If you broaden the concept of organizational psychology into organizations, even if not in the workplace.... there exists an overlay of information which helps dive back into the workplace with better depth and breadth of understandings. Granted, workplace and consulting tends to bring in the actual contracting and revenue... it is also how and where the differential between EAP and employee benefits and those of the rest of the family or community group. These things matter... Further, there are many many various groups of people and/or factions (for lack of a better word) embedded within any organizations. The process of working together and community culture and also bringing the distinct ability and needs of disagreement in productive fashion is vital to the health of any organization. This is the large scale reality and wealth of Value of diversity in all its forms.

@@bill_the_butcher I'm an I O Psychology PhD student, and have had doubts about where I'm heading after, and during, the program. One massive hurdle is knowing how to market what you do to others, most (even CEOs) don't have a clue what i o psychology is and assume it's just HR. Then in some states, although i o psychology is not clinical psychology, you many not be able to call yourself an "I O Psychologist", even with a PhD, without basically being a clinical psychologist with an internship, which is nonsense in my opinion. I like the field, it offers a lot of opportunity for creativity and a bit of mathematics for those who like statistics, but, in my opinion, it is incredibility difficult to get work, unless you are from some networked school. @@cece6448 great suggestions! Also, I know that some high schools don't have a lot of options. I went to a very small high school that did not have any psychology or sociology, but one thing I did because I knew what I wanted to study was that whenever there was an open assignment in a class (like having to write a paper on a topic you chose), you can usually go to the teacher and tell them what you are interested in and ask them if you can do it on a psychology instead - a lot of times they will let you and it will be a good way to get some knowledge and still get your other homework assignments done. (I remember I asked my biology teacher if I could do one of my papers on a psychology topic instead because I knew that's what I wanted to major in in college and they were happy to let me.)

I didn't like it at all and thought I was "bad" at it. It's crazy, because now I love it. But that was not the case at the start of my I/O journey. When I got to my grad program for the first time ever I had a class that was more what we would call "applied statistics" meaning rather than just doing z-scores or someone with no logic behind it. I was learning WHY we might chose to do stats, and HOW stats can answer really interesting questions about people like how to measure motivation or burnout. As soon as I started to understand what you can do with statistics it magically made more sense. My experience may not be the same for you, but just know that I went into I/O afraid of statistics and it worked out so well for me. Best of luck to you! Heather

Hey Heather is there any difference between industrial and organisational psychology?
@HeatherWhiteman Жыл бұрын
Hi Priyank, that's a great question. It sort of depends on who you ask and what organizations/university you are in. In some places there is a bit of difference and people will joke about whether they are an "I" or an "O" with the industrial side being a bit more focused on measurement and assessments, and the organizational side being a bit more focused on things like leadership, motivation, and culture. But even in places where they do treat them as different, the topics under each can be very different from what I've just described. I don't think the difference between the two is really present in the applied world and I think the two tend to overlap a lot in what they do. I'm sure different people would have a different answer to this question though.

Are there I/O summer research programs for undergrads or non psych majors? Would getting a minor in Psych help?
@HeatherWhiteman5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben - That's awesome to hear! I think the fact that you are doing a psych lab will really help! Since you are still getting your undergrad degree, have you thought about going to talk to one of the academic advisers in your university's psych department? Sometimes they do have internships or a professor that might be looking for a smart person who has a different background (and therefore really cool way of looking at things). Depending on if you have room in your schedule, I do think a minor in psych would help if you really wanted to pursue I/O psychology; but I wouldn't do it at the expense of not finishing your engineering degree - you're so close and you should be proud of that one too. It will make you a really awesomely rounded person!

The BS degree will likely give you more analytics & research exposure which will be extremely helpful for your career no matter what and especially in people analytics. However, I personally think you should make the decision based more on the school and the professors you will learn from. It seems like nearly any psych orientation would be useful in io psych but im curious as to which are sought out by employers. Or perhaps it only matters that you are able to sell and apply your skills/training whatever that may be. Sorry for the length and any of your thoughts about any of this stuff would be very much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Its a fantastic resource for the budding psychologist! Subbed!

Hi - Thanks for the comment. I completely agree with your comment about it mostly mattering in how you apply your skills and training in how you are able to use what you learn. I don't actually believe the work with primates was very beneficial to my IO psychology understanding, however the research I undertook while working in that area was hugely useful. The more skills you can gain in understanding research, analytical thinking and studying psychology related phenomena the better. Also, if you really want to go into I/O Psychology and are looking for work that could help. It's important to remember that this is the study of work and organizations; so, if you don't already have experience working in a business/government/non-profit, then it may be really helpful context for you to have experience working in an organization while you learn about how to study an organization. That's something I personally didn't have when I started and I think would have been helpful to learn the content more deeply. Best of luck to you on your journey! Heather

I want to become an IO psychologist and study abroad.. is it essential I get a masters in IO Psychology or would a relevant psychology/business based masters degree suit the criteria in the career? What type of masters if so would you suggest Thanks

I have completed my undergrad in engineering and have 3 years of corporate experience. Will I be eligible for IO psych as its my calling
@HeatherWhiteman5 жыл бұрын
Hi - Not sure if you are asking if you would be eligible for a degree in the field or just a job in the profession. If interested in a job, I'm happy to tell you that I believe there would be many opportunities that would allow you to apply yourself in I/O related areas (though you will need to gain some experience on the people side of things, probably with friends from an HR or Operations department). If talking about getting a degree, well that will be up to the school to determine acceptance and they are all different. But the real great news is that you have identified an area you are passionate about, you are well ahead of many people in that regard! Your engineering skills may make you better suited to I/O roles more aligned to people analytics or HR Technology which would let you do I/O work and leverage your undergrad - just as one suggestion for you. Good luck!

Goodday Heather! I am in the process of completing my HRM degree with no psychology background. I want to branch into IO Psychology and consult eventually. How do you advise I merge my HRM with IOP?
@karabokopelo59324 жыл бұрын
@Emma Rose I know of a university in Canada that told me that I would have to do a psychology degree to do the masters. But you know what, we will find a way to do it that would suit the both of us. Let's go get the masters and until then, let's start practicing it and slowly branching into it. 😁

Hi! I’m currently a junior in high school and i’m trying to find out my major for college. I have been very interested in the psychology but also have a passion for the business field. I’m really interested in Child Psychology and want to become a therapist but I am also very intrigued by Industrial-Organizational Psychology. If I was to major in Neuroscience in order to become a child Psychologist could I also use that major to get a job under Industrial-Organizational Psychology? Just incase I realize I don’t want to do child psychology?
@HeatherWhiteman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca - good news is you've got plenty of time to figure it out. And, yes, I do think neuroscience will align nicely. Coincidentally, I actually focused a lot on neuroscience and even worked in a neurophysiology lab for a few years before then switching over to I/O psychology. The concepts of neuroscience and business are definitely different, but the aspects around psychology, research and understanding people do complement eachother. Good luck!

I can't decide between I/O and an msw/mft degree
@HeatherWhiteman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Juneau - tough decision. I think you should definitely ask yourself what type of work you see yourself doing in the future as the typical career paths for graduates from each tend to be quite different.

How much does an I-O Psychologist make?

However much their employer is willing to pay them :p (Sorry, but just like every job there is no real answer to this question, it all depends on the circumstances.)

Hello there, its a great video How can i learn this from 0 knowledge of psychology? Is there any free course to master this?thank you
@HeatherWhiteman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ricky - Such a great question. I'm not aware of any and most people need obtain a masters to work in the field, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be possible to learn much of the same content on your own. You might be able to "audit" some of the online courses from universities and online course platforms like coursera that available for free.

Does I/o psychology have mathematics ??
@HeatherWhiteman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Achu - No, not necessarily. Depending on the specialization (there are multiple 'flavors' of I/O). Though most of the time you will see research as an essential skills and that tends to require at least some analytical skills to do it well.

@HeatherWhiteman5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ahmad - I'm sure you could continue your education in multiple fields (though you will need to see what kind of requirements your school has). However, I would say that your applied psychology coursework will probably have a lot of good overlap. Maybe talk to someone at your university about whether or not you could do I/O related courses as part of your courses toward your applied psychology degree. Best of luck!
