Combat deployments are classified by the mission being carried out more than the area they are carried out in i deployed to Kuwait with an air defense artillery unit and because the unit had a combat mission to protect the air space it was classified as a combat mission. Tax free pay, hazard duty pay, combat patch, the whole nine yards but I still have people ask where I was deployed to and when I tell them Kuwait they tell me it wasn't a combat deployment.

"Combat Pay" is actually two separate pays. The first is Imminent Danger pay or "Hazard Pay". The other is Hostile Fire Pay. One doesn't necessarily get both. If a Soldier is deployed to a combat zone, then they will get both. However, peace keeping missions may only have "Eminent Day Pay" associated with the deployment. The other pay incentive is "Family Separation Pay." For any Soldier with dependents (Spouse, Children, Custodial care of Parent, etc.) they will receive $250 per month after 30 days of separation from their dependent(s).

If you routinely see fireworks displays between holidays, it's probably a combat deployment. If you would consider the location as a place to visit on vacation, it's probably not a combat deployment. If politicians and general officers make morale boosting appearances for a day, it's probably a combat deployment. If you've got fixed living/dining/toileting/showering facilities and BX, it's probably not a combat deployment.

This may be a dumb question, but when deciding to enlist as an infantryman, is there a limit to how many different “advanced” trainings/schools you are allowed to attend in your army career? i.e. Sniper School, Airborne school, special forces, Ranger school (only because I am poor at wording things)
@christopherchaos
@christopherchaos 4 жыл бұрын
You can go to as many as they will end you too. A lot of the times its based on availability though. You can want all the classes but they might not be available to you at the time.

Just worry about learning to be the best grunt you can be and those schools will come.
@michaelcole6029
@michaelcole6029 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a limit. It is based on the type of unit and what they are authorized. If you enlist as an 11B and go to the 10th Mountain, that unit is not coded as an Airborne unit and you will not go to Airborne School. Only the Headquarters company of an Infantry Battalion is authorized sniper slots, because that is where the Sniper section is. Every unit in the Army is authorized to send candidates to Ranger School. However, that funding comes from the unit's training budget. There is no such school as "Special Forces School." The road to being Special Forces qualified is divided into phases. One must first go to the Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) Course, pass the course, and be selected. Yes, one can pass the course, but not be selected to attend further Special Forces training. This is colloquially called a "21-Day non-select." Once you have completed all phases of the SF pipeline, you will be assigned to a Special Forces Group.

When I was in an ASA company in Fort Carson Colorado, we deployed to Ft. Wachuca (?) TX for training. It was in a dry county, so some of the guys drove to somewhere else after our arrival to get beer. On the drive to TX, we maintained the standard 35 mph. When we took breaks, we all pulled off the road and parked. We peed on the off road (left) tires, screened by the vehicles from those on the highway. Later, when we deployed to SVN, my platoon was sent to Pleiku. Other platoons were sent to other sites in county. And, yes, there we received hazardous fire pay.

Hey Chris! This might be a dumb question, but is a rotation to the NTC or another base for a training exercise considered as a noncombat deployment or just a training exercise?
@christopherchaos
@christopherchaos 4 жыл бұрын
Its tricky. Some people will use the term "we are deploying to NTC" but its really just a training exercise. I usually consider a deployment when a unit goes somewhere for 3 months or more. But there are several other ways the term deployment can get used. Like right now we have units "deployed" to New York in support of medical operations for Covid 19.

Yes. The Multinational Forces and Observer mission in the Sinai, Arab Republic of Egypt is a non-combat deployment. The U.S. Battalion (USBATT) that supports the mission must be a combat arms unit. The USBATT rotates every 9 months I think. Each rotation changes between Active Duty and National Guard. It is not a Peace Keeping mission, it is an observer mission. This means, for the most part, that U.S. forces are static. They are assigned to remote outposts within the U.S. sector for three weeks at a time and return to South Camp for three weeks. There are opportunities for cultural visits throughout Egypt and Israel. It is the Army's best kept secret.

I have a question. And I’m sure you’ve answered it 100 times, but I’ll ask anyways. If I enlist as an officer out of college how long would I need to wait before I can try out for special forces and would I be able to choose my mos or would I have to get a special forces option contract? For example could I go in as an armor officer then tryout for special forces? Thanks in advance, you’re the man
@michaelcole6029
@michaelcole6029 3 жыл бұрын
There is no enlisting as an officer. You will enlist as an enlisted Soldier, PVT/E-1 to SPC/E-4, attend Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) based on availability and your choices. After completion of One Station Unit Training (OSUT) or AIT, you will attend Officer Candidate School (OCS). Upon completion of OCS you will attend a Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC) for your Branch, Infantry, Armor, Artillery, etc. Once at your duty station for a period of time, you may apply to attend Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS). If pass, and are selected, you will attend Special Forces Officer Qualification Course. Once you complete the Q-Course, you will be re-branched (Your MOS) will be 18A. The only way to enter the Army as an officer is to successfully complete a commissioning source which are an ROTC or a Military Academy (West Point, The Naval Academy, etc.)

I PCS'ed to 1/508th P.I.R. in Panama in 1995. The 508th was attached to 193rd Infantry Brigade from the 82nd back then. We were told that Panama was a Combat Zone back then, not War (No CIB). We did Riot Control Assisted the DEA clearing buildings for them back then. The DEA had no Jurisdiction there. The U.S. Military there had authority to protect government interests, property, and citizens up to 12 miles from the Canal, we did more but that was the nitty gritty. On my DA199, it states my V3, and V4 connections are yes. That means injury that is combat related in a Combat Zone. None of wore combat patches that I saw on active duty., Most of us were scattered to the 82nd after the 508th deactivated. What I was reading though is that we were entitled to wear a combat patch according to that whole 30 days or what not. That same Regulation/Code says you can after ETS also. If you wear your uniform for whatever reason. I like to wear my old BDU blouses to Veteran functions. Would I be wrong to sew a 508th Combat Patch with an 82nd unit Patch on them?

Really depends on your unit and MOS. Units like 10th mount, 101st and 82nd ranger bat you’re more likely to deploy then like 3rd ID The war is winding down so only a handful of units are really doing most of the deployments nowadays. Back in the day every unit went it’s just not like that anymore
