What Is Grammatical Gender? (1/3 of the Series on Gender)

WHAT IS GRAMMATICAL GENDER IN CZECH?
👉 it's a way of categorizing nouns
👉 there are three genders in Czech: masculine, feminine, and neuter
👉 the masculine gender is further divided into masculine animate (for people and animals) and masculine inanimate (for objects or abstract words)
👉 we need to learn the gender of all nouns because it influences the form of other words in the sentence
👉 when talking about people, you can follow their natural gender to determine their grammatical gender
👉 with other nouns, you need to memorize the gender
👉 often, gender can be determined by looking at the noun's ending

Using of wrong gender can lead to 'funny' misunderstandings. 'To je milÁ paní = It's a nice lady.' But... 'To je milÉ (neutral ending) paní = It belongs to nice lady.' And in extreme: 'To je milÉ, paní... = That's nice, lady.'
