IBD stands for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, usually referring to Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis.
They’re a group of conditions that involve inflammation of different parts of the gut, usually being diagnosed between the ages of 15-30.
They can cause tummy pain, diarrhoea which is sometimes bloody and weight loss, among other symptoms.
These symptoms can commonly flare up and then enter a period where they’re not so bad, called remission.
The exact causes aren’t known, but it’s thought to be linked to genetics, environmental factors and even the immune system.
Blood and stool tests can help identify inflammation, with CT and MRI scans of the tummy as well as camera tests helping to confirm it.
There’s currently no cure, but medication can help the inflammation, treat any infection and suppress the immune system from making things worse.
Specific diets and lifestyle changes are also incredibly important, with surgery sometimes being needed in severe cases.
