What is in the Basement of my Uncle Ron's House? It's not Good - AC Problems!

We have major A/C issues in Ron's house. This requires going into the basement and it's not a pleasant place to be. Spiders, a dead squirrel, dead AC coils, and then we get onto the roof, then we get dangerous and attempt to repair storm damage to my main power line rain head. There's a lot in this video!

Filter should really have a housing so its not pulling the basement air or be below the coil like you mentioned and tape off the opening on the return - the pump you thought was a sump pump is actually called a condensate pump, it pumps all the moisture and condensation the unit removes from the air out that drain tube that was hit by the mower/storm whatever happened, I like the videos on the houses! Your uncles and aar hq! Great work and great maintenance and repairs!

Hello there cowboy here again just a quick note you're absolutely correct there should be a filter under the A coils id recommend a HEPA filter all considered a d you can change it about every three to four months you only need to remove that little strip at the bottom of the A frame cover not the entire thing but you'll still have to go down the dungeon and yes move the pipes lol I love the old place personal that's my style I'd be very happy there except for the cold anyway all the best a little bit of repairs at a time so not to seam overwhelming it'll get there remember always be safe healthy and happy God Bless 🤠

You save so much doing little jobs. Sadly I have to get more and more people too help me out. No way I would have drilled through asbestos like Randy did without the proper prep (mask, vac pulling in shavings). Even I know that. Randy should get the siding tested. As he says it just takes money too get the place sorted. I've spent $40k and still need a new kitchen and bathroom.

Get a couple of rolls of foil tape and tape all the seams on those vent lines. Then put some insulation over the supply lines and foil tape those. You can also use the foil tape to seal up the area around the filter and to hold the filter down. Should make your HVAC run so much more efficiently.

I don't get the hatred, Randy didn't go off on anything, not Nick or the house didn't throw any wrenches, was calm cool and collected, nice job Randy. Nick you have shot up a foot or two before our very eyes, I love the working with Randy, you are growing up to be a very nice young man. I too hope you are able to keep this little house and to one day fix it up the way it needs to be, but until that time you do what you can. My air-conditioning went out a couple of weeks ago and of course on the hottest day of the year. I'm 65 and not able to do a lot of the things I use to, and I can't take the heat. I called a professional and he came out and at first he said my unit in the backyard was dirty, but he would need to go get the cleaner and come back, which he did. After doing what he did in the backyard, the air still wasn't working and after some other investigation he figured out the blower motor went out. He said he had one on the truck and he replaced the bad with the new one, after that the air was working great and still is. The bill was over $800 and I had to borrow that to be able to pay the bill, it is truly hell getting old. For the people who say if you don't know anything about it then you should call a professional. That is true but for most of us we don't have the money in the bank for an emergency house repair, so it's do yourself or learn to live with it. I appreciate the do it yourselfer he will learn more from fixing it up then you could in a book or school. Randy nice job on the cleaning, I thought it looked pretty clean after you were done. Randy all I can say is to just keep being you and haters gonna hate. 😀✌❤

The outside unit gets plugged up as well. It's a giant radiator that surrounds the works. Hose and detergent a soft brush maybe. Clean the fins so the air can move through. The capacitors fail commonly on the outside units. If it's not running at all.

I sweep my roof. It is sort of flat in spots and we live around a lot of trees, so it requires sweeping (or leaf blowering) at least 3 times in the fall. Good news though is that you don't have to have a ladder, you can just go out through the attic window.

Always funny sometimes, you post videos about things that I am having issues with. My A/C Died on Saturday and had an A/C Guy out here today to look at it, was just a capacitor on the A/C Unit that died, so had them replace it which was not expensive, but also had them install an A/C Saver unit on it also, that way the power does not surge to the unit when it powers on, supposed to help the longevity of the unit.. $655 repair, which was definately worth it. Just thought it funny that you put out an A/C Problems video when I was having A/C problems.

Great job! I bet that filter was 90 percent the reason for the flow issues, that one was really full of dust and dirt. With that rust on the evaporator lucky did not have any freon leaks, seems to be a common culprit that even I had run into.
@Gramps83
@Gramps83 Жыл бұрын
That AC unit needs to be rotated 90 to sit horizontal (some units and be oriented either way). I guarantee you that thing gets submerged. Definitely needs the right size filter and a door over that. I'd go over all the ducting seems with aluminum tape to minimize how much air escaping.

I believe the siding on the house is asphalt shingles, not asbestos. Ambient air enters the bottom of the coils, cold air comes out the top,(That's why it was so clean on top) the crud will be on the inside (bottom) of the coil. Be gentle wire brushing that coil, they are very delicate and easily damaged.
@jimmycheese3817

You can cut the PVC pipe in an accessible area and install a Fernco fitting (rubber sleeve with pipe clamps on both sides) then glue all the PVC to PVC fittings together. They also sell metal duct tape used to seal the galvanized duct work together to minimize air leaks. Obviously clean both sides where the PVC and duct work meet before sealing.

The pump is an AC condensate pump...catches the condensation and pumps it out into either a drain line or out into the yard...There's a level sensor in the sump that turns it on and off. That broken hose is where the condensate gets pumped out into the yard...usually you want to run it away from the foundation so it can drain into the lawn away from the foundation.

@JB91710 Жыл бұрын
You need to drill two pilot holes. One that goes all the way through the trim and the stud that is equal to the diameter of the screw "Shaft". The second hole is big enough for the screw to slide through on the trim piece only. Then you slide the screw through the trim and let the threads of the screw threads into the stud and pull the screw head and the trim against the house. If you only drill the first hole, the threads will engage both pieces and if the trim is away from the house, it will stay away from the house, locked on the threads.
