This was so beautifully articulated! I have a “high” functioning daughter, and so many people comment how “you would never know” (as if it’s a compliment)?! A quote I really love is… “mild autism doesn’t mean they experience autism mildly. It just means you experience it mildly when with them. No one really knows how hard they have worked to get to where they are now” ♥️

I too have autism with no intellectual or communication deficits however I need a level 2 support. Yes I’m good at masking too. People don’t believe me when I tell them. But the daily struggle with health, mental well-being and social interactions are so very real. I also rely heavily on my husband who is also on the spectrum, and together we muddle through life. Life can be very hard and people’s ignorance can make it harder. So if you know someone who has been assessed with autism, please believe that it is true and be supportive.

I have sensory issues, I need a lot of routines and structure and burn out from every social context. I can compensate a lot because I'm intelligent but it makes me depressed beceause it drains all my energy. I'm definitely not high functioning, I'm HIGH COMPENSATING.

People regularly waste their time telling other what they are or aren't, including people's parents, siblings, other family members, physicians, teachers, therapists and many, many other who perceive themselves as "specialists" or even "experts". That's even more common from behind a keyboard where they can't be held accountable. Many people don't know what they don't know, and some of those people even have PhD's. Then you have way too many people who are all-or-nothing thinkers, not unlike some on the autistic spectrum, who believe their own subjective experience is the only experience possible. I'm more surprised when people don't behave that way, and quite pleasantly so.

@@PaperCraneOfHope hi! I noticed extreme anxiety when she was a baby. She wouldn't let anyone hold her or hardly touch her except me. Even my husband she would fuss with a lot. She was an early talker,at 15 months she was screened and they said she had the vocabulary of a 3 year old. She has a high IQ and would hyper focus on puzzles and having everything a specific way. (She was also diagnosed with OCD) she always would scream when the routine would change, for example bedtime,if we did something in the "wrong"order,it would be a huge meltdown. Many people in our lives thought she just needed more discipline but I knew there was something going on and I was persistent to get answers so I could get her the help she needed.she spoke well and early but she didn't speak to other people. She still struggles with that but doing better. She is also on medication for the OCD and that has helped. Other signs I saw, toe walking, not being able to regulate her emotions, many things had to be repeated the same, and she would repeat,if it got messed up she would start from the beginning. She also has very sensitive ears, sounds make her stressed and so do smells. People get offended by her bluntness sometimes because she will blurt out if something smells and it really does bother her so much she will cry sometimes.textures and clothing bother her,but she has gotten better with that as she got older (8years old now) As she has gotten older she has been able to handle some things a little better. She used to hide under tables in public if someone tried to look at her or talk to her or scream at them. Now she doesn't do that as much. She does try to run away if she gets triggered.she is also very literal. I saw all of this on her before she got diagnosed. I hope this helps and I hope you get answers!

This one made me cry. My biggest fear/anxiety is that my daughter is going to be "low functioning" and it's really helping me break that mindset. She's not verbal like you, BUT she is doing better in things like empathy and eye contact. Her sensory issues are pretty bad, but they don't seem much worse than what you're describing. It's hard, as a mom, to think my child won't be able to go to college, have a boyfriend, have a career, etc. which is everything that went through my mind with her diagnosis because, as you put it, people think Rain Man. These videos are really really helping me get out of a dark place and see what her future may actually be like.

I’m so glad all these videos could help you think of a brighter future for your daughter! She’s amazing and just because she can’t communicate like most doesn’t mean she can’t communicate. May be harder, may take longer, but with support she can do it.

If this gives you any hope, when my son was 9 months old, he was referred to early intervention because he was delayed and our reaching milestones. He did not begin speaking until he was 2 (more like 2.5) years old (besides mama & dada). At 18 months old, he was diagnosed with PDDNOS. My world was shattered. He even got dropped on his head at an afterschool program when he was 9 and had a traumatic brain injury and survived a subdermal hermatoma. This caused him to regress a little bit for a year or so, but it’s not over yet…… Fast forward 12 years, my son has been progressing, although not as fast as peers. The PDDNOS was ruled out when he was 6, and replaced with a diagnosis of apraxia of speech. He is still delayed in all areas, but with services, moving forward. Now, my son is almost 15 years old. Although communication is his weakness, he is in college level math and is a high honor straight A student. He flapped his hands when he ran when he was little, was extremely introverted and quiet and would run in circles. Best of all, he is the most kindest and genuinely sweet human I have ever met in my life. He is not arrogant or selfish at all. The progress we have seen over the past 13 years is living proof that those with “learning disabilities” can prevail and be successful thriving human beings and what may be a weakness to some is a strength to others. Many of these kids are “gifted” and have “exceptional” abilities in other areas they are passionate about….like my son is a math genius and I need to use a calculator!! I can speak publicly, and that is his weakness….we are all different. In time you will see that she will grow and progress and you will discover what her hidden abilities are ❤

In these terms I would be considered high functioning and my son would be considered low functioning. I don't like either label because it makes it seem like I'm just a touch autistic, so it's a bit dismissive and makes is seem that I don't need much support. For my son it makes people assume that since he is nonverbal and "low" functioning, he isn't going to amount to much and people pity me. Both are so not true! Up until my daughter's dx I was labelled an overly-anxious parent for suggesting she might be autistic. Up until the day before her dx I had actual Doctors telling me she couldn't be autistic because she could smile & give eye contact. I didn't dare mention that I might be autistic. Then when she got her diagnosis well-meaning folk were sorry for her & me but assured us it must be just a 'mild' case because she seems so 'normal'. Thankfully, school understood the level of my daughter's support needs & how I had to step in to be her Executive Function & how when she said 'Yes, I know what I'm supposed to do' she was still processing what she was told & actually had no idea what she was supposed to be doing. They began to see when she was masking & how her learning needed to be greatly adapted so she could retain what she was being taught. She's now in a special secondary school & just yesterday a neighbour was shocked & saddened to hear that was the case. I told them how great she is now doing with the help she needs but they seemed confused as to why she needed it because they thought "She was normal." I began to explain her sensory needs and her dyscalculia but just wrapped it up with a "I'm very proud of her," because I couldn't join in with this acquaintance's mourning. It left me feeling sad that my daughter was first overestimated & then underestimated in the space of five minutes. When I tell people about my autism, they tend to laugh it off. Believe me, once they get to know me & my idiosyncrasies they need no convincing LOL. Love your content. Your videos are a brilliant resource I can point people in the direction of.

@Rhonda Davis first i saw the psychologist who determined it was worth testing for. they interviewed myself and my wife. Then sent paperwork that had a ton of questions for me and family members. I also had to do a 350 question test. Like a personality type test. It's a common one for asd but I can't remember the name right now. They are still going over things and should hopefully hear something this week.

Since I can speak and write well, it is assumed that I'm just lazy and don't want to do my own paperwork. My mom is ashamed of my autistic childhood behavior and downplays it. I was just a late bloomer, she says... But, I'm 43 now, and I am so close to giving up. I have no friends, no one aside from my mom who can confirm that I don't have a job... Thank you for sharing these thoughts. I know as a teacher we sometimes are told about a student coming into our classroom that us new to us, and the term of description that may be used is "high functioning" - I know our administration never means it to invalidate any needs or persons, but usually is just a way to begin to communicate what we may be able to expect from that student. Of course we won't really know that until we get to know the student. It's been used more as a way to convey "hey this new student can probably hold their own in your class based on its content, but be alert for other needs your student may have" I really appreciate you clarifying what words convey, and I really love your channel - I have learned so much from you. God bless you, Olivia!!

@alxndramarie2 жыл бұрын
I see no one has replied to you so I figured I’d offer some thoughts. For starters, I am not diagnosed autistic but am currently working with a psychiatrist because I believe I am. I was diagnosed with ADHD early last year and believe I have both after seeing some of my issues not really covered in ADHD but rather in autism and vice versa. So some of my issues may be more ADHD but hopefully worth mentioning and considering for you and your son. I am 32 and have always lived with someone up until a few months ago when my partner and I separated. Living alone is extremely hard. One thing I’ve realized that has helped me stay “on track” often is body doubling. Knowing when to go to bed and get up, eat, shower, and even use the bathroom is easier when you see someone else doing it or needing it first. I didn’t know I had these issues as severely until I lived alone. You latch on to that behavior and the pressure from someone else can be needed. My time blindness makes me lose an entire day in a flash and I haven’t done anything at all or, I’ve hyper focused on something and haven’t eaten or done any house chores. I am currently so behind on house chores and my problems with organizing and prioritizing tasks makes it difficult to start things and I often get paralysis where I can’t get off the bed/couch/chair. And even when I do make good strides, completion rate is extremely low. Grocery shopping is way too overwhelming with the sensory overload of the store and then factoring in people and then to make decisions on what to eat and when and what I need and don’t need. I am exhausted all the time and can’t share simple responsibilities or tasks with anyone else and then they don’t get done. I almost always have dishes in the sink and it becomes a real problem because my sensory issues mean I can’t touch them or hear the sliminess of cleaning them and I’m faced with a physically and emotionally exhausting time to compete a simple stack of dishes or, to throw the dish/Tupperware away. My need to absorb myself in all my interests means I have over accumulated items that I really don’t “need” but I can’t get rid of them. My love of bridge burning or being a hermit means I’m left to my own devices and make poor decisions. The last point I’ll make even though I could make many more, is that my exhaustion levels are so intense that I cannot work full time and so my potential for income unless I run my own business is limited and rent is costly. To sum up a lot of it, what a neurotypical does would take me 3-10 fold the amount of time and I am only one person. Now, all that is to name a few of my struggles but I’d like to offer help. We are fortunate to continue to grow in technology and available services. In terms of planning for the future and what would help me would be taking advantage of services to make life easier. Having a meal delivery service would be helpful if I could afford it but for now I at least get my groceries delivered. I am trying to increase my income to afford to hire a house cleaner bi-weekly if possible to take that off my plate. Their 3 hours of cleaning would probably take me 3 weeks to accomplish. I have hue lightbulbs on every light so I can adjust the light levels and colors when needed and they don’t make a noise I can hear which other lightbulbs can do and it affects me. I am overhauling my apartment to better suit designated areas for various tasks and interests to hopefully help keep me in focus and organized. I have a dog and I have adapted to using the restroom when she needs to. She must know I need a push because she for whatever reason does not eat unless I am eating. My concern for her means I get food and we both eat. She also helps me with sleeping issues (time for bed and less anxiety at bedtime). She also needs meds and so we take ours at the same time. I really think pets or having a dependent can be helpful as they have their own schedule and somehow it’s easier to help someone with their needs than your own. I’m not sure Olivia’s needs that may limit her from living alone but what I can say is it’s extremely hard to do, but there are definitely options too. Hopefully there are some for your son that can help him if he eventually would like to live alone and if not, there are options for roommates or professionals! I recently saw some postings in my area for various jobs as basically a roommate for someone with autism that will also help with meals, meds, and accountability. I never heard this before but may be worth some research to see how that process works! Best of luck to you and your son and hopefully I was able to help a little. 🤍

I have been puzzling over why I fall (7 times last year) and I was slowly coming to the idea that I just drop from exhaustion. Your post makes me think maybe that’s true and gives me a new perspective on my issues. I have two dogs who expect me to follow a very strict schedule for feeding, walks, etc. and like you I think they really help me.

How about rephrasing the word “high or low” support need to specific support needs? This takes the whole measuring out of the game which seems to confuse more than help the person in need of support and leaves people to judge someone’s severity after their own measuring stick. I'm struggling with daily life from years, but I kept going and working on that. I often tell about my problems and my new way to handle it. People around me are seeing my strength, not my struggle. Unfortunately, they compare with me and put me in this spot of doing better than them. Just recently my new collegue with autism say that I'm doing great and he is sad that person with the same problems(he mean autism) is handling life and he isn't. I asked him why he thinks I'm doing great, I never said that. And he say: I can tell because I see that.

People just dropping out of my life for no reason that I could then see. I am 38 and have never moved out from my Mother! Never really thought to. The part at 6:30 really meant a lot to me. There's a huge difference between "being able to navigate and *appear* composed throughout a single day when a routine has been set in place and nothing is disrupted", and "being able to live completely independently by yourself". "Being able to live completely independently by yourself" inherently requires the ability to deal with unexpected changes in plans and situations, and being able to look after yourself without forgoing any basic needs... which is something that I often tell myself I can do, yet when it's put into _practice..._ it all falls apart pretty quickly as soon as one thing goes slightly wrong. So I think it's important to keep reminding ourselves that, like everyone else in the world, yes, we all have our strengths, but when we do come across our weaknesses and we can't deal with them all on our own, it sometimes takes more effort and bravery to allow others in to help us with them, than not saying anything at all and pretending that we're fine. I still struggle with it a lot, but hearing it from other people who are in similar situations is so uplifting- and this is coming from someone who doesn't usually feel that way about many things. Thank you :)

Great video and as a guy I relate very much to the iceberg metaphor. I have been praised for my ability to present my research but what people don't see is that I spend hours meticulously going over and rehearsing a 30 min presentation from start to finish if only to keep my anxiety at bay. I doubt anyone I know would say I was autistic but they also don't get to see the effort that goes into masking my autistic traits. I still remember being at a conference and being selected to give a 5 min presentation the next morning and the night before while most people were just partying and drinking I was in the hotel room spending actual hours rehearsing a 5 min talk I would give until I felt confident in it. I then woke up at 5 AM after barely getting 5 hrs of sleep to continue practicing. Worked out in the end as I came in 3rd place but to most people they would just assume I spent max 1 hr preparing the presentation and just winged it with some comedy and natural talent for presenting.

Thanks for sharing. I’m recently finding out I have “high functioning” autism. I’ve always been OCD, but I kept feeling like there was another component of my struggles that wasn’t ocd, as I had that managed with medication. I’ve struggled so much with social situations & anxiety about abandonment bc deep down I feel similar, that I couldn’t function on my own. It’s surprising to receive this diagnosis but also really validating. I struggled severely with social anxiety especially during high school. It helps to know my autism wasn’t a weakness or flaw that I couldn’t correct intellectually thru managing my behavior but rather something in my brain functioning. I would love to see a video on partner support for autism, and how they support and help with “low functioning” struggles. I know mine has taken a toll on former partners but my husband is really supportive and understanding

That's the only reason and tried to changed the diagnosis to ADHD and he made me tested for that but I wasn't. He still wouldn't diagnose me because he said people with Autism don't talk. It's sad. Keep doing your videos. People don't understand the struggles.

i really appreciated this video, i struggle to understand my recent autism diagnosis for multiple reasons, while at the same time i completed understand and it explains a lot about me. one big reason its hard for me to understand my high-functioning ASD diagnosis is how i’ve masked my symptoms for the majority of my life, even internally, nowadays i struggle with my identity partially due to this. this video worded a lot more i wasn’t able to identify and communicate myself, but wow can i heavily relate to a lot of your experience. thank you.

Thank you for this. I am currently struggling very much to come to terms with my "High" Functioning Autism. I've had the diagnosis for almost my entire life, but over the past couple years I became detached from it and began doubting whether I actually had autism. After revisiting a Neuropsychological Report from 2018, I've begun to rethink my current approach and am starting to revisit my diagnosis in a deeper way. If I do have Autism, I won't be able to make the most of my life without embracing and understanding the Diagnosis and what impacts my personal Autism has on me. It's just very difficult when it's such a variable and complex disorder. But accepting and understanding it may be the difference between crying and beating myself up, and actually moving forward in my life. Again, thank you for sharing.

Once again, thank you so much. Even though I’m a bloke, so much of what you say resonates with me. This is so true with me. Only today, I was being pushed to go back to work and felt completely overwhelmed at the prospect of having to put my mask on and engage again. This is because I’ve been labelled as high-functioning. It seems to be a point that is lost on those nearest to me, which is hugely distressing because they more than anyone else should know.

Excellent video, and really well put together and informative! Thanks for all of the work you've done on these! When someone irritates you by saying "Oh. You must be 'high' functioning," a funny reply would be "No, sorry, I haven't been smoking marijuana. Do I really seem high to you?"

Unfortunately no because whenever I burn a bridge, I usually do it for a very specific reasoning that I could never get over. I'm not trying to say I'm right all the time because one, that's terrible, and two, that's obviously not the case. But in my head, what they did was wrong (doesn't mean I was right about anything, just what they did was wrong in my personal opinion which of course doesn't mean it actually was wrong), and I thus no longer want them to be in my life. If that makes sense...?

I finally got a formal diagnosis a few months ago and I will be working with a vocational rehabilitation specialist to help me get a job. Lots of people get autistic people confused as people with helmets on their heads or banging their heads on the wall. Autism is so diverse and I have what’s recorded as “level 1”. People have told me “you’re not autistic”; I even feel nervous about sharing this with others. Sometimes I am forced to tell people. I’m in a 12 step program and was having a hard time understanding what people were telling me. To their instant judgement, I seem like a “frat boy” or someone who is arrogant but when they get to know me they always are like “I didn’t know you were like that”. So they don’t see what’s really going on and it’s difficult even being as “high-functioning” as I am because it’s easy to perceive me as a shy and nervous person. I can’t tell you how many times people have told me to not care what people think but the truth is I have little problem with that. It’s just that I get real anxious in crowds be due I hear every conversion and can’t make solid eye contact during a conversation. What really gets on my nerves is people saying “what’s wrong with you” or “you’re weird” or “why do you act that way” etc.. I had to learn to control my anger though. I’m 27 and consider myself an attractive male. Lots of women come up to me but end up not being able to handle how awkward I am. They perceive it as me having low confidence. Idk.. it’s weird but whatever I’ll keep going. 👍

You are wonderful and I thankyou for sharing this, this is so helpful for people like me, who don‘t know much about all the aspects. For me autism was a person that isn‘t able to communicate with our world much and I just learn that there is so much more. I wonder if it is good to have the same name for something that is similar in sensory problems but so difficult in the effect on the person having it. That‘s why I thought calling some as having ‚Asperger‘ is more accurate but you explain that it‘s just levels in the spider graph, it makes so much sense to me now.

When you shared you really cannot live by yourself and that your boyfriend and parents help you (did I remember that right?) I was surprised and impressed. I hide the fact that I have trouble with executive functioning because I’m so embarrassed. As a result I’m unable to have my grandchildren come to my house. They’re growing up, and I’m missing so much.

Please don't take comments like "u don't look autistic" seriously or invalidating as much as frustrating this can be. Reason being a lot of people genuinely have no idea on the subject or have very stereotypical views...society needs more awareness and it is a long process so it is brilliant to see you raising awareness on the topic.

To be honest the doctors did coin the phrase High functioning and low functioning. I understand your iceberg explanation very well. When my 19 yr old Granddaughter sees a new doctor they always to this day ask how high functioning she is. I guess I don't understand how to explain it to them. She can not read nor do math. She will never be able to live on her own. What more can I say to a doctor who asks this question about her? Thanks for your help and education on this subject.

I just came across your video ! I have an almost 5 year old and ever since she was about 3 my daughter started to show some signs of autism. Around 4 I went and talked to her pediatrician along with my husband and he totally dismissed all of her actions were just chalked down to her being highly Intelligent and she doesn't have autism . I myself have tourettes syndrome I know that things like autism and tourettes don't necessarily always affect the person's intellectual capabilities. Back to my daughter , the doctor started naming off famous people who my husband and I did research on them ALL HAD AUTISM !!!! This has been a great struggle because ever since the doctor said she doesn't have autism my husband has compleltly brushed it off . I have had multiple conversations with him like no my momma gut is telling me she has autism I'm doing all of this research and he's saying now yeah well what can that change nothing we are still going to love her . That's not it at all its the fact that I don't want her suffer when there's great resources put there now a days especially since her severity isn't high I'm assuming since the doctor completely chalked all of her traits down . Even very promenate traits . Like hand flapping . Melt downs . Not talking fully .
