Off topic why does the army sometimes use phonetic alphabet and some times “normal”. For example you don’t go to Alpha India Tango to learn how to become an 88 em.

I was an 88M, toured in Afghanistan in 2011. Drove PLS mostly but also drove the fueler. I had a little different experience, I was in a smaller support team for my squadron (1/2 cavalry regiment) but very accurate depiction of it. My favorite thing to deliver was mail, rarely did it but very rewarding.

In 2005, I was deployed to ISAF HQ in Afghanistan with the Danish DCM-COY (Deployable Communications Module Company). We we're a NATO-unit and the only DCM in Denmark. Our mother battalion was the 1st Nato Signal Battalion. So we deployed in the NATO HQ, while the rest of the Danish detachments were in (Danish) Camp Viking inside the multinational Camp Warehouse (a few kilometers from us in Kabul) or in Camp Helmand. Our job was to provide all communication - from desk phones to satellite video conference calls between NATO HQ's. Our own supply section had only 2 guys for this deployment. An E3 in his 50's and an E7 as section leader. Since I only joined the company a couple of months before deployment, and haven't been trained properly in my new MOS yet, I was transferred to the supply section to help out. Our "car pool" consisted of 3 vehicles; 2 civilian 90's Toyota Landcruiser's with a crew of 2 and room for either supplies or 6 personel. And an old flatbed truck - for larger stuff - with a man-hole through the roof, in case you wanted to pop op. None of the vehicles were armored or issued with weapons beside our personal Colt Canada C8 carbine and 9 mm SIG P210. I was appointed in charge of "the fleet" and the actual driving. The other two guys mainly focused on administration and in-camp tasks. That meant that I - as the only one in the company - got outside the HQ on a regular basis. Every or every other day. Usually hauling official goods for the company or unofficial goods for our bar. But also i.e. going to the airport to pick up paper mail from families back home. The rule was "always minimum 2 personel in the car in the day time" and "always minimum 2 cars at night". So I got to pick someone from the other sections to bring along - as wingman. Being picked by me, was probably the only time in weeks or months they got outside the perimeter fence. While we didn't see any actual combat inside the capital, the biggest three dangers was an occasional roadside IED's, (average of 1-2 coalition deaths a month), insane local traffic/driving conditions and getting sick from entering and exitting an air conditioned car from the outside temperatures at 100+ F - ten times a day. But I loved it! I got my regular driver's license and my CDL in the Army, and in my country that is still valid in civilian vehicles. So after being discharged from the Army, I continued on hauling cargo in semi's and passengers in taxi's.

No disrespect, and thank you for your service brother. I got stuck with 88m and I was wondering when would be a good time to change my mos too 11x, because originally that's what I wanted but my eye score was 5 points off during meps so my only option was 88m, it's fine for now I'mjoining the military. But wanting to be a truck driver isn't for me . I was also told I could change my mos later that year of service, I was wondering if that was true or not?

Here’s an interesting video idea: life in a unit that’s non-deployable. I never deployed but that also had a downside. That being that some soldiers saw this as a way to an easy life. As parachute riggers, if we are emotionally compromised, we cannot do our job so some soldiers I worked with often used this to get out of work and since we never deployed, it was like being paid to stay at home or do light work at the work shed. .

Chris - don't get offended, but in the Canadian Military we had a saying " you can always tell a trucker, but couldn't tell them much". Wars and conflicts don't move a inch without Logistics, either Supply or Truckers to move the classes of Supply to the AOR. Cheers and thank you for your service as I completed 36 years in Logistics with multiple tours and been in 2 way ranges.

Antoine B yes if you fall in a FSC (Forward Support Company) where you’ll be attached to either an Infantry, Armor, Engineer, Calvary Squadron, or Field Artillery battalion. In this company it’ll be 10-25 people in your platoon called “Distro” where y’all will distribute Food, Water, Ammo, or Fuel. Majority of the time you’ll cross train as an 88M it sucks sometimes but it is what it is. This my 4th year in the Army and my 2nd FSC, but always remember nobody rocks like a 92F💯

As an 88m if your convoy gets attacked are you permitted to get out of the truck and join in the fire fight?

Typically you wouldn’t dismount unless it was needed since your in an armored vehicle. You don’t stop in the “kill zone” anyway. You push through and those that can return fire do.

Doug The Eliminator 😆 If it was a military vehicle....I was always just appreciative if someone else had the wheel. Plowing a tracked vehicle through a training field was fun, but otherwise I was grateful to the drivers.

Navy ships. They get loaded to ships and then unloaded at a near by port and then transported on semi trailers into country.

@@christopherchaos The only reason why I was wondering is that I'm currently in the process of getting enlisted and will be sent off to Fort Jackson. I'm debating what MOS I should pick 19k or 88m
