I do however hope it turns out great as if it is successful we get more, which i am all for. I have not tried div 1 or 2 yet i will probably pick up 2 and give it a shot. One of the few games, I would wipe my memory of, just to play it fresh once again. Those 4 man (all beginner) 12h+ sessions were something else :D The puzzle like structure of each arc, with the need to figure out the correct order of encounters (Driftwoodwas my favorite arc) felt really rewarding and exploring never was more fun. Replaying the game is fun, however once you know what you are doing it becomes rather easy after a few level ups unless one is up for a self-imposed challenge like using elemental magic (there are some balance issues with the different skills: an all physical damage party is always preferable, due to the armor system and their access to some of the best skills even early on).

Great, great game. The story has some amazing moments that even with the isometric perspective gave me goosebumps like the candles part in Lohse's quest or what your companions say after the final boss. The combat is very good once you start knowing what you're doing and the characters are very likeable, I actually wish there was more banter between them. My only complains are that it can be a bit obtuse at some points like the battle with the revenant lizards in the Consulate and some bullshit moments like the Aetera fight (the only one I had to cheese) or the spiders in Arx sewers that infect you with eggs of death fog which is literally a weapon of mass destruction in the lore.

I've startd to play this game in november of 2020, with 3 of my friends, with small one hour sessions, and in the beginning of january, we had like 20 hours, barely in the middle of driftwood. A the end of one of our sessions, I coldn't wait any longer, and played a new character for 24 hours straight, and ended up finishing the game in just over 90 (first playthrough, I wanted to find everything, etc.). I'm currently playing a second solo-playthrough. I still find small (and big) things I missed the first time through, and I'm not even worried about being bored out of the game or the story for when I'm playing with my friends! that's how awesome I think this game is!

A lot of great rpgs this decade like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and The Outer Worlds, but Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition is still my favourite. What's especially amazing is how well this plays on the PS4. They clearly put a lot of thought into the control scheme when porting it to consoles. The perfect PC to console port.

@@nayyarrashid4661 Ah. Didn't even know it was out for the Switch, if I'm honest. I feel like this game would be better on stationary consoles or the PC. The Switch is great, but not every ported title makes sense to play on the Switch, even if the accessibility of playing it on the move is there like how ugly as hell The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt looks, with longer loading times too. The Switch is purposely not that powerful, so I tend to play games that are exclusively developed for it, or have a simplicity to it in graphics and narrative. I've played through it dozens of times now. Love it.

Nice review! The game is amazing, with superb writing, world building and a plethora of choice very few games of any genre can compete with. Definitely the best RPG I've ever played. Although, to be fair there are "super strong builds". I'd call them OP but they do require actual game knowledge to pull off. For example, I'm running 2 characters on Lone Wolf right now (halfway through Act 2): Fane as Aerotheurge and Sebille as Hydrosophist. Most fights play out like this: Turn one, Sebille goes first because she has 50+ Initiative and over 30 Wits. By the time she's done, most enemies, especially those that go after her and before Fane are either Frozen or completely dead. So Fane shocks the shit out of the rest and then turn 2 is Evasion on both and so the Ranger and Warfare dudes can't hurt them. The casters can't do shit either as both stack a shit ton of Magic Armor. 99% of the fights I played so far haven't lasted more than 3 turns and even that is optimistic. The only fight I had to restart multiple times, which is somewhere around 5, was The Eternal Aetera. I was underleveled and had to figure out where to place her so both of my peeps could dunk on her properly. I'm not saying the game is easy, because it ain't. You gotta learn a lot of systems before you can do the stuff that I described. And I haven't even gone deeper into the crafting and consumables part of the game yet. That's like a whole different level right there. Anyway, I agree with you. It's the RPG of the decade and much more. Also it's very unlikely anyone who plays it once will stop there. It's made to be replayed. Plus, Sir Lora. I mean, that guy is just a ton of fun by himself.

Would anyone recommend this for the switch? I have the first one for my Xbox (never finished it though) and wanted the second one for my switch as I tend to play that more. Any thoughts?

My only gripe with this game was how the damage works in the game. Towards late game a lot of the strategy dissolved in the combat and just became a chain of “who can one hit who first”. I also thought the second half of the game the progression kinda filled down a bit, with the first two acts being beyond exciting finding all of these new abilities and whatnot, and then just having that slow waaaaay down after the second act. Idk if they’ve patched this or reworked the late game combat or damage scaling since I last played it(at launch, beat it within a month and then haven’t really touched it since, but this video has inspired me to)but I hope they have so I can truly enjoy the latter half of the game :) acts one and two were one of the greatest experiences in any RPG I’ve ever played though, and I highly recommend it to any true RPG fan!

Always wanted to get this game but I have to ask: how important is the first divinity to 2’s story? I’d love to play both but I honestly don’t have the time to play both games.

i started this game with a group of friends and they didn't get on nearly often enough as i liked to play it. so i started my own and had WAY more fun. i played it all the way through and immediately started it again and my second time through was EVEN BETTER. the story can be so different depending on your choices along the way! definitely the best rpg of the decade. easily.

as someone who doesnt love the top down view i finished this gmae three times as a polymorf-rogue, inquisitor and elemental ranger. my main bummer with this game is that if you are playing by yourself you cant make your entire party evil like kotor 2 which is something i wish i knew before hand

I had to install 3 players mod for DOS, never really got into isometric turn-based RPG. But boy, once the cherry popped I couldn't stop admiring this game. Just finished DOS2 for the 3rd time with a friend, and still considering if I should play it again.

@MrMatty If you ever do another Q and A please use this as mine.... How many games do you own? How many of those have you beaten? (Pc and console) I only ask as I know the wife and I have a back catalog of 75+ games to get to as we grow age and get time...... As for THIS game your covering we were glad you enjoyed... the ONLY game that rivals this game are the original PC master class games of Baldur's Gate Planetscape Torment and Neverwinter Knights and Icewing dale which thankfully all have modern console releases and play well on the console. Was a treat to see you cover this and hope some of your 400k subs check this out if they missed this gem.

it's on a steam sale now. How much better is this then the first one? I got bored with the first game about 3 hours or so in. Is it just an updated version or does it feel like its kind of a new game also? I need something a bit different. I got tired of the combat for some reason I get bored with these styles RPGs with the pause combat. Like pilliars of eternity and games like that.

If you're doing a new play through there is a mod called like Joyless Beginnings or something where you skip Fort Joy and just start after the [Redacted Spoilers] at like level 10 or something with a good chunk of change.
