Hi @RyanMcBethProgramming I am Syrian from Dier Al-Zoor specifically. I don't live in Syria right now. As far as I am aware the people don't want to deal with the SDF as they are viewed as a second regime. Celebrations in my city were quelled down by the SDF using life ammunition resulting in deaths. The people are currently demanding the city is taken by the FSA, currently known as SNA. You are right, we shouldn't be fragmented but we also shouldn't be willing to deal with a second regime for sure.

All groups in Syria, majority and minority alike, needs to be heard and have a place in the new country. I hope you guys succeed; I'm rooting for you 👍

Egypt, Turkey, Iran, and Israel all count... but they are exceptions, and with the exception of israel, they're on the edge of a big complex muddle. I don't think the historical lack of borders is nearly as big a deal as the fact that they haven't experienced self-rule for centuries. From before the crusades until World War II, the fertile crescent has been ruled by foreigners. The power bases are in Anatolia (where turkey is now), Iran, and Egypt, and occasionally the west. Those four power centers have traded it back and forth for a thousand years. So they have no local tradition of self rule.

I have little doubt it is NOT going to begin in a badly fractured, factional Syria with hard core Islamist factions (many former or current Al-qaeda and/or ISIS fighters) leading the way. The Taliban also tried to say "nice things" at the beginning, but just like the Iranian mullahs, they fundamentally want a theocracy with themselves at the apex of power.

Only place ISIS survived was actually in the Assad/SAA areas in some Pockets towards the SDF who were waging a low level insurgency against SAA/Assad after Assad/Iran Forces/ Russian forces took that ISIS territory back when the SAA & SDF were racing each to take most ground from ISIS. SDF extirpateated ISIS in the area it took but Assad, Iran & Russia couldn't do it in their area. assad had no Friends amongst the Arabs in that Area whereas the Kurds allied with FSa of the region, the moderate Islamists of Liwa Thuwar Ar Raqqa etc & were able to win heaerts & minds & root out ISIS from Raqqa & the provincial Towns & Villages. In the northeast SAA controlled land the ISIS people had some support in some of those Provincial towns. ISIS fully controlled territory though only remained in one bit of Syria near the border next to Golan Heights. Al Qaeda pretty much only survived underground in the former Rebel Area that had been reconquered by Assad's Forces. Islamists were always going to be a strong Component of any new Nation-building. ...But you don't have to worry about Al Qaeda & ISSIS from Syria though. HTS is taking a Nationalist Islamic Renewal/Revival stance, not a Globalist Jihad one. I will believe that Assad is in Moscow when I see video of him there. Rebel groups claim to have shot down his aircraft over Homs. Flight SYR9218 an IL76 departed Damascus early morning 8 Dec. If you have a flight app, you can see that just NW of Homs it suddenly slows, changes direction erratically and begins a long slow curve to the south, eventually going off the radar.
@LeutnantJokerАй бұрын
We don't know enough. We haven't seen any pictures of any crash sight either. There is apparently a military airbase nearby they could have emergency landed on, and so far I've seen reports of just about everybody claiming they shot it down. I've seen reports the Russians did it and ABC News yesterday claimed the ISraelis shot it down. We don't know ANYTHING for 100% sure at this point.
@GoodFranklinАй бұрын
And I believe the western intelligence and news sources saying he's in Moscow over fakeable flight data tracker websites and a supposed plane crash that there is no video or photographic evidence of 2 days later.... and no evidence he was even on that flight....

I am deeply pessimistic regarding Syria, Russia's influence is entirely malign - but could possibly reduce to zero, ironically giving Assad sanctuary could do this. Turkey is supplying Islamist factions, other then that I don't see any strong groups. The Kurds wont be allowed to take power, personally I expect it will look like Libya with several rival factions...a country going nowhere.

What is this daydream about a "democratic Syria"? I challenge literally anyone to find me one single quote, just one, from Joulani indicating that he is interested in democracy and pluralism.

@mnxsАй бұрын
His recent CNN interview is worth a watch. He said stuff that is pro-pluralism, as in talking of the need for equal rights for minorities and such. But much as I hate to admit it, I also noticed a lack wrt. specifically _democracy._ He talked of building "strong institutions" in a way that surely was meant to assuage the journalist's question, but notably, he didn't actually say that those institutions would be _democratic_ (unless the translation missed something).
@phyein4815Ай бұрын
Getting communist "our societies are true democracies" and Taliban "women will be treated just and fair" vibes here. Of course they actually believe that, just on their ideological terms. Anyone thinking an islamist group born out of al qaeda will do anything but roll back human rights over 1000 years is fooling themselves.
@marcelOberauerАй бұрын
And lslamist and exAlqaeda will build another regime on Syria, thats what he means about a strong institution.
