I think it's important to note that several states in the US have more than one nickname. Case and point, I live in the State of Montana, and Montana's most well-known nickname is Big Sky Country, but Montana is also known by the nickname of the Stubtoe State. So, while you are going into the history of how states in the US got their names and nicknames, please be aware there might be a few more nicknames for some states than others. And chances are each state might have a minimum of 2 or 3 nicknames, as opposed to the thought that each state only has 1 nickname moving forward.

Fun fact, in the series Ben 10, Ben's cousin he spends most of the series with, along with Grandpa Max, is named Gwen. It is later revealed her full first name is Gwendalyn. In the original Ben 10, and its follow-ups (Alien Force, Ulitmate Alien, and Omniforce), Gwen is often to be the planner and a problem solver who enjoys challenging puzzles, but at the same time, she later discovers she has a talent for what is first presented as magic but later revealed to an inherited ability to manipulate life energies from her grandmother, Verdona. Ben on the other hand is also shown to be pretty smart, but he's more of an in-the-moment, hands-on, type of problem solver. And it's often shown that when the two actually do manage to work together, they were very much the type to quarrel with each other more often than not in the original series, then things got done way better than either anticipated. Their grandfather Max's full first name is Maxwell.

My sister's name is Gwenda. Named after my father's sister. My father is from Kent, and his father is Welsh, so the connection there is obvious. She always goes by Gwenda, and is often frustrated as people always think that her name is Gwen or Gwendolyn, as those forms of the name are far more common here in the US.

So glad you mentioned my name, I didn’t know it was originally a Cornish form though, as soon as you explained the meaning of Gwen, I knew it was the same name because it has the same meaning. The biggest surprise was Genevieve, I was told all my life (by (originally English) family friends who lived in France, that it was my french name; but as you say, it has a different meaning altogether! Over the years, I’ve learned so much from your videos Patrick, thank you. I’m going to increase my patronage a little, I wish it could be more. Good luck getting to the magical number, you deserve it for all your hard work!

4:51 Gwenhwyfar has three syllables, and can be approximated as Gwen-HOY-var - it's the Welsh form of Guinevere. Also Gwenfron = gwenvron. For future ref, the single letter "f" is the Welsh equivalent of "v"... it's always pronounced like the "f" in "of", not as in "off". Welsh uses "ff" for the latter sound.
@noelleggett53683 жыл бұрын
Patrick! Gwenhwyfar, (pronounced gwen-HOOY-var), is actually ‘Guinevere’ spelt in Welsh. (Guinevere is the Anglo-French spelling of the Welsh name). Gwen (fair, pure, white) + Hwyfar (spirit); It means “pure/fair spirit”. It has nothing to do with Mary, which in Welsh is “Mair” (pronounced like “mire”), often found in its ‘softened’ form “Fair” (pronounced like “vire”). Llanfair means (St) Mary’s church.

Because you mentioned the "extra Y" in Gweyn, it also reminded me of one of my high school teachers who had a somewhat rare/unique name: Bronwyn. To the ear, it also dances a bit with some of the "Gwen" variants. Looking at the etymology now, I see "-yn" is often just a feminizing suffix. Still, when you mentioned "Gwenfron" it also reminded me of when I looked up "Brownyn" as a teenager and -- having a crush on said teacher who was fairly well endowed -- the etymology was "pale/fair breasted". Teenage (yet shy) hormones couldn't get that mental image out for the remainder of middle school.

As for Gwens in videogames, there was a little girl named Gwen in Guild Wars. She followed you around in the early game and acquired a sort of creepy/mythological status sparking lots of theories among players. Eventually, Arena.net published a full expansion named Eye of the North, shortened GW:EN, where she came back as a companion and was much more developed as a character. It was pretty cool how an anecdotal character eventually became someone relevant in the lore because of how it sparked the imagination of the playerbase.

There's Gwyn from Dark Souls and all of his children who are named similarly to names found in this video, except his first born son who's name is unkown. Gwyn is a man, but due to the themes of the game of dark relating to humanity and light relating to godhood it makes sense that he'd be named Gwyn since he is the King of the gods in a very zeus or odin like fashion.

GWYNETH is the feminine form of GWYNEDD. TH pronounced as TH in THOR. DD pronounced as TH in THE or THEN. Dd and Th are single sound letters in the Welsh language Dd follows D and Th follows Th the Cornish equivalent are DH and Z or Zh. GWYNEDD etymology is derived from the Brythonic 'Weyndh' 'Forest People' later latinised to 'Venedotis' but later in Middle Welsh 'Guynet'. The Romans encountered the 'ORDOVICES' while invading the North and Mid Wales which was latinised form of 'GORDDWIG' meaning 'Hammer Tribe'

I have heard two of Gwen Stefani's songs: the first Sweet Escape which I hated, mostly thinkng that the "whoo-hoo, yee-hoo" was so freaking annoying but this is nothing compaired to the trash we hear on the mainstream radio, but I digress... In contrast, 4 in the Morning is the other song I heard and I really like that one. I recommend at least the former than the latter but maybe I'll give Sweet Escape another chance, maybe I opinion have changed for this, as well as listening to other songs she has done.
