. This is the base substrate for all of Ampersand’s Museum Series Panels.

Here is a ranking of engineered wood from lower to higher density: plywood, MDF, HDF, hardboard, Ampersand Hardbord. It’s a unique product with special qualities that you won’t find at lumberyards.

To an extent, yes. Keep in mind that the surface is very smooth and so a more textured surface may work better. Our Encausticbord and Pastelbord are frequently used with colored pencils, for example.

What’s a good way to hang thin panels like this since there isn’t a ledge like a canvas?

Flat/uncradled panels are meant to be framed. The cradle on the back of a panel creates the "ledge" that can serve the same purpose for display as a canvas stretcher bar.
