I wonder why gouache isnt so popular as watercolor, acrylic and oil paints? like i've recently just seen this in art stores but I really want to try it, I like the idea of acrylic and watercolor mashed together, it might be the perfect medium for me!

The funny thing is that here in Brazil (at least in my state) we can find gouache super easily. It was the first medium I've known, followed by watercolor. You can find it at any stationary store and even at supermarkets. As a kid at school it was requested to the parents to send some gouache and at least once a week we would play with it. It was great because it was easy to clean and cheap.

Very good explanation for someone who's trying to learn about different mediums. Nicely done! Gouache was very popular among illustrators back in the 1940's and 50's. Since then, other mediums have put gouache on the back burner, but it's still a wonderful way to work!

I started painting recently, mainly because I wanted to paint my favorite drawings and sketching that have piled up over the years. So basically I'm still a toddler when it comes to paint and am still trying things out. I'm not a big fan of acrylic and water paint is a nightmare for me, it's hard to controle keeps smudging every time I set it to dry. So for someone like me gouache is heavensent the perfect mix of the two.

You can also get cheap acrylic craft paint and use it like gouache or watercolor by watering it down. Apple Barrel at Wal Mart is 50 cents for a 2 oz.bottle and comes in a million colors. Of course it's no good for high grade fancy art but it's fun to play with😄

But it is closely related to watercolor because they both use the same binder: gum arabic. Acrylic paint is a plastic polymer binder. Watercolor and gouache are also both water soluble after they dry. Acrylic is permanent. You cannon re-wet it as you can gouache. It may have behavioral similarities to acrylic, but it is an entirely different paint.

Tim Hodge Acryla gouache also exists, it behaves more like acrylic paint - so I'm guessing those paints use other binders?

I use Gouache thinned out to use with my Calligraphy scripts from the many different Gothic scripts all the way to the 19th century Spencerian Script and Offhand Flourishing. I do like using Iron Gall Inks but Gouache gives me the option of adding any combination of colors or blended with in the script I am writing in. You do need to then it out to about the consistency of whole milk or maybe a little thinner but it works great. So Calligraphers, Try your hand at Gouache and you just might be pleasantly surprised!

I went to art classes when I was a kid and interesting enough, I wasn't introduced to oil at all and barely had a chance to explore acrylic. We used gouache mostly. When I came to the U.S. I had hard time finding gouache in the art store but saw oil and acrylic paints everywhere. Part of my difficulty could be caused by language barrier yet despite that, I'm just surprised to find that gouache is so much less popular here.

Gouache has ALOT more pure pigment than watercolor or acrylic, which is why good gouache costs so much money. Its creamy texture is because it is pretty much finely powdered pigment with very little additive. Also, it is never fixed like acrylic. You can work on a gouache painting forever, because once your wet brush is applied, the area is again active. You can't do that at all with an acrylic or as easily with watercolor. Gouache is luxurious and beautiful, and needs more protection once your work is finished.

Make Gouache too thin and it dries a lot lighter and coverage decreases. Apply Gouache too thick and it cracks. In "The Range" UK Winsor Newton 10 tubes starter pack is about £14.00. Daler Rowney 24 pack of Gouache is £10. "The Range also has a website for mail order.

I've got a question . This sounds like " poster colour " most famous in my country made by a brand called Buncho . Is it ? It's cheap , water soluble , very opaque but you can lighten it with water . But in my country , it's like the first kind of paint students learn to use . Someone please answer. Are gouache and poster colour the same just that their called differently by this big brand in my country ?
@fatimahzm
@fatimahzm 5 жыл бұрын
They're similar but not the same. While both are opaque water soluble paint, poster colours have bigger pigments compared to gouache, making it easier to reactivate and not stain the paper as much. From experiences, poster colours are a bit more opaque and sometimes more grainy depending on the quality.

This guy keeps saying you “can use gouache more like traditional paint”, and to him acrylics is “traditional paint”. Gouache is the oldest painting medium in the world, literally what was used in cave paintings and ancient Egyptian tombs. Tempera paint is also gouache only they use eggs as binder. Closest to gouache is neither translucent water color (aquarelle) or acrylic, but oil color. Oil color is like gouache except the binder is oils, so you could say oil color is like gouache that dries really slowly so you have plenty of time to play with wet colors and blend. Of course, oils also create a much thinner and more flexible film so that you can use more layers than with gouache. Gouache/Tempera = traditional paint that is usually very opaque. Water color = very transparent which means you build from light to dark. Oil colors = like gouache but with longer drying time plus you control how opaque or transparent you want it to be. Acrylics = like a mix of all of the above but struggles with being as opaque as oil or gouache unless you use thick undiluted paint.
