Hi, so what is echolalia exactly? Why is your child repeating words or phrases? Well echolalia is the repeating words or phrases. But when it comes to autism and echolalia, it is very common with autistic people which I wanted to explore in this video.
I go into exactly what echolalia is, share examples of echolalia, the difference between delayed echolalia and immediate echolalia and why autistic people use echolalia.

I'm one of the five people on earth who's never seen the Peter Jackson films or read the books. Although the other day I watched the animated version made in the 70s (because I wanted to finish watching all the films directed by Ralph Bakshi). As someone who was judging it on it's own merits it's actually a pretty good film and doesn't deserve anywhere near the hate it gets from Jackson fans. It only adapted Fellowship of the Ring and most of The Two Towers so it ends at the battle of Helm's Deep (a part two was planned but it never happened so the film just sort of stops with no real conclusion).

@@IndieAndy I believe we agree. I think it’s WONDERFUL. But I also can’t operate in, say, a business meeting doing auditory stimming. I really can’t live in an apartment doing it either cause it’s too loud through the walls and floors. So while I WISH it was more understood, the need to engage in all types of masking as an autistic person to function in society is a challenging reality I’ve experienced.

I'll often repeat sounds over and over to myself because I like the sound, like my recent one is "boop boop" after I watched the videos on KZbin of a talking Raven, and I also repeat the same line of a song over and over, or I do also repeat things people have said back to them because I'm still processing the question they're asking I think?

Aww you know the ads that KZbin plays on videos? I will literally sing or repeat the words from these adverts everytime... So weird 🤣👍 But yeah I think that by repeating what the person has said, it's definitely processing it.

Echolalia helps me a lot. If I can provide a quote/impression to a response, it always feels satisfying for some reason. Sometimes it's easier to get my point across too. For repeating words right away like "late late late", I usually just say the last part of their sentence back to them. If I have low energy that day or trouble being verbal, it's about all I can muster but it's just me trying to let them know I hear what they're saying (and usually I need a few more moments to fully process it).

Whenever I order something alphabetically without using the computer programme's functions, I saying (not singing) the alphabet song the write down the letters in order because I have to have the letters written down in order due to not I don't know the order without getting the song. I do the same with months of the year to get their order just right too. I presume that's me using delayed echolalia. As for movie quotes; Star Wars Prequel Trilogy quotes that been turned into memes spring to mind, "Do you know the tragedy of Darth Pragueis the Wise?", "Now this is pod racing", "this is a great mistake", "unlimited power!", "It begun, The Clone War has" and even a behind the scenes quote "It's poetry, it rhymes". I use movie quotes mostly for comedy but that last one is my rule on how to write narratives.

Thank you so much for this video 🙂 I have quite a lot of repeating words/phrases mostly in my head all the time, but sometimes I let them out or do random beats out loud like the vocal stimming. My girl does both immediate and delayed echolalia especially with lines from movies. She probably does it more because she does not suppress as much as I have learned how to. My masking/suppressing stuff wears me out more also.

I don’t know if this counts as the same thing; but many times my conversations go like this: Friend: “Hey, I’m going to McDonalds do you want anything?” Me: “McDonalds? No I’m good.” F: “Do you want me to swing by anywhere else on the way?” M: “Do I want you to go somewhere else? No. No need to make a special trip for me.” F: “It wouldn’t be a problem.” M: “You say it’s not a problem; but I feel like that would be imposing.” F: “Are you sure?” M: “Sure I’m sure.”

I think I went through either echolalia or delayed echolalia stage when I was non-verbal. It’s interesting because I thought it was just stimming (because of global developmental delay) but I would keep repeating words from tv shows and films. I didn’t say my first word on my own until I was five. Also my favourite film quotes are “Anita Darling” and “may the force be with you”. Lord of the rings is a classic too; you cannot argue with that 😀

Yeah, when I was younger I would copy things I've herd from a movie or tv show etc. I don't really do it anymore but I knew plenty of kids in my classes that continued to do it. Unless it's when I'm alone and I think it's fun to talk to myself, although that's a little different from echolalia.

Now that you've explained it, I realize that I do this a lot. I have always called it my "word association Tourette's", because I have to say certain words out loud when someone else speaks a trigger word! E.g. when someone answers their phone by saying "Yello" instead of "Hello", I have to say "purple"...no matter if I'm a part of that phone call or not! It makes me giggle to learn there's a real name for it. Thanks!

My sons echolalia was very strong when he was younger. He mostly quoted his favorite movies all the time or would echo what we'd say if he wasn't understanding. He improved tremendously when he got into public school with speach therapy but then regressed over the summer due to being away from school. He's 6 now and I'm finally able to afford childcare during the summer which is helping him! What a difference it makes when he's around other kids and interacting with the world around him. P.s. I love lord of the rings too!

I‘m autistic and from Switzerland so I speak german. There was a german comedian called Loriot (He died) and I‘m really big fan of him and I‘ve watched pretty much all of his sketches. I noticed that I remember many lines from his sketches because I‘ve watched them so often and I use them in conversation at random times just to confuse people xD. For example: „Auf dem Campingplatz in Bozen liegen die Waschräume separat“ which translates to „At the campsite in Bolzano, the washrooms are separate.“ I think it is very funny (I have a weird sense of humour) because it is so random and people get confused by it xD. Idk whether this is related to this though.

I did not realize that this had a name until recently. I always knew I was a little different, but have recently been diagnosed with autism. I think the name echolalia is very appropriate because a lot of times when someone says some thing that is very catchy to me or that I agree with I will repeat the sentence after. I do it a lot with jokes too, but it is because I enjoy the words they are saying, and it actually makes sense to me. This is in a world where a lot of things don’t make a lot of sense to me. I take things very literal, and somethings just don’t really make sense when you think like that I guess. It’s kind of like somebody telling a joke and being the only person that doesn’t get it. And that’s usually me sometimes I’ll get the joke but it will be way too late or even late days after.😂

Just found your channel and subscribed! Love the informative content. I never used to think I used echolalia but I think I do it in quite a subtle way, like repeating the end of a question someone has asked me to give me time to process it. When I was younger, I used to quote a lot of films (mainly Harry Potter) so perhaps this is it too. I don't have a YT channel but I can understand why you find it easier to start filming once you've done your intro - makes perfect sense to me. Thanks for educating me!!

With the immediate form of echolalia, might a person (frequently) repeat themselves, either to themselves (because they like the sound of it) or to someone else (to feel like they’ve gotten the message across)?

Hey Andy! Lord of the Rings is awesome! This video helped me a lot. I had been wondering if echolalia applied to me or not. I use lines from movies or tv in conversation or things i had heard other people say in the past. Sometimes i will hear a word from a line in a song and say or sing the line from the song. A lot of times the line from the song is in some sort of context with the coversation i may be having and sometimes it's not. At times i would go around singing the same line or phrase from a song over again until someone made fun of me or they became upset from hearing me repeat myself over and over. In my late teens and early 20's i began suppressing my behaviour so i didn't stand out as much but i would still repeat things in my head instead of out loud. Up until recently i had thought echolalia applied only to those repeating something right after hearing it. Something else i do is if i hear a word and i'm not sure of the definition sometimes i will repeat the word obsessively in my head until i can find out what the word means. It was difficult to deal with before smartphones and google because if i didn't have a dictionary on hand i would have to go the library to find the definition so i could stop repeating the word in my head over and over again.

One question, why do you keep cutting in strange clips of random people? Some link to what you are saying most don’t, for me, link in. I get distracted by them and then loose track of what you are saying. Your a really good speaker so don’t need these added bits. Thank you for what you are doing keep doing it.

I wasn’t quite understanding what echolalia was from it’s definition, I couldn’t think of any time I’ve heard anyone doing that. Until 2:10 when you brought up this example. I’ve known several people in high school, into adulthood who have done this type of thing numerous times. Most of the time they are a little odd or maybe nerdy, like some of the dudes who play DnD. It’s possible some of these people may have been slightly autistic and that would explain a lot. Anyways, that example rang a big bell. Kinda cool

I do a lot of Echolalia. I use Echolalia as a way of stimming. I sometimes repeat things that I’ve heard in my past, because sometimes I feel like they’re funny to me. If I hear a song by one of my favorite artists, or if I like a way someone says a certain word, not only do I use it as echolalia, but I create an inside person with the name of the favorite song that I like, or if I like the way one of my favorite musicians or artists says a certain word, I’ll create a person inside my head with that name. And yes, I even repeat swear words as a way of echolalia.
