Part of the thing about the video and this is true of many early 80's videos, was that it was the MTV era, and often a song needed a good video to really do well, it wasn't enough for just the song to be good, the video had to be good too, or eye catching or something. So a lot of bands back then would make fairly odd videos that had next to nothing to do with the song because it helped get more air time on MTV.

A little background here. The legendary line up of Yes was prevalent in the 60s and 70s. That's the band the hardcore yes fans are referring to. The 80s pop music oriented version (that some people like myself remember hearing on the radio as kids and actually like) is not necessarily the old school yes fans favorite.
@Lionize728
@Lionize728 9 ай бұрын
If Trevor had named the band Cinema like he wanted to there would be little comparison between the two bands. Then old school Yes fans would get the genius of the LP instead of coming off like curmudgeons. Rabin's version turned millions of new fans on to the back catalog of Yes so they should be thankful. Prior to 90125 Yes was dead , buried and relegated to dinosaur band status. All the members had walked away from the band and they certainly weren't going to get many new listeners. And all those old school Yes faithful, for all their proclaimed devotion, had stopped buying their albums. If they loved them so much maybe they should have done a better job of supporting them.

Go to Yessongs from 1973 for a lot of their classics And you and i, , Heart of the sunrise, Roundabout, I get up i get down, Yours is no disgrace , Starship trooper. After this 80s phase Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe released a record by that name, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe were out for some of the 80s stuff. then in the 90s they came back with Union with Squire , White and Rabin

Yes are an English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968. The band has undergone numerous line-up changes throughout its history, up to nineteen musicians have been full-time members. They have had a lot of great songs such as "Roundabout", "Starship Trooper", "Going For The One", "Masquerade", "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Heart Of The Sunrise", "The Gates Of Delirium", "And You & I", "Close To The Edge" etc. Sadly drummer Alan White passed away recently.

Yes is one of the best bands ever. They are a progressive rock band who did a couple of more mainstream albums in the 80s, This song is from that era. They've been together since 1968 and are still active. Their progressive stuff is the best and their musicianship is unparalleled. 3 of their members are recognized virtuosos, being total masters of their instruments: Steve Howe, guitar; Chris Squire, bass and Rick Wakeman, keyboards. Roundabout is a good song to check out but their entire catalogue is excellent - if you enjoy progressive rock. Thanks for posting this one.

@@markhodge7 Personally, I feel that Rick Wakeman had no peer when it came to keyboards and synthesizers. Journey to the Center of the Earth was one of my favorite albums back then. I also enjoyed Emerson, Lake and Palmer very much. You just don't or hear anything like that today, even though any high-quality laptop with the right programs could duplicate those amazing tones. I saw Yellow Moon Orchestra at the Greek Theater in 1979 and their synthesizer was the size of a double-door refrigerator. When they had a reunion concert in 2019, I believe, a laptop had replaced the Moog. But they sounded exactly the same 40 years later.

Roundabout from there earlier era just blows this completely out of the water but this is still good. Early stuff is shorter, Roundabout, Yours is no disgrace, Sound Chaser, Close to the Edge - the muscianship is astounding, takes it to an almost spiritual level, it may actually take a few listens to get into them, its complex music and at the time it was mindlowing -

"90125", the album this comes from, is one of the quintessential LP's of the 80's. This song went to #1 in Jan of '84 . 6 of the LP's 9 tracks received extensive FM airplay with three of those becoming hit singles. ("Leave It" had 18 videos versions which all appeared on MTV.) "Cinema" is also on this album. Since this is the first song on it maybe you could do the whole album?

I am listening to Yes almost as long as to the Beatles. For 40 years. And they come shortly after the Beatles in my opinion. Really a great band. Your next Yes song should be: Awaken. Owner of a lonely heart is from the early 1980s. I was at the concert in 1983 when the album was presented. Yes, Yes had a slightly different sound and shorter songs in the 80s, but later returned to the old tradition of progressive with long songs. In my opinion, their best period is between 1970 and 1978. Everything from this period is first quality.

The way I interpret the '2nd take' of the clip: All those animals have a _symbolic_ meaning, matching the character of the people (or villains rather) who try to stop the main guy from being his own true self. And when they finally close in on him, he's taking a leap of faith - but instead of crashing to the ground, he soars like an eagle instead (again an analogy to life), and now he's finally found the courage to go against the stream (as seen at the end of the clip). And the lyrics match those messages perfectly, too! 😉👍

This song came out when I was in high school. In chemistry class we got into a real debate about the meaning of this song, is it better to have loved and been hurt by it or to have never been loved and feel alone? Since the science teacher was only three or four years older than most of us, she gave her two cents from her experiences. Lousy chemistry teacher, but was pretty cute.

My suggestion is for you to ease into Yes. Listen to "Roundabout", then "And You and I". Once you have a feel for them, do "Close To the Edge" and "Siberian Khatru". If you do the latter first, you will be very confused and not get them. I've seen Yes 5 times over the years and they never disappoint! "Owner of a Lonely Heart" isn't really representative of their work as a whole. Earlier work has lots of keyboards done by the incomparable Rick Wakeman. Dive in!

I didn't really care for Yes until Trevor Rabin joined. His 1989 solo album Can't Look Away is a great album with several different music directions. Very well produced. Most everyone has heard his music without knowing it as he does movie scores, and for some major productions. I remember when this song aired on Mtv, and this is like an extended version of the video. The original started with the guy walking in black and white after the shapeshifting. In the 1980's the video didn't always have anything to do with the song. Videographers wanted to make their stamp for awards and such. Most of the time the band didn't even know what the video was about until it was finished. I always preferred live concert footage.

Fun fact: Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn of the Buggles joined Yes for the Drama album. Die hard Yes fans didn't accept them. Geoff Downes went on to form Asia with Steve Howe (Yes), John Wetton (King Crimson/UK) and Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake and Palmer. Trevor Rabin was considered for the band. There is a demo on KZbin with him singing what would be Asia's second major hit, Only Time Will Tell, with John Wetton singing backing vocals. They decided to keep Asia a 4 piece. Rabin joined Chris Squire to form Cinema with Trevor Horn producing. Trevor Horn realized Rabin couldn't front a band and they asked Jon Anderson to return. Thus the Yes 90125 album was born. I do find it interesting that the structure of Asia's Heat of the Moment and Yes's Owner of a Lonely Heart are similar and both use power chords in the verse.

Video killed the radio star applies here. If one just listens to the song it has nothing in common with its vid. Which falls in line with Jon Andersons use of words and voice to be used as instruments. Been dancing to Roundabout for 52yrs so please always do the album versions first, its what the band envisioned. 🙏🍁

My guess for the Grammy was Leave It and was quite surprised by it being Cinema. Cinema is just before Leave It and flows nicely into it. IMO they have to be done together. Of course, Close To The Edge is a must.

I went to highschool in the 80s and watched MTV a lot and I've never seen this version where it starts off with the band then stops all of a sudden and continues. MTV only played the “story line” version.

What I gathered from the video and the song is that it's all about free will and choice. My thought is that the band feels that it's better and safer to choose to have a lonely heart that has never been broken as opposed to giving yourself over to someone else, only for them to break your heart. The imagery from the video is that the everyman decided to give himself to the authorities but unconsciously, he didn't want to submit. He fought and fought until his only safe place was the jump off the building, thus retaining his free will again. That's why I think he turned against the crowd in the end and walked his own path.

Life is growing up, marriage, kids, work till you die in a system that others designed for you. Reference to insects, reptiles and black cat is the evil, as in the bible. The factory, heat and flames with the strong guy that commands you and starts fighting you, is the devil himself in the hell on earth. Take the stairs to the roof is setting yourself free and liberating yourself. Giving your heart to someone else, something evil or the devil himself results in a broken heart. Choosing freedom, like being a bird, flying above the landscape maybe lonely but you are true to yourself and not corrupted. The choice is yours: "Owner of a lonely heart or owner of a broken heart", do you want to sell your soul to the devil? Never give your heart away, you need it to love yourself.

Wanted to make a comment about Ode to Billie Joe. It was a very popular song in my teenage years. The story was at that time, about her having an abortion, and the two of them throwing it off the bridge. He couldn't deal with his sorrow, and jumped off himself to join his dead baby. She threw flowers off to acknowledge her sorrow. Remember at dinner when her mother said, she hadn't eaten anything? A clear indication that she was very upset, but couldn't reveal why. Remember, this was the South, and abortion was strictly forbidden. (Watch the movie Dirty Dancing, to see a quick synopsis of abortion difficulty during that time) That's a great movie, by the way) Hope you find this !!❤

I couldn't stand all that so I just fast forwarded it. My greatest memory of this song was when I saw them live, it was the Yes In the Round tour. The band was on a circular stage and slowly revolved around. One of my top 10 concerts.

Yes is a musicians' band... their catalog of music since 1969 has always been complex and challenging music from epic tracks to lush soundscapes... They were a huge influence on bands like Rush, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, etc. However, they also endured a lot of line-up changes. Yes today has no original members... Formed in the UK in the 1960's, Yes debuted as a jam band in 1969 w/ Jon Anderson (vocals), Chris Squire (bass) and Bill Bruford (drums)...but it wasn't until the early 70's when Steve Howe (guitar) and Rick Wakeman (organ/ keyboards) joined when Yes took off... in 1971 w/ the 4th album 'Fragile' selling 2x platinum w/ the single 'Roundabout' becoming a hit... Yes became more experimental w/ the 5th album 'Close to the edge' in 1972... Bill Bruford was replaced by Alan White (drums) for their iconic live album 'Yessongs' in 1973. Yes scored a number of gold records in the 70's, like - 'Going for the one' (1977)... 'Tormato' (1978)... However, creative differences led to Yes breaking up by 1981. In 1983, Chris Squire (bass), Alan White (drums) and Jon Anderson (vocals) reformed Yes w/ Trevor Rabin (guitar) and original keyboardist Tony Kaye... their '83 album '90125' was a huge hit selling 3x platinum w/ the single 'Owner of a lonely heart' and winning a Grammy w/ the track 'Cinema'... It gave Yes another successful decade of a career w/ albums like 'Big Generator' (1987) and 'Union' (1991)... but the band faced decline in the 90's after the 'Talk' album in 1994. However, Yes fans were treated to a full reunion of the 70's Yes line-up w/ Steve Howe (guitar) and Rick Wakeman (keyboards) returning for 2 albums in 1996/ '97 - 'Keys to ascension' (1 & 2) w/ live tracks.... However, Rick Wakeman left the band once again by '97. Yes carried on recording & toruing in the 2000's w/ Geoff Downes (keyboards) joining the band after 2000... Jon Anderson (vocals) left the band and was eventually replaced by Jon Davison (vocals) by 2011... Sadly, bassist Chris Squire passed away in 2015. Drummer Alan White stepped down from touring and passed away in 2022. Yes released their latest album in 2023 - 'Mirror to the sky'... which charted well all over the world. The band hired Billy Sherwood (bass) and Jay Schellen (drums) Other Yes classics - 'Siberian Khatru' ... 'Close to the Edge' ... 'Hold on' ... 'America'...

Yes actually have very few line-up changes for a group that started in the early-to-mid 1960's. However, in later years there was so much arguing over ownership of the name & an eventual split into two separate acts. The "classic" (not original) line-up for Yes was Jon Anderson (lead vocals and some guitar), Chris Squire (Bass, vocals & some guitar), Steve Howe (guitars and vocals), Rick Wakeman (Keyboards) and Alan White (Drums). This particular LP was by a band originally called "Cinema" and included in it's membership Chris Squire and Bill Bruford (both original members of Yes). As they reached out to get some additional help, the band turned to other Yes members for help and it was only natural to change the name to "Yes"; but became kind of an attempt to take over the Yes name, but musically, the lack of guitar master Steve Howe was painfully obvious. This LP gave a whole new generation of fans to Yes, making them clearly the most popular of the so-called prog-rock bands. I would say that the band's sound changed 2 or 3 times but Yes was always the classic rock standard. I could never choose a single band to listen to, but I would never argue if Yes was all that I had in my record collection. This song and "Roundabout" were chosen by the band to play for the HOF introduction so it would make sense to begin with those two songs on your journey.

This is from the album when Yes changed their lineup for a while and went more mainstream/commercial. The music on this is excellent, but most yes fans would say the 70's music from 71' starting with The Yes Album to Going For The One in 77' is their best or most consistent stuff, so I suggest starting off with Roundabout. The video is silly and has nothing to do with the music, the band didnt have input into the video, it was the 80's...

You really should have reviewed the early songs with the great Steve Howe on lead guitar and the ureal Rick Wakeman on keyboards. I remember seeing Wakeman playing 3 synth keyboards during a song then switching to a classical piece on the piano. Simply anazing progressive rock.
