Wow! That Ni explains why I'm so focused on my future goals and why it's easier for me to give up other paths, compared to some of my other friends. The freedom phrase also makes so much sense too. My parent and family keep trying to get me to move back home, take on the duty of caring for my parents, etc. Before I've been able to carry out my own goals. And I bristle.

Holy crap, you just blew my mind completely. I am an intj and when you said we had good luck I was scoffing because I feel like I have terrible luck, until you clarified that it was not about avoiding bad luck but in having the bad and miraculously making it through and being prone to rare diseases. I had bacterial meningitis and recovered so fully that the doctors could hardly believe it, and this was in 1992 back before they were using hyperbaric therapy. I rarely comment but could not resist this time. Love your vids, you are doing me a great service. Thank you so much.

Interesting what you said about NJ’s bouncing back from “bad luck”, that they find themselves in trouble but make stunning recoveries. I was reminded of something then, when my mom was pregnant with me. I was a twin, but she miscarried my twin at 2mos gestation, an unusual occurrence for it to happen to just one. She didn’t know she still had me, so they performed a D&C on her, which is literally an abortion, to clear out the womb after a miscarriage. By some miracle I survived both of these events and had the room packed w doctors and med students shocked at how I could get through that. I also have a chronic illness but I’m currently in the process of another stunning recovery😃 -INFJ

Oh, yeah, this too. People sometimes, not often, people ask what it's like to be an INTJ. It's great because I seem to be able to figure out what is going to happen based on previous things I've experienced. My mind is always going, churning over information, trying to glean something from the chaos of my thoughts. I usually understand the people I am close to maybe better than they do, but that's just conjecture. I study people all the time. My thoughts are mostly non-emotional but there is a lot of humor - I crack myself up 100 times a day. I see humor in many things that others get upset about. I see the absurdness of it all. I consciously seek a higher perspective. Watching your self go by so to speak. I feel extremely lucky to be the type I am. However, there are some not so good aspects of being INTJ. Always feeling alien to the world and to others. I'll say something I think is interesting and enlightening and people will look at me like I burped up a toad. I still can't understand why they don't get what I am saying... so I say much less. Not being able to communicate with other types is isolating. It's a constant tension between wanting to understood and wanting to communicate.

Wow I can totally relate to seeing humor in things that others get upset about, laughing at things just because they seem absurd. And I can relate to being quiet and saying very little just because people will think the things I say are super weird. On the plus side someone once said of me that I rarely speak but when I do it's usually something deep and insightful. So I guess some people appreciate us.

And, you are right. From what I observed as a young Ni, the power of focus is very significant. For example, I have been focusing on Psychology because I am willing to be a psychiatrist. On the day of my college enrollment, out of nowhere- a professor stood there and asked me which department am I looking for, I said to him "I am going for a psychology-related department." He said to me "Well, I am a psychologist professor and I will buy the enrollment paper for you so no need to get there." There is this significant pattern of all things suddenly shaped into one and my consciousness brought me back to the day that I choose an interesting blind book which is then turned out to be "Gestalt Therapy".I focus and it comes and it comes and I create no rival amongst humanity. As if the infinite illusion is dancing in front of me, but I am the one to determine my own reality.

I think I've somewhat cracked the supposed "mystery" behind the abstract nature of Ni. Ni is about taking general snapshots of ideas, concepts, systems (or almost anything, really) often bypassing the analysis of the details in between. Ni does this because it is trying to rapidly extract, from the subject in question, the essence or general "point" behind it, not bothering to ponder about details that are irrelevant to the general meaning of the subject or thought in question. In other words, Ni helps you extract the "jist" of something intuitively without having to go too deep into meticulous analysis; a shortcut that allows quick understanding, if you will. INFJs then contextualize these different bits of information they have gathered through Ni to paint a larger whole, attempting to determine the grand MEANING of something. Jesus Christ(INFJ), for example, loved to tell parables. Parables are ALL about extracting a MEANING from a story. Leaving out any details in the story that are irrelevant to the overall ESSENCE or lesson of the message is essential in telling an effective parable. this is what Ni is all about. It is about gathering general information which is then placed into a hypothetical bowl, in which the information is related to one another in a way that illustrates the essence or grander meaning of what the information implies within a wider context.

@@CSJoseph yes. They are very concerned with the "big picture" regarding pretty much everything, including where their own existence lies in the greater context of life and reality itself, and hence the sense of "purpose". The general ability that the INFJ has through Ni in contextualizing things is applied to themselves as well, making them pretty existential. It's all about the greater whole for them. Still trying to figure out how Ni and Ti relate, since Ni is a perceiving function, and I'm not sure if Ni itself is the thing that "connects the dots" in the mind of an INFJ, or if that's their Ti.

What you've just said there, in essence, is that Ni is direct, as opposed to being informative. Which, if you look at the type grid, is true since all except for 2, Ni users are direct. Only correction I'd make is Ni isn't really concerned with the 'big picture', relatively speaking. Yes in a way, Ni users are all grandiose and like to see things from a 'higher' or 'larger' perspective. But they also only do it from the perspective of what THEY desire. This is not really big picture like how Ne users look at how everyone's futures are affected, and at what everyone desires. Ni users are grandiose, getting to the most crucial and most important detail, but Ne users are the big picture guys, since they will literally see things from the perspective of the future of humanity as a collective and our existence within the universe.

As an Ni-dom I was shaking my head through almost the whole video. Ni is not about what I "want" or desire, nor it is correlated with "luck". Ni seeks (in a healthy user) universal Truths, just pure understanding of natural law and how life, humans, systems etc work... I am not only not at the forefront, I self-efface because what matters is Truth alone. What I want is not what matters, or, if you want to keep your analogy, what I want IS Truth.

I think this is kind of a shallow describtion of what introverted intuition is all about, even though what you say is correct. I have a introverted intuition hero and I am indeed very aware of what I want, but I'm also able to shift perspectives to another human beings to know what they want and why they want it, why they do what they do, why they think the way they think, etc. Almost anything people want, do or think makes total sense to me! I think it's great that you said that introverted intuition users can take what other people want and make it what they want, because that's basicly all I do in my work. I figure out what people want and it instantly becomes my goal and I then make a plan for the best path forward to reach that goal.

Introverted intuition is a perceptive function, is more of a subjective perception of reality. While Se gather the external information, the Ni construct an inner image of that and connect them, the capacity of Ni the future is no longer a consequence of seeing the patterns of random information gathered by Se and organizing mentally, so the actual information that works like causes will be the most possible future and consequence. Ni is the flux of information gathered and organized to see patterns, is like an mental image of something or just by abstraction an spider web. For Ni dominants is like breathe to do that because it is their natural function and requires not so much energy to do that. Sometimes, it can be bring back to conscious for them and use more intensely but it requires the control of Se (data).

I’m going to share my crazy will power story: I remember when I was in the Boy Scouts, I went to this national event called the National Jamboree which is located in West Virginia. Beforehand, (I was in D.C before the event) I kept getting bloody noses for no apparent reason, which wasn’t a severe illness but it was pretty annoying. I kept having to run to the bathroom so that I can stop the bleeding and go back to the action of whatever was going on at the time. This happened during camp as well and it was a pretty annoying problem, especially since there was so much going on. Anyways the survival story isn’t that but something that I did that was completely careless. Because of my forgetfulness of applying sunscreen, I got sunburn, but I didn’t pay too much at the time because I was like, well I can take the pain. Through the course of the whole week the sunburn became worse and worse, and became so bad that it was swelling up. It got to the point where I had second degree burns on my arms, all because of my carelessness to act and put on sunscreen. I was sent to the infirmary towards the end of the week to check on my burns, and at the end I had to wear a sweatshirt at the end, which I wore even though like it was 100 degrees out. Everyone was like that must have sucked, but it actually didn’t really ruin the experience for me. I say it is pretty worth it, like I met the president indirectly among a crowd of other Boy Scouts, and I scuba dived too. Also the people I hung out with were pretty great too (except one who got sent home for making lewd comments about girls in a separate campsite and one who thought I had aspergers for not talking).

That's one of the best explanation of Ni I've ever found. ❤Especially the part, that Ni knows what it wants and desires freedom. I'm INFJ and I knew what I wanted my future life to be since I was 4 years old. 😅 Of course not in details, but generally. And I totally hate, when somebody tells me what I should do... 🤮 Freedom is one of the most important things for me. I though before, that knowing what you want is Fi, because I FEEL what I want. So I was very confused, because I totally don't relate to other aspects of Fi like moral judgement based decisions, but I do relate a lot to everything that is connected to Ni. And that makes much more sense, if actually Ni is responsible for wanting. Thank you very much ❤

I think INFJs run the danger of being so enmeshed by the needs of others at their own expense, esp. to parents (worse if the have narc traits), that they run the high risk of neglecting their needs/wants to the point of not knowing what they TRULY want despite Ni hero. And because of Ni hero this causes deep colossal resentment & damage (body & mind) long term will powering their way to suppress their wants (Ni against Ni) esp. when they realize and perceive that even those closest to them don’t have their best interest at heart (Fe ethics+Fi critic cumulative moral rage) or don’t see the magnitude of effort required for their self sacrifice, take their sacrifices/pain for granted and keep demanding & demanding & taking & taking. The results of Ni against Ni self can be terrifying to behold and this constant high degree epic war inside will for sure run you to the ground. INFJs heed and prioritize yourselves. Then you can better help others. Easier said than done, but start leaning in that direction.

This was so mindblowingly true. It cleared up a lot of things to me. I've always little to no freedom all my life because my parents are very strict. I have always tried to please them but I couldn't do that when it comes to my freedom. Most of the days I'm behind the doors and there are no windows in here. I'll stay in there quietly doing what i am expected to until one fine day when no one has any idea what I am actually doing and I am out of that door in lightning speed. I've always felt guilty for lying to them every time I left home. No I understand that's just my Se keeping me sane. And about the luck, you gave me a different view. I have always felt like I'm unlucky in life. There were a lot of miseries in my life then and now. Health issues, abuses etc. But now I realize that I'm tremendously lucky to have over come all that and live like none of those ever happened to me.

I definitely can see us, INFJs, getting something or having something in us and bouncing back. This actually happened to me a few times. I won't go into details even though I want to. I seem to be very in tune with what's going on in my body, and I know what I need to do to fix or change things in that area, but I can also tend to neglect myself in this area from time to time also. Yin Yang, it all balances out! Side note: About freedom, I couldn't take LSD in school, because the one time I did it aggravated me so bad that I HAD to be quiet and sit at my desk that I just left school for the day. I was already fed up with the so-called education system, and knowing that I HAD to sit at my desk just was too much.

I’m an INFJ and I have to say I drive people crazy about what I want. It’s all about my goals and it comes off really selfish. I had an ENTP ex bf that would get so irritated because I am so tunnel vision about my goals and what I want out of life. Made me feel so guilty him calling me selfish but it’s who I am! I own horses and no matter how much I try to find other paths forward I always see that the horses are the absolute best path for my life. They honestly motivate me to make more money and have a better life for them and myself! I definitely see how I am so driven by my introverted intuition.

I'd thought I'd share my ideas on the intuitive process. Ne input, Ni process, Se output, Si feedback. We receive symbolic information from the collective unconsciousness with the Ne function. Ni pulls things apart, puts it back together, and then stores it in the temporary memory storage, Se. This step is usually those flashes of intuition we have while we are awake. When we dream at night, the Se information stored within us is transferred into our long term memory, Si, while we dream and can be related to the dreams we have during the night as the feedback.

The idea of willpower or want relating to Ni is a first for me and I cannot seem to wrap my head around it. Other authors such as Dr AJ Drenth have described Ni as a type of pattern recognition - coming to a new insight subconsciously. Dr Dario Nardi has described it as using all parts of the brain equally as if in a flow state and answers to problems are realized. These descriptions speak to me much more than the idea of willpower. What is your opinion on this matter? Do both descriptions somehow relate? Have you read the works of the above authors?

I thought I was potentially an ENTP but the more I watched these videos, I eventually came to the (unfortunate) reality I may not be. The way you described Ni really hit a nerve and found I could strongly relate. There have been countless times where I just laser focus on something I want and will go through any means to achieve it. After I finish (unaware of the mess I leave along the way, sometimes) I look, surprised by my own ambitions. It’s fun but can also be destructive (or so it has been in my case). I just assumed I was overly ambitious. lol

Ni basically means introspection, self awareness, insight, precognition and internalizing. It is awareness of internal outcome. That's why Ni dom users know how people will react under a certain condition. They want to know themselves deeply. They constantly search for meaning of their own life. They learn and do these things unconsciously but familiar to themselves.

As an INFJ I see the terrible repercussions of this every day in most families, it’s an epidemic around the world (how’s tradition working for ya so far?). You can trace the screw up states of most ppl down to their formative first years. It’s no secret, psychologists have known this for years, yet many parents don’t prioritize the experience of their children in those first crucial years. Many, if not most ppl should not be having children, at least not until they have learn how different ppl work and resolve their own issues.

Choice is a big deal for Ni users. My sweet mother would always say "you have the choice to do whatever you want however, always remember, there are consequences to your actions and you will be held responsible for them." Not sure if she knew my cognitive function however she and my dad did a good job. Also there was constant affirmation due to my Fi shadow. I thought I was actually a bad child and made my parents suffer while raising me up however my parents especially my mum has a list of some of the things I did and she would say "you made parenting very rewarding." I easily forget the kind things I do for others however my mum has a way of always reminding me of all the things I do for others. As an INFJ, it is very easy to critic ourselves very harshly however having people who love us and have a list of the good we have done reminds us not to be so critical.

My experience of Ni feels foremost like observing thought formation in my own mind, and since people aren't so different, extrapolating this process (albeit not perfectly) for other people and then society at large. This ability to understand the process of thought formation in healthy and unhealthy contexts makes INFJ's in particular incredible counselors. Again, an imperfect process with occasional bursts of stunning insight.

Well said. This is exactly my primary complaint with Joseph's understanding of the cognitive functions. To sum up introverted intuition as willpower seems to completely sideline the function's applicability beyond just the user himself. Ni users have an uncanny capacity for understanding the core elements and dynamics of any particular situation it sets it's focus on. This is strangely omitted whenever he discusses Ni.

Aye Chase. Dope Ni description. Feedback: I think I might know why there's confusion in the community regarding your Ni/Ne definitions. Here, I will focus on Ni. It may simply be due to the vernacular you choose. Example. You often say: "Ni = what people 'want.'" I feel like what you mean is: "Ni = Where people want to see themselves end up/what they want to see themselves become/what finish line they want to see themselves cross." The key word there is "see." That's exactly what it is. If the "sight" is foggy, so will be the "want." The way you currently describe it sounds like you mean only desires or intentions, based on the here & now, with no regards to **the process** of how any singular future outcome consideration is achieved. Which, again is done by "seeing" (a most critical distinction for us listeners). It's just like Si, only forward. And focused. The way I see it, it's almost like Si/Ni are the maps, while Se/Ne are the Territory. And in some way I don't have words for, they are, on some level(s), interchangeable. Have you seen the movie: Arrival? It's basically alll about why you give INFJ's hell for not rising to the occasion; because you want "her" for "them" (if that makes sense). And what a brilliant name for a movie all about depicting Ni & its processes 😁

Hi Chase! An INFP here. Really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work! I had a bit different conception of what Ni was. I thought it was like "subjective pattern recognition" as opposed to Ne which is "objective pattern recognition". Let me explain- say, you have a plastic cup, glue, and a box of legos. A person who has Ne high up in their function stack would be able to come up with say, a dozen possible things to create with those items. Now, a person with Ni high up in their function stack would first think of what each item "represents". Like the rationale behind the structure of the cup and lego and how all of them got here in front of them on the table. They'd think of that first instead of thinking about how each item connects with the other. They'll think how each item connects with their conception of the "reservoir of patterns" they've stored up in their lives. Does all of this make sense? Could you clarify this please?

I predicted early on that the system would be implemented way later then the 'experts' predicted. People looked at me like I burped up a toad. But as it turns out, the project is now at least 1 year late. It kind of makes me chuckle that certain things are so clear to me but so surprising to most everyone else. However, if you give me a choice, even if it's something I normally wouldn't be interested in, I'll most likely say yes. For example, a relative of mine used to force me into going with her family to concerts and stuff, and I'd go but I'd hate her and the whole experience. @ray Sensors do not prefer the past for it's own sake, and intuitives are not past-aversive. They (sensors) more easily see the future as predicted from past events, and thus are usually more into tradition and proven methods. They prefer reality to future possibility. Hence intuitives are more attuned to the future because they like to see (and\or create) new possibilities. The past for an intuitive is a tool to help predict future possibilities, and they can more readily see the past as a littany of failed possibilities (rather than optimal situations based on limits of the time).

Hey! I would love to say what I have learned about Ni that I didn't hear you talk about in this video. I know my comment is long, but I hope you at least give it a chance as you may find it beneficial. Introverted Intuitives also look at others paths forward, but only one path at a time, as they do with themselves. They might think of other possible futures, but it won't be totally comfortable like it is for an Ne user and it won't happen as rapidly as Ne. I think all people look at others' lives and shape their lives due to inspiration from the other. I am an ENFJ and I think myself and other Ni people actually come up with futures and creative ideas that we haven't heard anyone else say. Rather, our vision consists of an amalgamation of things we have seen, experienced, and felt, and have found appealing, to make something unique. I am going to reiterate this. Ni uses images to create symbols. We use images from the external, but mix the images together and distort them to create something unique and meaningful to us. A lot of Ni users actually don't want to be like everyone else and move in the opposite direction, to create something personal. Remember, the introverted functions don't want to be controlled by the object. So their dreams actually can be very unique to the norm. Ni doesn't just use Se to create the vision of their future, it uses other functions, such as Fi, to decide if their vision reflects their values and feels good to them. And also their Te, to start implementing the vision. And Ti to structure how it could be done. And Fe to make sure their vision benefits others. Here is one example of how Ni works for an Ni dom. Ni doms are constantly taking in information via Se, but what stands out to them from the information that is coming in, is the patterns within that information. For example, they will watch as a person repeats a similar phase, either in a short period of time, like a minute, or over a long period of time, like weeks or months. This pattern will be indicative of something, their secondary function will decide what the pattern means. Because the Ni dom is so focused on a pattern within a moment, they may miss out on other relevant data. This is a weakness. However, their ability to see and focus on what most others cannot, to understand the meaning behind events around them, is amazing. Pattern recognition helps them to understand other peoples complexes, focuses, intentions, and can help them predict what others are going to do and why. For an Ni dom, this pattern recognition is just happening for them. They literally see the patterns around them as they emerge. An Ni parent will notice patterns, but it will be felt more like a hunch, or an airy realisation in the form of sudden airy memories that show pieces of the pattern. They won't watch the patterns emerge casually and obviously, like a glowing neon light, as the Ni doms do. Dario Nardio found that Ni users go into flow state when they are learning something new. This actually makes a lot of sense to me as an ENFJ. I tend to do things well straight off the bat, or I can suddenly develop new skills, but then I may find it hard to remember how I did it in the future, or I will quickly forget what I have learned :( If we practice something a lot our skills will compound though of course. This may also be why us ENFJ's are so good at giving advice to others, but then bad at implementing what is needed for ourselves to thrive on a daily basis. Because we can quickly see what is needed for growth, but don't have the Si, Te, to apply it. This is something we can work on, and not to be used as a full excuse. Ni doms are good at filtering out their reality to focus on the things that will get them to where they want to go. For example, saying no to things that contradicts their vision for themselves, and yes to things that support their visions. Ni parents need to consciously engage in this activity if they want to realise their visions. An Ni user may know what someone is going to do long before that person even knows what they are going to do, as they are aware of that persons patterns, and they are also focused on the future, so they consider how those same patterns will likely emerge in future situations. Ni doms are better at this than Ni parents and sort of just do it naturally. Ni parents need time to reflect and a reason delivered to them to cause such a vision to manifest.

No wonder I hated my parents. I'm an Ne user and was parented in an Ni way (although I'm still not sure if my mom has Ne inferior or Ne nemesis. I still can't tell the difference between the two).

I think I got it. Just need some clarity: Mark's always been a homeschooled child. This is his first day of public school. He sees several groups of people doing several different activities in each group. He observes until one group in particular catches his attention (with a sense of fascination): Soccer. He observes until he understands that the object of the game is to keep the ball away from one another. Feet only. He darts in, gets the ball in his possession, & keeps the ball from everyone (until they yell out after him to bring the ball back.. He didn't observe a goal.. So, he didn't have the understanding of that being a definitive juncture.. Instead, he had set the goal to keep the ball from the whole field of people. "I bet I can beat all of them" was the internal dialogue he said to himself prior to charging towards them). This is how he continues after all of his interests in life. And, whenever he allows an outside influence to guide him from this model, he gets in trouble. Breaking & entering... Stealing.. Drugs.. Kinds of "trouble." Another example: Mark observes a choreographed style dance recital. When a masculine male (meaning, one who defies the stereotypical effeminate male dancer stereotype) takes center stage and performs each move with command & confidence... He is both shocked & amazed. Shock at understanding of that even being possible. Amazed, because, he realizes that he wants to be able to dance like that (the thought of his macho friends criticising him hasn't even come into mind yet. Nor, will it matter when it does). He fervently pursues the Arts (& plays Football). He only quits the 2 when he looses interest based on his distaste with the (ironically... or not) similar aspects within the culture of each group. I used the 2nd example because, it's slightly different in that Mark knows he wants to dance without having actually *been* that person yet... Yet pursues it anyway. Whereas, in the first example, he jumped right in. Meaning, there was less doubt in the first example & more to process in the 2nd. Both were based on Observation & Want. In terms of definitive Ne & Ni... Are those examples different? If so, which is Ni & which is Ne? If not.. Are both of those examples Ne or Ni? Thanks in advance!

Can you expound more on Ni? I feel like I never really fully understand it. I've heard so many people describe it in esoteric, mysterious terms. I'm curious how it functions/works. How it handles data/information. Or is it something that makes all of the other functions work differently? Si Ne Se all seem to have specific abilities and things that they do but Ni seems abstract.

As I try to get: Se is about seeking and adding new data. Ne is about predicting variations of the existing data. Si is about relying on and using the existing data. Ni is about predicting connections among the existing data.

@@NoName-ze4qn not exactly. The perception functions are not so focused on handling data. That's more of a judgment function thing. The perception functions are more focused on 'doing'. It's sorta like a more practical element. What we have done, what we are doing and what we could do. For example: Si is your personal experience. What I HAVE ALREADY done. Ni is ambition/desire. What I AM GOING to do. Se is performance (all about making a good experience for Si users I'm other words). Also what WE COLLECTIVELY HAVE done. Ne is awareness of possibilities (provides Ni users with options to choose from). Also what WE COLLECTIVELY WILL do.

Ni is quite simply, ambition or desire. Nothing more, nothing less. It is what you desire to do, what you want to achieve, what you want to have, the choices you would like to make, etc. Obviously if it's all about your desire/ambition, it requires a lot of freedom, because you can't do what you want to do, or have what you desire, unless you have to freedom to do so. That's where the freedom aspect comes from. Also, so long as you are constantly trying to do something, then when random opertunities arive, you will always take full advantage of them. That's where the 'luck' comes from. Your just taking better advantage of the random 'lucky' things that happen and your avoiding anything random bad/'unlucky' things that take place. Whatever happens, you are always just looking for a way to continue pursuing what you desire/your ambition or to find a way to make it happen, and so it creates the illusion of 'good luck'. Fortune favours the bold after all. Also the reason Ni users 'know their own future'. Or 'can control their own fate', is simply because they know what they want to do, and they pursue what they want until they get. It is 'willpower' in a sense. Like what Naruto has. He wants to achieve something, so he stops at nothing to make it happen. Ni is not mysterious at all. It's the easiest function to understand. Most people describe Ni in mysterious ways because they confuse it with Ne and they don't actually know what they are talking about.

I know what i want, but i am worried that it doesnt really make me happy. When i finally obtain it turns out it only made happy for a short time and i am like i should have gotten something else or i crave the next thing on my desire list. Is that more of a Ni thing, because i know what i want, just not sure what makes me happy Or is that Ne thing because i only think i know what i want but in reallity i dont because doenst really make me happy?
