What is Divinity Original Sin 2, and WHY is it making reviewers CRAZY!?

Divinity Original Sin 2 is being hailed by multiple reviewers as one of, if not the best RPG of all time. Of all time. Seriously. What is it about this old-school crpg that’s got people so worked up and is it REALLY better than KOTOR II? The previous best RPG of all time? Mike and Jake like it, but can they get to the bottom of why this is getting some all-time praise?

This game has reviewers gushing. GUSHING, guys. Why? What's got everyone excited and is it worth your time? And, more to the point. What IS this game, anyway? Any fans want to help us answer those questions below?

Only critique I have is about the camera control, I have found it a little clunky in combat. That said I have enjoyed this game so much, the music (character creation give a musical instrument type during the game), story lines for party members, and so much voice acting. It has been a real treat so far after...except for underestimating a certain troll on a bridge.

It's a great CRPG that doesn't compromise on quality or complexity and comes with a genuinely innovative and exciting elemental system which makes its combat stand out from most games. It's rather satisfying beating tough enemies by using your spells smartly and manipulating the terrain to your advantage rather then gauging spell effectiveness purely by how much raw damage they inflict. Graphics are also amazing which is rare for an rpg overall and production values feel top notch, with voice acting for everything, and then there's tons of little details and interactivity with the game world that it makes it feel super immersive. Then there's the whole coop and dm system, which harkers back to nwn modules and the whole ethos of translating a rl d n d game into videogame format, a tradition started by games like baldurs gate. Really loving the game so far but that said.. I wouldn't call it perfect. For example i find interaction with npc party members a bit barebones (though it's nice they have their own motivations in regard to the main plotline), bioware rpgs still are the masters when it comes to chatty npc party members and having a lively party, in D:OS 2 they have something to say every once in a while at plot critical moments but overall there isn't much opportunity to interact with them and have massive branching dialogues. This is likely a side effect of every recruitable npc possibly also being a protagonist if you choose them, something which admittedly isn't to my own taste or interests. But really things like this are down to my own personal preferences as to what id like my ideal perfect rpg to be, rather then a fault in the games design itself. I ain't the type to go 10/10 best game evar and all that hyperbolic bs. For me it's just a really great rpg and between games like this, age of decadence and tyranny (not PoE or wasteland 2 though, both those games are massive letdowns as far as im concerned), it feels like rpgs have been getting a resurgence recently and can finally give competition to decades old games like baldurs gate 2 in debates about amazing rpgs.

it's simple, the game is great, it's well done, the devs respected the players and listened to what could make it better, kickstarter patrons even had a portrait made as a thanks and those portraits can be found in the game, literally, all those random paintings you find in boats and houses? those are real people, the kickstarter backers. there's also the fact that the devs understand gamers and doesnt try desperately to attract the mass of casual players by making the game easy to beat. when was the last time you had to actually concentrate on a game because of its high difficulty and beating a particularly difficult enemy makes your brain shoot endorfins into your bloostream as a reward? did any ubi, ea, konami game make you feel like that in the past decade? me neither

Wait... so you mean they developed a full game, with high production values, that includes hundreds of hours of content, and it DOESN'T have microtransactions? See, I was told game publishers need microtransactions in order to not go bankrupt instantly, so I'm a little suspicious of this one guys

Final Fantasy XV made money without microtransactions and with a development hell. It needed to sell 6 million copies to break even, it doubled that amount in like 2 months. It is possible yeah, but never heard of Vivendi? Search them up, then you will understand why EA, Ubisoft, etc NEED that money. Vivendi is like an evil cloud that nowadays consumes the gaming industry.

FF 15 doesn't have microtransactions as far as I know, (I don't own it, not my cup of tea, personally) but it does seem segmented and was clearly rushed out of the gate. The one universal criticism I saw about it was that the quality drops off like a rock in the last chapter, which is unfortunate. However, I think FF 15 is getting multiplayer in the future, which means microtransactions are basically inevitable.

It's simple Larian Studios are a team that actually make games because they like making games, i know, crazy right, that a game studio can create something that isn't just some consumer driven micro-transaction ridden cashgrab business. They also respond to fans on their forums and even implemented suggestions from the fans in DOS2,(i.e the polymorph class and playable undead race and many other things) they even went so far as to hire a portrait artist to paint some of their kickstarters portraits and put them in the game. Larian is love, Larian is life.

Well video games are fast becoming an established industry. And with every industry you will have its reliable juggernauts who churn out safe products (EA, Warner, Ubisoft) who keep the industry running and visionnaries that may or may not burn out after a few masterpieces who keep the Craft fresh (CD Projekt RED, Larian Studios, Obsidian Entertainment, Harebrained Schemes, etc). Both have their places, even if the former's is less palatable.
@FluffyFractalshard

Exactly! It is the new way of doing things: With passion not with just money in mind. The new paradigm is arriving! And it shows itself nicely in the success of such games like DOS2 or other great indie developers. The "grinding gear games" studio with path of exile are a shining example as well. their game is even free 2 play without being pay 2 win and they pump out one huge expansion after another. Funded just by donations and ingame purchases like a bigger stash or cosmetic items and pets.

Thank you for making such a nice review of DOS:2. I am a first hour backer because when Sven announced he was going to make a second game and he needed my help to make it bigger on kickstarter, I loved the first one so much that I blindly gave my money. The reward is finally here, one of the best RPG of all times. And if Larian ask me to help again for a DOS:3, unless I am broke as hell I will double what I gave for this one. Just watch the kickstarter updates guys, this studio is the best of the best in the industry today.

I am so serious, when I am playing this game every fight literally feels like I am in a intense brain dual with another person. The AI in this game is fucking insane, I really thought I wouldn't be able to get on with this game since all I have played for years now is real time combat RPGs. But it is the fact that it is so beautifully done and yet so so fucking brutally hard that it just sucked me in. And don't even get me started on the story telling, the incredible voice acting, or the fact that literally everything you do has an impact. If you can't tell I love this game immensely, and I am calling it right now this game is going to become a classic easily.

It's simple, story and characters wins over mindless grinding any day, it's the way RPG's used to be made before all the money grabbing developers came along. The script writing in this game is so well written, and it's all fully voice acted, every frickin npc in the game, it's actually insane. The REAL satisfaction you get after playing a game like this ISN'T the fact that you've levelled and customised your characters or learnt new abilities, BUT it's all the memorable interactions, the choices, knowing you could have played through completely differently and that the choices you made would completely change the way a quest plays out. And what's more is the combat in this game is incredible, like the best turn based strategic combat around, actually makes XCom 2 combat seem kinda boring in comparison.

I'm so proud of this game and Larian Studios. Their kickstarter was a breath of fresh air. I've never seen one executed so well. Lots of updates and enthusiastic vlogs, and they took the voice of the community seriously. Larian Studios has so much integrity to deliver everything they had promised. That seems to be lost with a lot of ambitious developers these days. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they are not based out of the US... Even the cost is less than some of the terribly underwhelming new releases! They truly delivered a brilliantly challenging, beautiful, deep, hilarious, game. Even the first DOS is a stand-up title worth another play-through. Much love for these guys!

Aman Pathak yep tottally different kinds of RPGs. Don't know much about persona, never had a chance to try it but consodering The Witcher and Divinity: one is a story of a certain character with very lore-heavy universe, dark atmosphere and action combat while the other is much lighter, play-how-you-want, do-what-you-want D&D-esque adventure with deep tactical combat and many puzzles. Both great RPGs yet so different. One feels like a great book, the other like a fun tabletop session.

Are you telling me that you can make fully voiced game without trowing roleplaying aspects away. That is BS! I watched Bethesda`s main writer for FO4 showing everyone that even Wheel of Choices was super hard to do. We have been told over and over that game like this is impossible to make, so it can not exist. I have played DOS EE and that game doesn`t exit as well. You guys and your fake games...

You skipped the worse part: Look at Larian size. Look at Bethesda, Bioware and EA size. Realize Larian is like 10000 times smaller than those. Realize Larian developed AND published their game. Realize Larian pulled out, as you mention, fully voiced game with about 100 thousands lines, superb graphics, superb sound, superb gameplay, superb (up to now, just started ACT2) story. Bethesda, EA, Ubi were all on my blacklist, now that I read your comment, they'll stay there even longer...

The game is amazing. It has a steep learning curve (as in: if you play it the first time you will die a lot since you dont yet know what levels different encounters will be at), but for a min-maxer and completionist like myself it actually is a bit too easy the second time around (at least post-drift wood). Rating the 4 acts: 1. Solid start, great writing and challenging enemies, introduces you to the exploration/loot/level-gameplay loop, overall second favorite act 2. My favorite act, huge area to explore, lots of interesting characters and quests, this is where doing stuff out of order is also the most punishing. 3. Meh. Quite short. The story progresses, but I did not feel the need to complete 100% of the island as I did in driftwood 4. Quite good over-all. Lots exploration and some satisfying conclusions to certain characters-stories. Great overall ending of the story too. But I feel like if you completed the previous acts completely and did not rush through, enemies will feel quite under-powered at this point. overall brilliant game and the best rpg I have played in a while, best coop rpg I have ever played probably.

Me and my mates have done tactician on the second act now, the trick is massively micro managing your enemies, especially in the boss fights, and exploring everything, doing every quest for xp and levels, its making the game last so long, 50-60 hours into our session and looking at doing honour mode next! Its a proper challenge!

When dealing with the houndmaster in the first area my friend and I teleported our ranger through a hole in the wall that lead up to some high ground on the side then our rogue used his ninjitsu backstab teleport on our own archer to get him through the hole as well and our inquisitor healed the archer. As a result we were able to start the fight by taking out one of their archers and positioning our ranger on high ground to snipe people. As a result we completely crushed the fight. It felt amazing.

I'm really enjoying this game - we rarely get classic turn-based RPGs nowadays, the release of DOS2 satisfied that demand. The character customization is superb - you can but don't have to stick to a class specific tree, instead you can borrow skills and traits from a different class to compliment the skills and traits of your main class, you can also hybridize your whole party, the options are limitless. And if that fails - fear not, you can always tweak anything at your base. The combat system is even more intricate than in the previous game - the battlegrounds have become more tactical with the addition of high-grounds, the surfaces mechanics from DOS1 are still present, the enemy AI is not stupid and utilizes everything in their arsenal to halt your progress. I can go on and on about the surfaces mechanics - it's surprising that the big AAA titles haven't thought of it.

I have this game, got it when it was in the early access stage and you only had the fort beginning area. I actually got a little concerned at the time with what was being put in there. But yeah then they go and finish the game and announce the actually release. Seeing it still in my steam library I think what's the harm I already spent the money. So I install the game and holy shit Larian have been working. As you lads said they have fleshed the game out with so many avenues for progression and voice acting for every single npc (as far as I have found). No matter how insignificant, they have a voice! They polished and improved a lot of systems. Honestly my own 2 cents on why its doing so well is also due to the amount of crappy practises going on in the gaming industry which this game doesn't even concern itself with. Well played Larian, well played indeed.

I doubt highly that Divinity OS2 will get GOTY. Hardcore RPGs and most high involvement, thinking persons games, almost always get overlooked for the more "pick up and play" games like CoD, FIFA etc. This is why I believe GOTY will go to Destiny 2 (or version 1.5 as it sounds like) because it sold well, doesn't take much thinking about to play and, more importantly, the publisher funded review outlets will have a huge influence on the final result as Bungie are a bunch of delicate snowflakes that respond to criticism by silently denying them access to the studio. I would have liked to have seen Horizon get that accolade but again, I don't think it will because of what I've mentioned previously. Isn't it just sad that gaming has fallen this far?
@nestrus834

chomerly I think that 'Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' will get GOTY, and not Destiny 2. Just look how much praise 'LOZ' is getting, while Destiny 2 is not getting as much praise. Destiny 2 is also getting criticized for its lack of innovation.

Nestrus That may be true but I'm looking at it from the perspective of how the big games corps. either directly fund, or bribe for us normal folk, and directly influence the decisions of the awards in the first place. We need to remember that there is massive conflict of interest in the gaming reviews sector right now and it's the independents like PGG, Jim sterling and Angry Joe etc that don't sell out in order to line their pockets. What I'm saying is, don't be surprised if the game you think should get the GOTY award doesn't.

i got the first D:os on ps4 the other month, and god did i enjoy it. it was a perfect throwback to the old sacred days, with intelligent quest and combat design. only problem was that some quest solutions were quite obscure. like, to progress you have to find this break this door, which is the only breakable door in the last 10 hours, hidden in rubble, and that will activate a portal you can teleport through.

Never played this game before this week, or the first one. Jumped straight into it on Tactician challenging myself to a lone-wolf playthrough which I found in the talents. Basically playing with 2 characters the entire game. It's been a blast. There is nothing I love more than a challenge when it comes to games and the amount of times I have had to reload before a battle because I fucked up somehow, using my skills at the wrong time or simply getting myself blitzed due to beng n the wrong position tactically at the start is amazing. About 15 hours into my save and I have progressed about halfway through Driftwood at this point, and it is incredible how densely populated with various things to do this game is..Even the fucking animals have little quests you can do for them. A random rat might hold the secret to finding a treasure vault...

The fact that the journalists highly recommend will boost their sales tremendously. A big-dick move is doing something that is both ballsy and admirable. For instance, them repeatedly standing up for their beliefs against the sort of bullshit that a large part of the AAA games companies are stuffing their games with, or like now they're speaking up about a game that I personally backed back when the prequel was on kickstarter, and promoting it for actually doing the shit they want other companies to do. That right there is a big-dick move.

So were the next 30 or 40 times I pulled that off :D. The game is frickin' awesome, and so replayable, especially if you do use some of the premades, since their back stories have a big impact on how your story turns out.

Bought it and instantly fell in love. It's like I'm play a video game version of DnD and it's great. Really rewards creative thinking. I disarmed a poison gas trap by using telekinesis to place a crate over it...a freaking crate. I honestly didn't think that would work but it did and just made me realize how in depth this game was. Endless amounts of possibilities with it. Plus not to mention with the amount of content you get its only $45:00 that's a rare thing these days and I was shocked at how much lower it was from the normal price of new games.

DOS2 shits on every other RPG that's on the market. IDK how this small team created such a masterpiece, but the other big devs and publishers should be embarrassed. Hell, look at Destiny 2, it's a shell of a game riddled with microtransactions that's nothing but a DLC update to the first Destiny. It would take another 8 Destiny "sequels" to equal the amount of progress and advancement that DOS2 made from DOS1.

I don't think you're being biased, I think it is a perfect mix of all the elements you spoke about in story and game play and world design etc. I've not played a strategy game since dow1 & supreme commander, and never played anything like sacred or neverwinter, this is the first rpg strategy I've played and I'm 100% addicted to its depth of lore, choices and progression. From my POV not having ever played this kind of game, I'd recommend it to almost any gamer looking for an adventure because that is exactly how it feels, a choose your own adventure almost - even though there are missions and quests - you're free to experience it in so many ways. Totally empowering and entertaining game. 11/10 Larian. also pretty af!

I think modern RPG(final fantasy, witcher, etc) fans like myself will still have a hard time getting into DnD type RPG's because they are that much different, and much, MUCH less forgiving and more overwhelming, tbh. But for those who love the role playing aspect the most, should enjoy this type of game. Combat is hard to get use to because there are a million things you can do and create, but I think the developers understand that and so they make it to where you can play the game without failing miserably, no matter how you want to play it. This will be my first DnD game I've seriously even tried for more than a couple hours (Original Sin was my first and I enjoyed it, but didn't have time to play much), and am looking forward to it. Also looking forward to the Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter Knights/Planescape enhanced bundles coming out this fall. I really hope I enjoy Original Sin 2 on my PS4 Pro. I'm itching to rip the plastic off the case and install it.

The thing that surprised me the most is the music score. You walk around and hear one thing, you enter a building and hear another. Then you enter the cellar of that building and hear another, and they are each unique to their own specific location. In Ryker's mansion there is a ghost that would play a request and it's a ~4 minute orchestra or a pleasant piano. and it's not even a quest. it's just a side note if you bother with it at all

they said that console versions are possible, you should go the forums (the devs actually read the forums, i know, crazy, right?) and say this same thing over there, you're a console gamer and you'd like to have an x1/ps4/sw version of DOS2...the more people ask for it the more likely it's gonna happen

Never played another game like this one. Closest thing was Dragon Age Origins. This has been an awesome experience all the way around. Awesome gameplay and I love how vicious the AI is! Also I was really surprised because I thought I'd made a mistake leveling up my character that they let you respec often with no penalty. Even changing your hair cut if you want. Build any skill set you want on any character. The customization is HUGE. But the voice acting and story are fun too and I also REALLY like the environments despite the overhead angle. The fact that the gameplay is so heavily affected by the environments too just shows how good the mission designs are.

I wish I could get in RPGs that have a fantasy setting as much as other people. But I'm an arachnophobic and developers who make these games always seem to have a hardon for huge spiders as big as the screen itself. And this is no exception. It surely looks great and sounds really interesting, but I won't even try it simply because I already know that I would eventually encounter spiders and I would nope the hell away from that leaving the game unfinished like it happened with the first one. People always make fun of me because they say that "hurr durr they're just a bunch of pixels on a screen" and while to a degree I'd agree with that statement, they can't understand what it feels like. It's a mix of a jumpscare you would get from a good horror game/movie and a puking feeling just from seeing the silhouette of a spider. It might be fake, it might not be real. But it still triggers me. Such a shame. I wish developers would either understand that not everybody is comfortable with giant insects, giant spiders and/or have phobias or at the very least upload small patches that take those things out of the game and/or change them with something else. Like some mods for Skyrim that change spiders with bears and thus makes it bearable (no pun intended) to play it.

In my whole playthrough (Honour mode, save gets deleted if you die) there was only one spider and that was a Werespider, yet she only uses her spider form briefly and it's optional. You dont need to fear the spiders at all, for there is only one so far, i think. She's in Driftwood Arena and hides herself as the Decadent One.

I haven't seen a spider yet 20 hours in, unless you count a skeleton spider (don't ask how that works).

ChaosZero ノブ I know what you mean with the hardon for spiders. I love Rpgs and the amount of spiders they use is sickening. I tend to have a sibling deal with them our close me eyes xD but I'm over 30 hours in this and I have not seen a single one and from playing the first game (cause this is a sequel) and I don't recall a single spider. I say try it

I like to describe this game as "D&D on the PC done right, with the best DM on the planet." It's the most apt description I can come up with. It's everything I like about D&D, but in a more accessible, possibly more fun format. Anything that can be done with the game engine can almost always be done anytime, anywhere. See a chest but can't figure out how to get to it? Just teleport your buddy up! Can't find a way through a locked gate? Fly over it! Want to poison your friend covertly? Dye a poison flask red! It's really an RPG-lover's wet dream.
