I have the Gojira and Petrucci. I have to agree that the Doubler on the Petrucci plugin is a game changer. I find it sounds great on clean tones especially. You can also mix and match the Neural plugins in your DAW and, for example, use the overall speakers and head from Gojira but add on the Doubler or Pitch Shifter from Petrucci.

The most valuable lesson I learned from touring and studio work has been to keep it as simple as possible. I slowly moved away from being a gear head, to having the least amount of stuff as possible-away from boutique amps and to an entire Kemper setup. Less weight, less "stuff" however cool it may look to have around. I equate it to collecting full-size pinball machines now. Cheers, neighbor 😂 local 440

What made you go with the Fender pedal? Have you tried out the Quad Cortex? It’s the hot item among the modeler community. It’s my first and I absolutely love it, came from the Boss GT-1000 prior. I love the simplicity. I also have a SD power stage for when I need to run to cab, most of the time I just run direct and rely on the monitors or my IEM.

I had been very interested in the GT-1000 as a matter of fact! I wasn't really super interested in anything out there tbh, because I feel like all the technology is a few years old now, and because I wasn't in any hurry, I was simply waiting to strike when the next "big thing" came out. I certainly wouldn't say the FTMP is the next big thing, but because I've been checking out some of the new Fender/Jackson stuff, I decided to go ahead and give the FTMP a try.

Hey Rob, side question: For stage/tour effects setups, do you use this master board setup like shown here? I ask because I’ve always used stomp boxes, because if one goes belly up it’s quick and easy to change out on the fly. Curious about your backup should something go down at the worst time? (Not that I’m touring/live gigging as I’m retired, but curious to how you young guys are doing it)
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 7 ай бұрын
Chimaira's show at the Inkarceration Fest this summer will be my first time using this new pedal board setup. In the past, I started with stomp boxes, but I found myself dancing around too much, having to hit multiple pedals at once to get the sound I wanted at certain times. Then one day I heard Dave Mustaine recommend the Digitech GSP 1101, which is a multi FX unit, and I gave it a try and loved it. I've used it ever since, and that was around 2006 I'd say. I always had a second unit in my rack as a backup. And if all else failed, I could simply bypass it and go straight to my head. With this new setup, I won't have a head, and I won't have a backup, so I'll be rolling the dice. I'm a firm believer in having backups for everything, so this will be something new for me, and like I said, I'm kind of just rolling the dice!

Question about the live recording, here : I read a very interesting interview of Ace Frehley some years ago where he discussed the "fake" Alive (I & II) Kiss albums, which were supposedly recorded in the studio. Ace explained that producer Eddie Kramer told him early in the process that the live tapes were "problematic", and when asked why he made that statement he just played them to Ace which noticed right away that a lot of things needed to be fixed, like unwanted feedback (a lot !), rhythm guitar mistakes here and there, some vocals (mostly backing vox) etc. In the end they kept the live drums, the audience (which gave that "theatre feel" you're talking about which is incredible on the first Alive album, especially on a song like "Firehouse",) had to redo a few bass parts, almost all rhythm guitars and all the backing vox. They kept 80% of the lead guitar and most of the lead vocals. Another good example is "Unleashed in the east" by Judas Priest : Rob Halford explained he had a huge cold when the shows were recorded so he could hardly sing and they redid all the vocals in one take per song in England ; the instrumental parts are mostly live, they just fixed a few mistakes here and there (like a small part of a solo). And on Van Halen live album "Rght here, fight now", Sammy Hagar explained in his autobiography that Eddie Van Halen was outta tune most of the show because of his extensive use of the Floyd rose, so he redid all the guitars in his studio, then the vocals started to sound outta tune themselves because Hagar sang primarily on the live guitars so he and Michael Anthony redid all their vocals in the studio in one afternoon (the same way Halford did with Priest, one continuous take per song).... so all that was finally live was the rhythm section, drums + bass. I wondered if you had the same kind of problems with Chimaira, because I know as a musician that once you start fixing something, it's an endless process (Pandoras' box !)....
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld Жыл бұрын
You're exactly right! Almost every live recording that we hear (at least ones that are sold to the public) are doctored in some way. We're very aware of the rabbit holes you can head down once you start fixing stuff, so we're being very careful about that, and really want to keep it as live and real as we possibly can!

@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 11 ай бұрын
Thanks man! Nope, I've never used OBS. I use something called Loopback, which allows my screen recordings to capture the audio from Pro Tools. The whole thing is never easy though, and I often feel like every single video I make, which involves this method, is like setting it up again for the first time, every time. My workflow isn't the greatest. But efficient workflows are created through repetition, so maybe it's just that I don't do it often enough for it to become routine.

@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld Жыл бұрын
Interesting question! The answer is, yes! But Coming Alive was different in that Ben actually recorded the live audio from that show himself. Remember those "lines" I mentioned that run to the front of house? Well at the Coming Alive show, Ben brought a full portable recording setup to the show, and we split those lines so that signal was sent to Ben for recording, AND to front of house. So in the end, Ben had much more control over what was recorded, and he recorded it the way he wanted to record it. So we had a bit of an advantage with that show's audio. Never the less, it's the exact same team working on every aspect of this current mix, and I promise you, it will slay!🤘

Ben is perfect for the mixing, because the Switched "live" album was completely artificial, but I did love the vibe of that album.....Keep up the great work Rob.

It might have been "spread your ep" live in Miami.... 2001. I only have a couple of tracks from that ep, like "anymore"@@RobArnoldWorld

Hey Rob, you said you had to shut down your studio back a ways ago, you still do any mixing/mastering/etc…. Or do you just use your stuff for your channel and personal projects? Take care, brutha.

Yeah I just moved my entire operation here to the house. Designed my new room and finished my basement based around that. Scaled back a bit, but still don't have all the room I had before, but it's nice not driving to and from downtown everyday. It was all for the best. For a few years now, I've only focused on my own stuff, and I no longer take on any outside production work.

@@RobArnoldWorld Gotcha. Yeah, that’s kinda what I was asking. Just curious if you only worked on your own productions. I am tracking with my band in a month or so and have my own studio but I don’t wanna mix my own band because the mix will be ALL guitars and the other guys will constantly be like “can you just raise me a little in the mix?….can you raise me just smidge more? Etc…. I’ve thinking about making some YT content for myself and my band after I pay off all the Taylor Swift merch my daughters want for Xmas, lol. Anyway, looking forward to your new album, brutha.🤘

@@RobArnoldWorld hey Rob, ya got Telegram scammers/trolls in your YT chat. The good news is your channel is popular enough to have them, the bad news is they are there. You might wanna make a note of it in a video, but I’d never tell anyone how to run their channel. Also, I have 2 Swifties but I’m getting mine TS vinyl for Xmas so I can intro them to some other music. 🤘

Yeah the scammers suck man. Thanks for the heads up. I did address this issue in my Kali Audio Monitors video from a couple weeks ago. Good luck with your little Swifties! 🤘@@PureRedRage

cant wait for the live show either. Will it be on blu ray by chance? Also can't wait for my shirts to come in the mail. There seems to be an exciting atmosphere around the chimaira camp that is exciting. Not sure what is to come but either way great to see the band coming back even in small doses. Cheers and happy holidays to you and your fam Rob.
