A beautiful culture of people. I’m not Mexican but I believe that instead of just being sad that someone has died that their life needs to be celebrated, be thankful that they lived. Also, it is still okay to be sad when you lost someone, I’m just saying that you should also be happy that they lived.

My friend who lives in Mexico introduced me to the beautiful tradition, and it made me think differently, after loosing my grandparents I’ve realised it’s better to celebrate their lives and remember then and praise them, I’m sure they wouldn’t want us to constantly be sad. Mexico as a whole is beautiful and I have so much respect for the people

My aunt told me a crazy story that happened to her, when she was a child in dia de Los muertos in Mexico. My grandma and my uncles and aunts went to the cemetery to put more candles and food. My aunt wandered off she was about 7. She saw some delicious food someone had left for their lost one. When she was about to grab it inches away, someone slapped her hand. No one was there. Other ppl were far away. She got chills and ran to my grandma. Not a scary story but something bout Dia de Los Muertos.

@@anelayala8187 You eat the food you put out as an offering? My family has a supper together with plates filled and set out for the deceased and once the supper is over we take the plates outside. USA, really lacks spiritually!! My dad's family always visited their loved ones resting place on nov 2, We would have a picnic at the cemetery. We would sing their favorite songs, tell stories about them, eat their favorite food. The thought of having their spirit near me, gives me comfort. Their story and songs give me joyful memories. If u don't understand it, or like it, just stay away, but for those that like it, join us, but don't make a mockery of it, if you don't do ur duty to ur Departed familia and friends, don't party, it's not a big Holoween party, it has deep meaning!

Brought by the Spanish? What are you on about? Mesoamerican cultures believe the dead live in the underworld called Mictlan, which is not a permanent place, therefore, the living welcome them once a year. Dead is seen as part of a cycle, not an end, and it is not tragic by any means. The goddess of Death is also the goddess of fertility, because from death comes life. This celebration goes back thousands of years, and was only made to coincide with the All Saints Day by the Spaniards, it was celebrated in August before the Conquest.

Like with the Celtic Samhain. It was put on October 31st and they changed it to All Hallows Eve then later to Halloween. Samhain originally was in November and celebrated the Ancestors marked The Horned God's passing until is rebirth at The Winter Solstice. The Goddess as Crone took him to The Underworld to await His rebirth at The Winter Solstice and because of this the Veil Between The Worlds Vanished. Allowing The Spirits to return to celebrate for a short time.

Because of the Galleon Trade that exports and imports trade from Acapulco and Manila for about 200 years, I think The Day Of The Dead of Mexico was brought to the Philippines because we also have this(although not really with festivals but it's a national holiday and you'd see a lot of people in cemeteries that day)

This has been part of the native culture in America specific to Central and North America, celebrated before Europeans arrived in this continent. The Catholic tried to end this cultural heritage by changing the name of the holiday. The Day of the Dead is one of the few cultural treasures that the Spaniards could not take away from the people

It was an example of the things that the Philippines received from Mexico, because there are many like La Virgen De Guadalupe that you worship in the Philippines, also got from Mexico (in Spanish) camote, tomate, chayote and la hamaca, and also México received the Tamarindo from Asia, It’s very sad that you don’t know your own history because for 250 years even though you were owned by the Spanish crown you were ruled by Mexico (New Spain) specifically from what it’s now Mexico City under the name of Capitanía General de Filipinas, until the independence of Mexico from Spain in 1810 and mainly because of the distance, Mexico “abandoned” the Philippines but stayed a part of the Spanish crown after that ruled from Madrid, until the independence of the Philippines, so it’s normal to see why the Philippines would have something resembling to the Aztec Día de Muertos (Day of the dead)

No, sorry Natgeo, but NO, Spanish didnt bring Day of Deads or Dia de Muertos to America, Aztecs use to have alot of celebrations to deads (At least 6 of them) but christians forbid them all, except for Dia de Muertos, who got the luck of be in the same day of Dia de todos los Santos or Dia de los Santos Difuntos (Day of all Saints or Day of Holy Deads) Spanish let Dia de Muertos for the day, thinking who natives was celebrating Dia de Todos los Santos, when they was celebrating Dia de Muertos.

False, the Spanish came and mixed their culture with the Aztec and others, and they did not "prohibit" the rest only with evangelization, they were forgotten or mixed (it is not known) and ended up as one, Learn more history

Mexicas, the dominant indigenous people of the Mexican pre-Hispanic era, traveled after dying through the nine regions of the underworld, the Mictlan, a legend that represents the basis of the modern day of the Day of the Dead celebration, held on November 1 and 2 . So this tradition is mexican the spaniards only added the catholic elements from their religion

Totally disagree with the comment of which National Geographic states within the video. "The Spanish brought this amazing celebration" whoever put up this video, I'd like to know why you put such information, as I know that information is wrong. The Spanish never allowed such behavior (celebration). To the Spanish, these acts were satanic, Punished by death. Get these facts straight, it does my culture (As a Mexican) wrong. Thanks

If u connect to something go for it just don’t disrespect it. it’s beautiful to see people embrace other cultures. Just remember that u shouldn’t try to cherry pick what u like abt a culture, especially when it comes to the actual people. U cant like the food or the holiday but then hate on the people. Also look into the history as well.
