The pandemic has cemented, for me, that the block button is a beautiful feature, because I have not been more frustrated in fandom than I have in the past year. Because that is why the 'I can't wait to see the meltdowns' adults are coming from, it is frustration. Even if an artist tags NSFW work or conversations properly, no matter the context, they can get into serious legal trouble for 'exposing minors to explicit content', when the minors are the ones ignoring warnings, or even lying about ages on sites like Patreon and bypassing paywalls to see content that they shouldn't be seeing. That is why I am ready for the reactions of people that previously could easily dupe a computer system, or simply click a button, so see content, have an actual person in the way of getting it. Not all, but a very annoying percentage of the minors that got involved in fandom don't understand the meaning of '18+ only.' That is why there is a frustration. Kids are pushing themselves where the don't belong, and then attempting to blame the artists for their discomfort, despite the warnings. I'm not saying minors will never, ever look at things they aren't supposed to, I just am tired of them getting upset over the content they were warned was present, and then trying to regulate the content adults are making for other adults via group harassments campaigns. Things like that won't fly at a con, and it is a lesson that needs to be taught.

I understand the frustration of, if you’re an artist, being constantly harassed online by teens and it seeming like, no matter how much you warn kids about “tipping over booths” and your own content, teenagers never seem to listen. However, getting super excited to the point that you hope you have that terrible interaction is strange to me. I think it’s a typical all big talk (from both sides) but nothing will actually happen at conventions. I will say it seems that everything is getting very purified, mainly from America (im in Europe), such as that discussion on Kink at Pride. Those types of shipping/kink/sexual stuff discussions and fights don’t really happen in other parts of the world. It’s strange, as a non American, see the people who self identify as left leaning want sexual censorship and it only seems to help the right in the long run. I also think a lot of teenagers think that NSFW artists will just plant their NSFW on a billboard in the art alley, when they’re usually in the back/wrapped up/covered with post-it’s ext, and also ask for ID before selling.

My brother has come around to the idea of conventions so i'm going to see if we can go to one sometime. I can't wait to be that one big sister dragging him around the dealer halls like "I CAN SHOW U THE WOOOOOOORLD"

Why I’m hoping most cons are still curated. Not just for the art quality, BUT so that the staff can make sure that people are chill. We’re there to sell, we’re there to represent ourselves as a business. We can have fun, yes, BUT stooping to others levels. Nah. But like you said, a LOT of these kids (and adults) who spout this stuff, they feel safe saying it behind the safety of their screens, but the moment they have to come face to face with a real live person, they freeze. And artists, please, if someone DOES cause problems at your booth, flag down the artist alley staff and security. That’s what they are there for.

Kids on one end not understanding that the internet won't cater specifically to them, and adults who are too obsessed with "triggering the libs" to care about the harm they cause. I get your frustration. Me personally I hope these are just internet tough guys who won't do jack because consequences are scary, and the ones that are bold enough can mess around and find out.

Oh boy the Genshin Impact part gives me flashbacks. I actually don't ship any of the characters much (there are some I like, but am not very invested in) but the shipping drama (from both the shippers *and* anti-shippers) makes me want to leave to the wild bush of Alaska and hide in a fetal position from the rest of humanity until my untimely death.

Unfortunately it’s not teen vs teen drama. It’s teen vs adults. And no. They can’t show NSFW art to minors because that can get your banned. There’s rules and regulations to follow if you want to table at a Artist Alley. From what I know there is only one artist on Tik Tok who claim they want to show NSFW content to minors just to tr*gger them which is very disgusting and made the drama kinda worse because how it started was never about NSFW. Just SFW ship related stuff because teens have a tendency of harassing other people for drawing a ship they don’t like 😅😅

I've seen some tension with teens in fandoms when it comes to mature content, but never this open hostility between them and actual, adult artists :'D Lets just hope the people running the convention will make sure everyhting goes smoothly~ At the cons i've went to, the organization for the Dealers Den/ Artist Alley has always been great from what i could tell, they would never allow such shenanigans! Also i would LOVE videos about making/ selling merch and all the other topics you mentioned! I've been thinking about giving it a try myself someday and getting some pointers from someone with epxerience is always great^^

Sadly, I don't think I could realistically have a stand at an artist alley, due to my illnesses. However, in a pretend world where I would be able to, and I would be selling/showing off a lot of 18+ stuff, most likely I'd talk to younger people nicely. I know it can be panic inducing to be yelled at, so I'd rather be nice. Plus, this teenager will grow up one day, and be the age appropriate to view this stuff. Why be a PP-head and scare them off forever? Idk why people are so excessively mean these days. I've seen it too, but theres usually never a reason to shid bricks for it. Of course, I'd be nice up until something bad happens. If I get yelled at by a kid, I will most likely yell back (pretty much an automatic response to yelling, since yelling is actually a real trigger of mine... oof. I get one of these "panic attacks" that I forget everything about after the fact, where I yell instead of anything else normal people do when panicking lol).

YES! We should be helping people to have a good time now that things are finally opening back up! I see people on tik tok purposely making new problematic merch just to pass kids off! I also appreciate the people on tik tok who tell people the right way to deal with people who harass you at artist ally and also for kids that see things that make them uncomfortable. Just report it to the workers at the con and move on with your day, don't cause problems for others who are just trying to enjoy themselves after the long year of 2020

Personally I just don't talk to anyone anymore really, lol. I have literally seen kids/ minors make claims to the point that cease and desist letters have had to be sent. That typically stops it-- but only for that one person. They think it's games, but you cannot easily repair professional reputations. And with how often companies look up new hires, it CAN be damaging for people. That's why I feel so many artists have taken their shippy/ nsfw and put it behind paywalls :/

while i think its wrong for adults to purposefully go out of their way to trigger minors in artist alleys, its also not their fault if theyre selling something within the con rules and a teen starts freaking out from seeing some fictional ship they dont like. as a proshipping adult, frankly i would find it hilarious if a minor has a public meltdown over their notp, but i would never go out of my way to shove it in their face.

I have noticed a lot of strict cut offs between ages these days. Sort of like I'm a part of this age group so I don't like you because you're a part of this other age group. There is also of course those people trying to piss people off, especially children in fandoms and such for their own enjoyment. Sometimes I even see people still around 16 gatekeeping characters and such. One particular example is a person who had an oc they hardcore shipped with another character and would activly complain on their insta story when people tried to ship that character with their oc's or other canon characters. They would put slides before certain posts claiming it as 18+ content when the majority of the fandom was made up of minors and they themselves we not 18 or above. Then people started to get even more angry over them making practically every character attracted to their oc and as far as I know about half of the major fandom on insta avoided them, half supported them, and they basically kept a ton of followers from their 18+ content. This person would activly argue with people who disagreed with them or asked them nicely to take down a post and expected to be treated like a higher up. There were people my friends hated because they talked with that person regularly, though I would chat with them and they were some of the most genuine and kind people I knew at the time. This wasn't an exact example, but it was my first interaction with someone older pissing people off for their own enjoyment. I just hope that they realized how they actually hurt people who were friends to them they had dropped, and how that wasn't a good mindset or way to treat people. Overall, just hope they learned from that and moved on to treat others better.

by how some ticktock kids are acting im not gonna be suprised that at least one kid will trhow a fit however if that happen the con or the artist ally should put down the hammer nd ban that kid for around 3 years either from the ally or the con itself however if you are a grown adult that is happy or even exited and im talking about REALLY exited to make kids uncomfy or down right trigger them then you have a problem that needs to be sorted out asap i can understand the consern tho too ive seen some of the most nasties harrasment since the lockdowns around the world because people have more time on the internet and at home but that also means social skills are down too so we might have kids who are all bark but no bite im more scared of kids taking photos or videos of the artist without their consent in the ally and spreading rumors or shit talk them then i am about kids trhowing a fit because even at big big cons people will remember you and artist talk with eachother
