I work as an aged care RN and it is so rewarding. I plan to do my masters in gerontology then go on to become a nurse practitioner but will continue working my shifts as I will never leave my residents, I love them too much and have such a connection with them.

Peace be to you! This was VERY well-presented. I have a keen interest in Gerontology. I wish more health care professionals pursued it.

the older population is growing. we do not realize that the growing medical needs for the older population are becoming more and more pronounced. A large number of doctors do not specialize in the older population. The medical field does struggle with what the older person needs. for example, not recognizing confusion of the elder person can mean a urinary tract infection. increased falls can mean fluid on the brain and the person may need a cat-scan or MRI, some doctors just say falling is part of the aging process. The older population will need help with understanding medical insurance coverage or understanding their prescription plan. All medical coverage changes at an older age and can be very confusing.

in Canada, the older people are usually healthy looking and living with a chronic disease, I see more people in their 90's than ever. There are more older people than younger people, it gets me curious as to why ?

oh .. my .. god .. So if we are getting better care and living better and longer, does this mean we stay young longer and get "old " at older ages?

It's possible to be healthy in some sense while aging, just like you can be healthy with worsening psoriasis. But like psoriasis and other diseases, aging is pathology of the cells or body processes which, if not controlled well enough (and so far the ways to do this are in experimental stages) eventually leads to death, so aging is terminal. No one can intelligently say that's healthy. We need to get aging under medical control. Search Aubrey de Grey, Bill Andrews, Bill Faloon, Janni Lloyd, transhumanist, technology or science political parties.

To me, it is irresponsible to obsess over how we can make humans live longer and longer, without a thought for how we might extract resources from them.
