Hello from Northern Michigan U.S.A. It is interesting that the winter temperatures in Svalbard are not much different from Northern Michigan. We regularly see -30C at night and -10C during the day. The coldest I have seen is -45C. We also often get lots of snow measured in meters (feet here). I do miss the northern lights, we used see them all the time, often they would be quite brilliant. I would have a serious problem with the darkness in Svalbard though. I have a hard time with the winter darkness here.

Some people truly have 'seasonal affective disorder', so don't take it personally if the long nights get to you. You may simply be pre-programmed to hate that. OWne more comment/question: How do you keep the polar bears out of the village? Is there a fence around the perimeter? what's to stop the bears from coming in?
@checkyourfacts64573 жыл бұрын
No fence, nothing stops them except their fear of humans, lights and buildings. A well adjusted polar bear eats seals, roams and avoid humans. Of course some desperately hungry or young confused bears may search for anything to eat - so trash management etc is important. In the videos on this channel you may have seen "no guns" signs on doors to buildings. That is of course due to that whenever leaving the center of the village a gun is required by law.

Coal requires much higher temperatures to burn correctly and even then the by-products in the form of gasses and ash are filled with all kinds of crazy chemicals. Coal can have things like sulphur and mercury in it, and you would not want that condensing from your chimney in the cold weather outside your house, or fouling the inside of your hearth. A multi megawatt power station can spare the power needed to run scrubbers and coal pre-processing to ensure a complete and cleaner burn.

I was thinking while watching that y'all must live more long term. I'm in the northern hemisphere, and it is currently 22c/72f (and I hate it... 13c/55f would be more typical this time of year) and we have 11-ish hours of sunlight. It rains every once in a while (We need more! I am tired of the wildfires!), and it definitely gets hot! 43c/110f in the summer isn't unusual. But for most of us, I would say our lives are lived in weekly increments. Mondays are like every other Monday, come rain or come heat. Now, I am sure you all have work, and housework, and other things on a rotating schedule. But it seems that with midnight sun and polar nights, it would force you to live more long-term, to not get wrapped up in the repetition but to appreciate the now and celebrate change.

I am so mesmerized of the weather conditions and people living there, that is soo interesting to me! What crossed my mind is that you must be one of the first areas where climate change is actually starting to change things up for your everyday life. How do you experience that, what are the changes you see and need to take in consideration? Here in Estonia we rarely have a winters full of snow and cold. When I was child about 15 years ago we used to have a "cold-holidays" at school when the temperature dropped under -30 degrees Celsius. Now there is rarely a minus degrees during winters. That is really messing up agriculture and growing crops, the gardening tips that my grandma used are not working any more so well.

I think it's not very environment-friendly to live in a remote place like that, where everything that you use/eat has to be shipped from so so far away. Not that you say so, or that she does not care, but that would keep me from moving to such a place like that, no matter the beauty

@@nadinestaal9812 I guess if you shop at a regular supermarket anywhere in Europe products are shipped from far away. Most people will not eat local foods. @@nadinestaal9812 I agree with you, I also couldn`t do that when I wasn`t born there. Therefore I have a perspective that people using ressources for necessity is not a problem we need to tackle though, when there are crazy amount of energy wasted just for fun, luxury and comfort that makes us sick. I had this conversation with coworker the other day, as I am working in environmental NGO in system change project, and we admitted that we need to work out how much we use, where does it come from and for what we use energy and when this is not solved, the other actions are not worth tackling yet. At least you have Grim as company in case an exploring Polar Bear happens along and as you state in March, the festival of returning light lifts your spirits. Cheers Cecilia for sharing and showing us the Northern Lights which in my lifetime so far I have only witnessed 3 times so must be fascinating to watch night after night, weather permitting?

You may have set a record for thumbnails showing two handed mug holding. I'll check with Guinness, but I think it's easily yours.

I'm assuming all your firework must be shipped in? Is it very expensive? Is there reason people wouldn't use a solid fuel stove that would burn coal? The blue is amazing! It must be an incredible time.

Everyone says the same thing about your video that they are so calming and peaceful. They are. They are like therapy for me. You have truly hit on something special when you can bring this feeling into our live during such stressful time in the world. THANK YOU! Oh and thanks to Grim too! He’s the best.

I would be crazy. The men in white coats would have to take me away. I live in Oregon and I am waiting for the sun to set at 6p.m. and then later.

I absolutely adore your videos! I love travelling and Svalbard is on my list now (hopefully we can travel soon again). I have been wondering about few things. If women get pregnant there, do you (I mean not you, the doctors lol) have the equipment to monitor the pregnancy there? Do you have the possibility to have a safe birth on Svalbard? PS! I LOVE Grim!

Where do you get the wood from? Are there trees on Svalbard? Why don't you use coal, given that there a coal mines on the island?
