Majority of our earth's population has no knowledge about the Russia and China's cultural values, tradition, lifestyle. We've always seen these two countries through America's eyes. The US has always propagated the world. Grow some brains ya'll!!

00:00:37 - DeepSeek claims they only needed about 2,000 older Nvidia chips to build their model, which cost just about $5.6 million. That's like saying you built a Ferrari using Toyota parts. 00:01:19 - DeepSeek taught their AI to think using pure reinforcement learning, learning through trial and error, which is causing a big uproar in the media. 00:02:20 - There have been reports that DeepSeek's AI gives inaccurate answers almost 83% of the time when asked about news and refuses to answer almost 85% of questions about China, possibly due to government censorship. 00:03:46 - OpenAI is claiming that DeepSeek might have used OpenAI's own models to train their AI, which is kind of like copying someone's homework but making it look different. 00:03:58 - The race to build better AI isn't just about raw power anymore; it's about efficiency. 00:04:28 - The real competition might not be between companies anymore; it's between countries and their approach to AI development.

So when DeepSeek supposedly used OpenAIs model for training they suddenly remember that copyright exists. But scraping the web to train theirs is fine of course.

Two thoughts: 1. Super impressed that you didn't jump in and try to pontificate on something you don't yet fully understand. The internet could use a lot more of that. So thank you! 2. I'm not a developer, so I apologize for the n00b question: if DeepSeek is open source, how do we not know what's happening with our data when we use it?
@sebitasalinas3 күн бұрын
Answering your second thought. It's because they are 2 different things. The model and the code are open source, which allows you to run it locally or on servers that you control or trust. But you can also use model from their page, and there is where we don't know what this data will be used for (which is not very different from using ChatGPT since they also store our data)
@michael.a.covington3 күн бұрын
Answer to 2: Neural networks are black boxes. The information is hidden in matrices of numbers that have no direct interpretability.
@DavidRathbun3 күн бұрын
@@michael.a.covington Even open source...? Isn't the idea that you can inspect the code and know what it's doing with our data?
@michael.a.covington3 күн бұрын
@@DavidRathbun You can tell that it's doing huge matrix computations. You cannot know what effect each number in the matrix has, except by doing a huge computation. Read up on neural networks. They are not like computer programming as we know it. They are very good at some kinds of pattern recognition (including paraphrasing English text fluently and grammatically), and that makes some people think they're conscious, which they're not.
@michael.a.covington3 күн бұрын
BTW, I would expect the open-source algorithms for doing the matrix computations to be completely unsurprising, except maybe that they might incorporate insights into how to do it efficiently. Overall, it should be the same as the way everybody else does it.

This is a big move toward reinforcement learning and away from pure LLMs that are merely condensed tables of where words occur in context. A year ago, people were claiming that human consciousness would emerge from huge tables of words in context. Not any more! The focus is on getting useful tasks done and training AIs to do them.

They used existing hardware in the order of 10 to 50 thousands gpu's already acquired for the hedgefund + the engineers worked on it for months (algo's, optimalisations) so the 6 million for pre-training does not reflect the entire pricetag, still impressive but in line with the current (high) speed of incremental model developments (4o was released more then 6 months ago, a lifetime)

@nesseihtgnay94193 күн бұрын
How did DeepSeek pull this off? I see three possible explanations. First, they might have reverse-engineered an API from an open-source LLM like Llama, using its training logic without building everything from scratch. Second, they could have accessed Nvidia’s powerful H100 GPUs, possibly through funding from the CCP, bypassing restrictions and acquiring them at little to no cost. The third-and most disruptive-possibility is that they discovered a way to scale LLMs using older, low-cost chips, which would completely upend the AI industry by making expensive hardware investments obsolete. While I think the first two are the most likely, if the third is true, the AI bubble is headed for a crash. Also, it's worth noting that China can still acquire Nvidia chips through Singapore, much like how Europe sources Russian commodities via the Middle East.
