Quick shameless plug: The Toyota Soarer we drove in this feature is currently for sale at Driver Motorsports. It's an absolutely blast and one of the most quirky and uniquely Japanese cars we've ever driven. Big thanks to Chris and Will at Driver Motorsports for supplying it for us. Check them out at www.drivermotor....
This is the first of a multi-part series we're putting together as we talk about the culture of "JDM" that the US has developed over the years, and check out some of the awesome Japanese market cars we're starting to get now that they're turned 25. We're experimenting with a little change in our usual format, and we hope you guys enjoy it!

Not really tbh, car preservation conditions are quite poor and it's more expensive to own an old car in Japan. So Japanese people are encouraged to have a very throw away mentality when it comes to cars. Some areas of Japan experience a lot of snow, so there could be some under-body rust like what you see on cars up in the northern part of the U.S.. This 86 Toyota Soarer clearly had an owner that knew the value of this vehicle and has kept it well preserved. It's just really hard to preserve an old japanese car like this with all the things that work against it as far as preservation goes. I know this because I lived in Japan for 4 years and I know the general living conditions and economy. a 2009 and before car is considered a hoopty by the japanese government in 2019.

Here in Malaysia, most cars that we drive are Japanese cars and our local car manufacturers, Proton and Perodua used Japanese cars platform like Mitsubishi and Daihatsu back in the old days. What we did, we ordered parts, mod and convert our cars to achieve the JDM looks like the bodyparts, engine swaps, interiors and JDM audio systems. No big wings, no rocket bunnies.

As an importer its acutally not common to find an older car in Japan in good condition. Not alot if people have access to covered garages, alot of rust from snow, rain and salty air. Japanese people tend to not like pre owner cars and its harder to keep an older car road legal. If its not a future collectable like a S15, R34 its very difficult to find good condition cars.

Nice video fellas! Getting a TRŪ 93 JDM RX-7 32k miles for 13k fed res debt notes! Still has rear hatch interior clear adhesive plastic sheets… gotta replace apex seals and of course down pipes with large turbo…. Daughters boyfriends has multi stage multi manufacturer tuner. He just ordered me 19x10 ⬅️➡️ 19x12 mesh BBS mid and outer rim pieces as he already has centers. Car has been at a private auction house for 4 years in very back of warehouse and has taken 2 days of playing shift the cars to and fro, to get it out with no compresión due to seals gapped. They deliver to my house tomorrow and we dig in tomorrow night…. I had midnight blue with pan interior black piping and inlays that was also a 93 and worked over back in 1998 through 2001 until this super high super drunk guy backed into our driveway which is huge for a drive truck and rode the back end of his truck onto the roof of my car when I got out Side he was trying to hit the gas to get back off of it and all this happening was his tires were spinning on the side of my door panels and my mirrors which eventually caught traction and drug his transfer case down my windshield again down the hood that was already destroyed and I could do was sit there and watch. My wife was pounding on his doors and he didn’t even look over he was so messed up. He had went past our house turn the corner at the stop sign and then saw a state trooper and being on probation and not wanting to take the chance decided to back up from the street sign about three houses down back into my driveway and then back up the front of my car and ever since that day I’ve had multiple dreams of me getting in the car again and every time in my dream I would sit down inside shut the door and be like oh my gosh I have my car again I can finally drive my car again and then it would slowly turn into a piece of shit car that was not my RX seven and it was more like a cardboard box with a lawnmower steering wheel and go cart wheels every single time but 20 something years later I finally get to have my dream come true but with a true JDM which is the reason why it’s been in the back of this auction house for so long because they could never figure out how to get the papers and get it registered but me being a private man and knowing how to ensure myself without a A regular drivers license and needing a registration I’ll be able to do it nobody else could so the gods are shining down and looking at me and granting me my wish for finally completing my private sovereign man process a man of the land not lost at sea. Hope everyone out there as well and in good health and then sound mind peace and blessings and may God bless you all! 🔼 ◀️ 🔄 ▶️ 🔽 🔱 toroidal Insanity | |

I know this video is "old" in terms of a lot of things that happened with Toyota since then, but the 86 is actually a blast to drive. Sure, it's underpowered. But it's also *affordable*. If it had a lot more power, the price would go up on this tuner-friendly car and make it inaccessible to many of the people that it currently markets itself to. Sure, you could say "Just make an STI version" but still then, I'll go back to alienating the target market. Nobody would want to buy the standard one because nobody would want to buy the "slow 86" and be "that guy". It's rear-wheel drive, handles like a dream, and does burnouts and drifts. You honestly can't ask for much more at a pricepoint of starting at 25k.

As a Toyota car guy, I can agree it seems like they have always changed or redesigned almost evrey model for the North American market. Which is very frustrating. Even their most basic model the Corolla has always been completley diffrent from the Jdm version each generation. People think the Corolla is always made to be boring but the jdm models usually have a more sport oriented version. An example is the Eighth Gen E110. In Japan there was a sporty looking Corolla Levin B-ZR model with a 1.6 4AGE. Where as all we got was a completley redesigned looking 1ZZ FE powered Corolla.

The problem around here (Germany) is that driving an RHD car can be annoying (overtaking, parking structures, etc), and it's very hard to get a short license plate that fits the cut-out for Japanese ones (the normal German plate is about twice as wide).

Finally someone on you tube gets JDM right. I hope every ricer in the world watches this video. An Acura Integra with 4 round headlights is NOT JDM. Neither is an Alex Zanardi edition NSX. Nothing sold as a Lexus or Infinity is JDM. When some kid at a car show pops off about how a Nissan 240SX is "so JDM" I can't decide whether to slap him or give him a hug and weep over his ignorance. If you are going to be an auto enthusiast, get your lingo right. Now about that new electric Porsche "turbo"...

Not gonna lie, never heard of a Soarer before and it looks pretty sweet. I've had a sweet spot for S13s and S14s and I've wanted one for years, but that Soarer is like an S13 already 2J swapped basically. Obviously its not that powerful, probably not as sturdy, but the general idea is there.

Wait. I've a few questions: 1- Are JDM cars sold in Japan only or can they be sold anywhere else as well? (eg. Can a Toyota Soarer like this one, be sold in the UK let's say and still be called a JDM? 2- Must JDM cars be Japanese or can they be from any country? (eg. If Land Rover makes a car for Japan, is that new Land Rover JDM?)
@yongling9825
@yongling9825 Жыл бұрын
1) With grey importers, yes. Wherever a JDM goes outside Japan, it's still a JDM because it was originally made to be sold and used in Japan. 2) The term JDM only applies to Japanese cars marketed for sale in Japan, so a Japan-specced foreign car can't bear the term.

Scion was not made to show off Toyota’s sporty cars. It was meant to be an entry into the Toyota family. You buy an xA or xB for about $12k when you’re young and then once you get rolling in life, you buy a Camry or Avalon.
