Great! Thank you Ven. Nick! How to explain meditation? After 42 years of NOT showering my mind, I couldn't imagine how dirty my "glas of water" got: just chaos in my head. 7 weeks ago I started meditation after discovering this channel and just two days after starting (2x 30' a day) I didn't know what is going on: my mind gets calm and bright and so peaceful and I can clearly see, what went wrong and where to go now to develop good within myself. It is amazing. But how to explain it may fellow men? AND HERE YOU ARE! Many, many Thanks! I love the way you share wisdom! Trying to get a copy of your book. Many greetings from Germany.

Thank you 🙏. Just ordered book and journal from UK Amazon . My mind gets so distracted and I always end up giving up my practice. Your explanation of cleaning the mind is very useful. Our brain actually cleans itself too at night whilst we are in the deepest cycle of sleep with cerebrospinal fluid ( normally early hours of the morning) which is why deep sleep is so important . Beautiful explanation of meditation. As I have already shared, I have read the Dhammapada many times, so listening to you, immediately, a verse from it came to mind: "Cease to do evil, learn to do good, (the verse for emphasis), and purify your mind." I have read that many times, but when you defined meditation and gave those examples with the glass of water, that verse now has an even deeper meaning. Keep up the great work. Blessings to you and your family.

06:02 I'm aiming for no less than the highest possible state of consciousness. Have I come to the right place, master? 14:35 Hm.. I always thought we are processing the troubles of our days when we sleep. Could _dreaming_ be a kind of _showering the mind_ ? But 'sleeping' doesn't equal meditation. Right? *An exceptionally clear voice, and a good introduction for the topic* - thumbs up.

This is brilliant. One of the best answers I've seen the question of "What is Meditation?". I have some thoughts on a few words at the end though, at about 18:30 he says that meditation is a tool to "clean and purify the mind". I don't like the implications of that phrase. I'd argue that the stuff floating in the water isn't really "dirt" and we don't need "clean" or "purify" anything. The stuff in the water is just the flotsam and jetsam of life, some of it is positive and some of it is negative but it all obscures our vision. I'd rephrase it something like meditation is tool to "calm and clear the mind", which dovetails with water analogy. Meditation doesn't magically remove the "junk" that builds up in our minds, it lets it settle and separate so that we can see it more clearly and so that we can see other things more clearly. Details aside, still an awesome video.

I really enjoyed this explanation. After hearing this explanation I realize that there are more things in common with traditional forms of Christianity (Catholicism, Orthodoxy). If you replace the word meditation with prayer, it is exactly the same thing. What meditation does in Buddhism, prayer does in Christianity. I'm really curious learning about different types of meditation and see how much more have Christianity and Buddhism in common.

What best worked for me, is mixing various types of thinking and then sometimes answers came in dreams as well as popping up during the day. The thinking is not only meditative but some recquires some concentration practice. With meditation practiced as a practice of concentrating on a thing and hanging on a thing helps develop some concentration abilities. Even as a child i had associative mindpowers so that is carried on with me during this life and perhaps previous lives. However my powers arent the greatest, there are surely more powerful and my drawing skills are attrocious (my lines are all shakey i cant control my hand and it also interfers with imagination, i either draw or imagine). so i am best as a concept checker in a greater videogame designer team, but even there its worky worky not just coming to me at times. Although i feel that a number of concept i have created or combined and refined should be out there in the surface world with variable popularizational attributes too. but this is not smooth, during the days i sometimes feel a little bit down for i am unable to work alone or that i am not so able to work with creation of ideas. I feel like i will just pursue either system administration or cooking or perhaps factory job. BUT it feels more empty and even though there is reincarnation, i want to fill my life with something. not to the fullest but to some quite satisfactory level.

Thank you so much. We didn’t include it as a main tool as it’s not a main method taught By our school, however, our master teaches us that anything that allows the mind to be comfortable is a good tool to use. So you can still use the breath while following the other guidance given inside of the book regarding creating the proper balance between comfort and awareness :)

Thank you venerable Nick, meditation has been fundamental for beeing a better person in my everyday life. Thank you for sharing the teqnique and the key point, that is showering the mind. For what is happening near our neighbor country I felt the need and began to chant. Reviewing one older teaching of you and downloading the Chants. I love it. I don't understand a word, then I read the translation but it flows like water. Please pray too, you know venerable the wind comes from the north, blows cold and brings an energy that something very serious is happening. Beyond news and broadcasts and political positions... I was waiting at the bus station and that is what I sensed. Sadhu and thank you for sharing the wisdom For us to become better human beeings🌷

Thank you so much for this clear and easy to understand explanation of meditation. This is very helpful for me as someone who has recently decided to develop a daily meditation practice.

CONGRADS to you & fellow monks. It is most timely for me & Dd who is gravely suffering from mental & physical health problems. She is being medically helped & part of it is meditation! We speak of you often by discussing & using your gifts . Thank you for sharing your life's purpose. Bless us all who are on a journey of world peace.

@@nickkeomahavong01 I wish you could be here in person. I sure could use some support from one being who understands. Someone I don't have to " explain" to. I pray Gor you all!

A bit of a digression but I just wanna share that I personally hardly ever shower, probably about once a week if even that. Luckily I stay clean and don’t smell, and also I don’t think it’s healthy to use soap and shampoo all the time, and it’s bad for the environment. Of course it’s an analogy, and I agree that the mind needs a shower every single day. Just wanted to share my point of view about showering because other people might feel the same way, so we can use other analogies as well, like cleaning your room, etc.
