What is DDNS?

What is DDNS? Dynamic DNS or DDNS stands for dynamic domain name system. It is sometimes referred to as dynamic domain name service. It is a system to automatically update name servers with the current IP address that a domain name should point to.
In order to understand DDNS, it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of DNS. When you type a domain name into a web browser, that name gets translated into an IP address. The IP address is the location where the website is hosted. Domain names and DNS are used as a convenience for humans, so that we do not have to memorize IP addresses.
To view security cameras remotely over the Internet, you must configure your mobile app or desktop software with the IP address of the Internet connection at the location of the IP camera or recorder. Then, port forwarding rules are configured on a router, to forward inbound requests to the specific device on your local network (usually an IP camera, DVR, or NVR). The problem is that if your Internet connection uses a dynamic IP address and the IP address changes after you have configured your app. That will cause you to loose the connection. DDNS is used to solve the problem of ISPs changing IP addresses.Viewtron security camera DVRs and NVRs have DDNS service built-in so that you can use a domain name instead of an IP address to access your cameras remotely. If your ISP changes your IP address, your connection is still valid if you are using a domain name that is managed by the built-in DDNS service.

DVRs and NVRs that use device ID for connectivity generally rely on a third party hosting server. DDNS does not. It is a direct connection between the client software and the DVR / NVR.
