When I moved to university, I got accepted really late so I put my stuff in storage and moved cross country and lived 2months out of just a suitcase... the landlord had some furniture there for me until I moved stuff in...ever since then I always wondered "where is my space?" "Where does my time go?" ...only recently have I been connecting the THINGS to my problems

I’m really beginning to understand the freedom of having less and enjoying it. I went into the Kitchen this morning to make breakfast for my husband and I had room to have the toaster, the dinner plate, heating up his breakfast in the microwave, the kettle and room to move and do things without having to shove things out of the way. I really wish I had learnt it’s ok to let go and have less. I am so blessed to have found you. ❤

This is great to apply to storage units too which for many people are huge "keep"boxes except you are paying every month-and they charge you more the longer you keep the unit -and if you look at what you have in there most of it is clutter because you don't use it or want it in your house. And, if someday you did want something you were storing you could buy all new stuff for what you are paying in storage fees. Dawn and Dana in particular have helped me see my stuff for what it is, get rid of much of it, donate realizing someone else may actually need and use the item, think twice before buying anything, and save so much money. I am really grateful!

Dawn, you really hit the spot on this one! I have been on the minimalism journey for several years, and am still amazed at how much stuff I have that no longer fits my season of life. At this moment I have three bags and two boxes ready to put in the car and take to the donation center. I’m sure as I dive deeper into my storage closet stuff, there will be more trips. Another thing you mentioned is that you still want your home to look inviting, I’m glad you said that. Some times I look around, at my 3 throw pillows and few decor pieces, I feel that I am not trying hard enough to minimize. Your words were comforting. My home truly is easier to manage, keep clean and I never hesitate to open the door if someone comes. I used to quilt, but have not sewed since before the pandemic, that stuff is going (keep the tools, part with everything else). I decluttered a box of things marked “gifting”, things that were given to me and I might regift but never do. Through time I’ve been chipping away at my clothes/storage closet, and there is more to do, but because of videos such as yours, I have the courage to part with stuff I never use. …. And the closet looks so good, I can walk all the way through and find what I need. Thank you for all your inspiration.

Thank you for your videos you have inspired and guided me. A year ago(I retired) I put my hands on everything we owned in all parts of the house-took 3 months-everything was decluttered. We recently had to put our house on the market, new grandchild on the way. We busted it for 10 days(to make it generic and ready to sell)my husband finally had to do "his stuff", we have a great house. The house stays cleaner and we found out what we really use. I have learned what you have, it is freeing, we have had an amazing life and to be able to start fresh with only things we love is priceless-and more time for grandchildren!

I’ve always loved vacations for the obvious reasons but one of the added bonuses is that I just feel more relaxed in a space with very minimal furnishings, etc. I didn’t realize it years ago until I heard about minimalism and realized that my home was causing me great stress and anxiety and that is why I love staying in a hotel. I love only have the bare necessities to get me through a week while I’m away. If that’s the case why not live like this all the time? I’m on a slow journey but everything that leaves my house makes me that more happier.🥰
@jomoney465 Жыл бұрын
after inspiration from videos like yours, I have decluttered so much and it changed how I shop, especially how I casually shop. Passively roaming the thrift store, wandering off the list at the big box store or after going to someone else's house and falling in love with some new gadget, all of that was playing into my compulsive buying and my buying addiction. Now I realize it was an addiction. The pain of withdrawal, the effort it took to part with all these things that were not helpful and not supportive to my life or lifestyle, that was such an awakening, such a tough place to get to, such a long and tough road to travel, that I do not want to have to do that again. So I am more particular on what comes into my home. It reminds me of when I finally quit smoking. It was hard, it was tough, I was determined to be more healthy. I was worth it. So I did the work, I got myself off that addiction. . I can now see an ad, or someone puffing away, and know that I never ever want to do that again and one of the reasons why is because it was so tough to get away from and create a lifestyle that did not include that addiction. Whew. So going back to all the clutter, the organized hoard, that poverty mentality that told me if I don't have more stuff, enough stuff, or nice stuff like hers, that I am poor and I do not want to feel that way. I have been poor and maybe that's why the buying came from, because like you say, it's so easy these days to fill your house pretty quickly. Yard sales, online stores will deliver next day, and all the dollar stores are offering so many things as such low prices. But after letting go of so much stuff, I know now that the stuff did not define me and did not define my financial situation, and I am not poor if I don't have much stuff. Now my home is mine, it serves me in my daily life, it is what I need in this season, and if anything changes, then I can go get more stuff if I want to. But I can intentionally choose now, it's not a compulsion. Minimalism is truly intentional

I'm at a point where I have sections to go through in my basement and I want to remove everything that isn't a daily need out of the living area (box it up and see if I still need it by donation time)].

Recently I tossed my wire whisk into my donation box, bro-in-law whisked the box away to the hospice thrift store. Couple of days later I made cornbread, realized why I had a wire whisk, used a spoon instead, it was a lot harder getting the ingredients together. Had to go to credit union last week, thought about the battered woman's thrift store near the CU, ran in and got a whisk for 50 cents! Sometimes you make a mistake decluttering, but it is a mistake easily resolved. :)

The easier to entertain is the benefit I want. I’ve been moving about the house from room to room declutter for a few weeks now and have made great progress. I’m starting to feel more refreshed the more I purge my small home. I thought I parted with 75% of my jewelry last week ( which was time consuming ) and just found another box full of bracelets. 🤦🏼♀️😂

Omg!! I decluttered a ton (or I thought!!!). We just downsized and I’m so overwhelmed!! The house is TRASHED AND COVERED!! I need to carefully walk around items on the floor that were just left out from my sons 3rd birthday. Please do a video on how to declutter when unpacking!! I get the idea but I still love listening to you saying it over and over and your motivation! I LOVE YOU DAWN!!

That was so succinct and very persuasive! 😄 Your marketing background was put to good use! Thank you for all your encouragement! I wish you had been around in the 1970’s when I began accumulating all these things I’m trying to declutter now!!

Dawn your channel has helped myself and others so much! Thank you for your transparency and honesty. I would suggest you think about not putting music in the background because we are a community of distracted people! Lol ( your beautiful voice is enough) God Bless

When I started my mom didn’t understand it and questioned me all the time but the more I let go of my stuff she is starting to look at her things too. She is starting slow but she’s letting go of things which is huge for her.

I love that this concisely sums up the benefits of minimalism, busts myths, but also gives realistic expectations all in under 10 minutes!! I can't wait for the rest of the series! Your videos are so encouraging, Dawn! Did you change something production-wise in this one? I was trying to tell if you got better lighting or were filming off site with a green screen 😆

I would love to know the list of things you developed over time that you can tell friends and family when it’s time for presents. The experiences and things we may not have thought of. That’s a great idea.
