For the record the median good delivery fursuit costs 5k-8k USD and is based on the assumption of 80 hours of work, or two weeks full time, plus materials. Over 10k is what one pays for a high demand A-list maker and/or a complex suit. It's still accurate that the suit inside the car costs more than the car.

I myself love American malaise era cars and cars that normal people would think have no reason to be preserved or restored. The typical aspirational super car, hyper car, ultra luxury car or other "Look at me, look at how much money I have" car does not draw my interests. I see them and I feel the same as a normal person sees a 3 year old Camry. On the other hand if I see a car the was seen by most people as disposable being well cared for and loved like a 1986 Chevy Cavalier, 94 Saturn SL1, 96 Ford Taurus wagon, Dodge Neon, a late 80s Corolla or the like, it instantly draws my attention.

@LexYeenАй бұрын
I strongly encourage you to analyze the _why_ behind your aversion to the furry fandom, because hating something "for some reason" isn't exactly a good reason. After all, since our fandom has a higher proportion of LGBTQIA+ people than the global population in general does, a lot of anti-furry sentiment is just thinly-disguised homophobia or transphobia.
@wheniztheendАй бұрын
@@LexYeen Oh, I've never genuinely hated Furries. And I've been trying to understand Furries with an open mind. I still don't understand the appeal (fully). But yeah, no hate from me. (Just some parts of the Internet were telling me I was supposed to hate them for some reason, which I never understood the why behind that either). Or actually, I do know why certain parts of the Internet hate on Furries, it's because of the homophobia/ just edgy little kids that hate on anyone being different.
@mrbillybobableАй бұрын
@wheniztheend don't feel bad about struggling to understand the appeal. It's just one of those things that some people have a natural affinity towards, even if they can't really explain why. It's just like any other passion/preference. Someone who isn't passionate about sports may intellectually understand and appreciate all the reasons sports fans give about why they like sports. But they'll never truly understand that passion on a deep personal level themselves, no matter how hard they legitimately try. And there's nothing wrong with that. There's an organization called furscience that has a book which provides a more readable summary of all their psychological research on furries. There's a free download of it somewhere, otherwise the paperback version is just the cost of printing.

My favorite car is the Pontiac Aztek. In Tan. The same tan that's used on my fursuit. Which I made (with some help and a premade headbase) myself. My car is an imperfect form of that car. It's got cosmetic issues. I had to do a lot of legal work to get it in my name. And on top of all of that, it's a rare model. It's a base model with no factory options, but with AWD. I love my Aztek immensely, and I would never trade it for the world. I don't care that it's "ugly". It's friend shaped to me. My car has his own fursona, ears, nose/whiskers and tail. I would go further and suggest that it's not even cars that are "friend shaped" and more about the owner placing their own enjoyment of the car over the validation of strangers. Like, when you do a really nice collectible car you can reasonably surmise ahead of time that strangers are going to admire it when it's done, and some people desire that kind of validation for their efforts... whether it's collecting trophies at car shows or just endlessly "one-upping" strangers in the instagram comment section. Furry car culture places almost no value on how outsiders perceive the car, whether they're friend-shaped or not. I have a Trans Am because I grew up wanting one and because *I* think they're cool. While it's nice when strangers have nice things to say about it, the only thing that has ever mattered is whether or not *I'm* enjoying the car. I think that might be the bigger sub-cultural attitude that pervades furry car stuff.
@evanrhildrethАй бұрын
Fandoms are formed by people who are passionate about a subject. They are people who are *capable* of feeling passionate for a subject, and tend to feel passionate about *all* the things they enjoy, like art, cars, even cooking! Therefore it makes sense that furries - who feel passionate about anthropomorphic animals, and therefore capable of feeling passionate, would also feel passionate about other things in their lives like art or cars.

Yipyip, definitely a car furry~ Lots of excellent observations made here, and I can definitely confirm a number of them in my case. I'm very much a DIY shade-tree mechanic by necessity, as all the cars I've owned were purchased under $1000 or given to me, badly neglected/abused, and subsequently rehab'd by my own two paws. For example, I bought a '96 Lexus ES300 Coach edition that turned out to be a "buy here, pay here" used lot car for several years before I bought it. It was badly neglected due to each owner driving it for about a year, then it being reposessed over and over, so no maintenance was ever done for the poor thing... Literally bought an entire parts car and meticulously restored it to a usable state again, all because I loved the car like someone would fall in love with a stray cat. Just recently, I rebuilt the transmission in a 2010 Hyundai Accent bought off of FB for $600, all because I legit felt sorry for the car. It upset me seeing how apathetic the previous owner was with caring for it, just treating it like a beater until they grenaded the transmission and decided to punt the car on FB. Yet another car that's "friend shaped". X3 I mean, it even has that adorable mechanical telephone bell chime for the "door ajar" sound. How can you *not* love that? Might also explain why I prefer the '99-'02 GM-T800 trucks over the "post facelift" ones. The older ones have a more friendly appearance to the front grille/headlights, while the newer ones always looked "angry" and "tough" to me. Plus, I have a '00 RCSB Silverado, so the proportions sorta give it a "cute and small" look when compared to other trucks of the same lineup. I love that truck so much~ ^w^

Man you making the point of furries loving unloved cars really hits home. I drive a 2001 Honda insight with a manual and I see all my coworkers think it's kinda neat but still scoff at it, they all like old muscle cars or big fancy fast aggresive cars, and I just never got excited about them. Sure they look cool but I LOVE the mundane cars with quirky features that I could go on about, digital gauge clusters and working crt touchscreens??? I feel like I get way more looks and attention from driving my goofy slow little insight that is pretty much all diy repaired vs all the people with their fancy corvettes and professionally detailed exteriors and interiors, it just doesn't hit the same

Your statement about the difference between a good thesis and a bad thesis at the beginning of this video is something that every English Class student should have repeated at them starting in like 5th grade 🎉 that statement alone would massively elevate the quality of student writing

Now admittedly, I'm not a furry, but I've always been a bit different and I'm only getting more so with some of the realizations I've made and learned about myself recently. I've always loved weird, cheap, unknown cars for some time now. I wonder if me feeling like a bit of a fluke myself is the reason I love cars that aren't loved, known, or respected.

3 minutes in and I already entirely agree. My favorite car is the Buick Reatta, which is very friend shaped and forgotten. It also has the same touchscreen as the Buick you mentioned (though you made an error, it’s the Riviera, not the Regal).

This made me so happy. You hit literally everything I love - furries, cars, and proper thesis writing. XD Welcome to the fandom, Mr. Regular. Hope to see you at a furry con in the future! We can talk obscure English books from our Master thesis days. ;)

oh yea, there's a HUGE group of furries who are, for whatever reason, REALLY into cars. i think it's the same reason there are so many furries into fantasy and roleplaying, or costuming, or IT etc... furry culture intersects with many different aspects of nerd and hobby culture. buuuut... i would argue that there's also a big difference in vibes and attitudes between your average car meet and a room full of furries, right? i think people jump to the idea that things that are heavily furry themed (or mlp-themed, or sci fi themed, etc) are so for no good reason, but I think the reality is that these kind of events allow people to engage with hobbies they might not otherwise or where they might otherwise have to tone themselves down, as the general community or perceived vibe feels unwelcoming to them for whatever reasons. additionally something something statistics on the numbers of queer and neurodiverse furries compared to the general population. makes it insane to me that 'alt furries' and the like ever existed at all.
@zzoinks13 күн бұрын
It can certainly be a safe space, at a furry event. So it's pretty much like a car meet like you said but you're less likely to experience discrimination and discomfort interacting with a possible or actual bigot. And there are surely exceptions to the rule but it's probably more of a safe-space atmosphere for people interested in cars. Like how the Street Animals brand and community advertises itself to be. I'm just guessing because I've never gone to one. Plus there are plenty of good people at a regular car meet, it's just the fear of discrimination that I imagine can come to marginalized attendees like lgbtq+. Bigots probably won't come to a furry event. Probably why a lot of furry stickers have them holding an LGBT flag or similar and personas have LGBT colors. Kinda to say I'm okay with who I am and if you're absolutely not okay with it then this sticker might keep you away.
@zzoinks13 күн бұрын
I feel like sometimes the alt furs are like people who grew up in that discriminatory household, religion, or community and may be part of such discriminated against group. And admitting they are is tough so they try to hide from it by being publicly against it. Just assumptions but "Spector da wolf" shed some insight on how he used to hang out with the alt people

Honestly, if I were to spend $10k on a fursuit, I'd probably be able to say that it cost more than all of my registered cars, combined. Not counting parts cars, I've owned 10 cars. Only 2 of them have cost more than $1k. Edit: I did the math, and including parts cars and failed projects, Im not even up to $7,500. Over 17 cars. (Well 16.5, as one of the parts cars was split with a friend.)

I never thought about being drawn to unusual, but ordinary vehicles. But thats me to the letter. My 2012 Outback is the 2.5 6MT. Which is such an unusual option, even many subaru folks didnt know the 4th gen had a six speed as an option. Its a blast to drive too. Not fast, but sending it in a wagon fun! My 1992 F150 has the 300 six paired to a heavy duty T18 4 speed. By that era, if you bothered to get a manual, the 5 speed was more common, so someone had to special order the T18. I dont see many obs trucks like that.
@zzoinks13 күн бұрын
Why would somebody order the t18? Is it more durable?
@Demache9212 күн бұрын
@zzoinks Yes, by a long shot. It's a 60s era cast iron transmission. The Mazda 5 speed was better for speed and fuel economy, but it didn't tolerate heavy work like the T18 could. It had a real low 1st and direct drive 4th. It was also used in the heavier duty F series trucks so it could handle anything you threw at an F150.

So the significance of this to ‘normies’ is furry car culture arises out of having a crafted lifestyle, through crafting a character, crafting a suit, and crafting a car that is appropriate to their personality even if they could have something different, a conscious rejection of the mainstream but for the most part a welcoming attitude to those interested in crossing over to check out the entertainment generally on offer. Many furries are entertainers, creating a kind of performance art for entertaining mostly each other - childish adults, but NOT children (unless it is an event specifically for children) - and the hobby is shared by getting into character. That imagination shows up in a furry’s other hobbies as well.
