Discount stores we know and love, such as T.J. Maxx, Marshall's, and Homegoods, have sadly taken a turn for the worse... In today's video, I rant about the newest shenanigans that may be happening at your local store... Say hello to my most recent nightmare: Live "personal" shopping!

This whole concept makes absolutely ZERO sense to me. If I'm shopping in store, I'd prefer to do it myself. On my time, touch with my hands, control my own cart lol & select different sections when & how I'd like. If I didn't have a car, I'd pay an Uber rather than a finders fee. & if a certain store isn't in my area I'm going to shop online. I'm not understanding this at all. & im never up to date on whatevers trending so I Def wouldn't have the patience to wait for the woman to move on. Is this hurting or helping business? I definitely agree that they're making things out of reach for everyone & that's a problem but also, I have to side eye anyone that's partaking. Just why?

@@jacquelinem9278For me, it depends. There are some kinds of personal shopping that are done through an employee at the store, as a service to customers, usually free, although possibly with a minimum purchase amount. Curbside pick-up or at some of the American Girl doll stores, they have personal shoppers who help customers pick out items. Some collectors want the doll they’re getting to be looked over first, if they are having it shipped to them (I, myself, don’t generally care about small flaws in my dolls as long as everything works correctly-no limbs coming off, eyes open and close, etc.). I don’t think people who buy an item and resell at a decent price, such as on Ebay or Mercari are a problem, so long as they’re being reasonable. I don’t care for the resellers who buy up a ton of the same stock and try to resell for a much higher price on the secondary market. I’ve seen this happen with Squishmallows and with American Girl items. I know American Girl has had to crack down on some of their limited edition items with placing limits per item as well as possibly no returns, partially due to resellers a few years ago buying up tons of stock on certain items, then not being able to sell them all on the secondary market and trying to then return them to AG and get their money back. Some stores that sell Squishmallows have had to also put up limits on how many someone can buy at times, due to resellers trying to buy so many and resell much higher. I don’t think what the so-called “personal shoppers” were doing in the stores is fair, what with saying “there’s only four of this item” wanting to sell all of them. Someone else who is shopping in the store for themselves or loved ones (as gifts) should be able to buy one or two of that item themselves.

You're missing out! Thrift stores are the super score spot for broke college students, and single moms like me. I clothe all three of my kids and myself almost exclusively in thrift store purchases... for pennies on the dollar. When I buy a cart worth of clothing, which is basically one season's worth of clothes for my family, I will spend $100-200 and everyone has what they NEED. I couldn't even get one outfit for each of us at the mall nowadays, for that amount of money. Walmart clothing is crap. So is most Target and other less expensive store clothing. Thrift stores are where you can consistently find good quality gently used clothing that won't break the bank and also that you don't care so much if it gets stained, or a hole, or lost etc. been thrifting my whole life, and I'm 47. Waaaaay better than TJ Maxx!!

@@antoBN it absolutely does, I’ve used several payment processors including PayPal for over 5 years for my small business. PayPal is notorious for holding your money up to 21 days even if you ship the item promptly, when it comes to goods and services. With friends & family, the money is available right away. When it comes to personal shoppers, most of them are not willing to take that risk of buying a bunch of items for someone with their own money and have the buyer request a refund from PayPal after they’ve already paid for the items at the store. A lot of these shoppers have built a loyal following who have gotten packages successfully delivered to them time and time again so they feel comfortable sending money through friends & family. & to assume taxes aren’t done properly just because of this is silly, PayPal and all payment processors report any income & payments coming in to the IRS past $600 regardless so it’s not a tax evasion thing it’s exactly what I’ve explained

The fact that Goodwill still qualifies as a non-profit should be considered illegal. The higher ups pocket cash while the worker bees get paid minimum wage. The only thing good they provide for a community is that they hire people that other stores won't hire, but those people still need and will contribute to the tax revenue of the state. @@WhatsOnMyShelf Goodwill regions are independent of each other. For example Goodwill of Northern New England has nothing to do with what happens in say Arizona at Goodwill. Goodwill actually uses the money they make in store to fund their community service programs; like residential and day programs for people with Developmental Disabilities, Workforce Services programs (this has nothing to with hiring at Goodwill - it’s career services and training programs to help get people into jobs and create stability), Neurorehab programs for people with brain injuries, free tax prep services, etc. Unfortunately, when one regional Goodwill program does something bad, it is assumed that it’s the same for all Goodwills despite being only connected by branding and process (sell donated items to fund community service programs) Source: I am a previous HR Recruiter for Goodwill, that was also responsible for job descriptions and selecting pay scales for 400+ job titles from custodian to Neuroscience) Our Executive Director gave up her high paying job at Boeing to make less than 6 figures. Goodwill’s EComm program (eBay, etc) is very successful and again that money stays local to the Goodwill regional org that lists the item. It can make it difficult to find those really good finds that used to be on the shelf, but the more money made, the more programs receive to offer services. Someone's getting the items and two more people (this woman and her husband) are making a livable wage, unlike many of the non self employed jobs that are available to them in the US. You can say that they're "cleaning out" all the low cost stuff, but then everything they're grabbing aren't actually necessities for low income or any kind of income households (Grinch ramen bowls, hello kitty mugs, candles shaped like xmas trees, makeup etc....) It just seems like some of you are only stressed because you dont have the guts to do this, but secretly really want to, and/or you're jealous...

They literally ruin everything! There’s a clothing brand called Kate Quinn that’s pretty popular, really unique prints, mostly baby/kids/women’s clothes and my daughters wardrobe is mostly this brand. I live right near their headquarters. Mostly they sell on their website but they opened an outlet store within the last year or so and it’s such a nightmare going there because I’m always the only actual customer and everyone else is live-streaming on Facebook doing “personal shopping.” It’s the only outlet store they have so people in other states will pay an arm and a leg to get desirable prints that they might’ve missed when the collection dropped. I followed some of the personal shopping pages out of curiosity and they’ll take bids on really popular items, I saw dresses that were maybe $12 originally selling for $45 and then the buyer still pays a finders fee and shipping! It’s insane and makes it miserable for anyone who is actually shopping for themselves or their kids.

The whole point of these stores not selling online is to keep prices low and to have the shopper make the effort to purchase in person. Sure it looks like a great way to make money but eventually the stores will close due to less foot traffic and everyone loses.

Literally in the afternoon when people who had real jobs that didn't let them be at the door at 5am were on lunch an anxious to get one cup for themselves they'd been waiting for, the cups were already gone. I don't really care either way of this debate, but your comment feels kind of classist. If personal shoppers can exist in fancy stores then this kind of "grift/hustle" (in your words) should be fine for lower income people to use too. Either it's all okay or none of it is. Again, I don't really care either way, my only real opinion is that the friends and family payment option is dodgy.

I am SO glad I stumbled across your channel! The older I get, the more insanity I see with social media...especially TikTok. And this whole reseller thing now...argh!! This makes me think of concert tickets nowadays and how resellers will just go in as soon as tickets go on sale, buy almost all the available tickets, and then resell them for astronomical prices! These ''personal shoppers'' are ridiculous. Are they writing in the money they're ripping off of people to their taxes? Or is this all under the table? That bothers me so much. Also, I get that the people purchasing things from these ''personal shoppers'' are doing it willingly...BUT the resellers have to know that they are ripping people off with those bogus extra fees. I'm willing to bet some of the people buying from these tiktokkers are people who physically cannot get to a TJMaxx/Marshalls/etc due to health issues/physical disabilities/etc. If you want to be a real personal shopper then go find someone who needs you to shop for them, do a FaceTime call with them while you're in the store, buy for them what they want, have them pay you back afterward, and then deliver the items to them yourself since they should ideally be within a reasonable driving distance from you. But noooo...these people just want to scam people and charge them way more for items than they really are worth. Pretty morally reprehensible if you ask me!

(Employees should be able to buy items they like as well even if they are hot on the market) well i pick up a couple other hello kitty finds and am checking out with one of the employees i saw involved. I asked her if they had anymore. Her response was “No, this lady called to have them set aside for her to buy. Shes a reseller and makes like $600 a week on reselling all the hello kitty items.” Me 😮 what… and you guys let them, and also allow them to CALL to have then be set aside and Knowing they do this. I feel like these stores should have limits/quantities per customer because this is just ridiculous. Its sooo rude! I just want something for me, not to resell. @@Kharizmahwhen paying through paypal, you can either choose “friends and family” or “goods or services”. The latter is used when being paid for offering a service or selling an item. It’s taxed by paypal, and it’s protected if the seller does not give you what you paid for. The former, however, is used for sending money between friends or family, and is *not* taxed, nor protected. What this person is doing by making them pay with “friends or family”, is both skipping out on being taxed by paypal, and making it so that the buyer has no protection whatsoever if she doesn’t actually send them what they bought.

I currently work at TJ Maxx and have worked at Marshalls previously. The employee discount is only 10% and on select weekends throughout the year its a 20% discount. Still very crazy to me that people do this. I think the employees who are “personal shoppers” would get in trouble if found out. Ruining the search/fun for actual shoppers . Weird behavior

In german stores (They are calles TKMaxx) they are kicking people out who are abusing the '10%' personal discounts...They only belong to the person buying. AND!! They aren't allowed to resell. I dont get why America isn't keeping it up. You can see, who is abusing it anyways... I just dont get your weak policies.

10% off is a rip. Especially since I doubt these stores are paying well and giving decent benefits… if any.

I agree streaming while at the store is not good, and must be stopped but everything else you mentioned is out of our control.
