I've given up trying to keep the true definition of this word alive. But it still burns each time i hear it used to describe camping.

It's probably best to let it go, but I guess I felt some obligation to give a definition in response to feeling that burn after reading some of the responses to my last video. 😅

I'm a proud car camper. I like the idea of a real overlanding trip, but it doesn't currently fit my lifestyle. Maybe someday, but until then I"ll enjoy exploring the area around where I live and camping out of my car.

Nice. It's not about one being better than the other. They both have pluses and minuses. I've only been on one overlanding trip, but I also enjoy car camping a lot.

Spot on, man. I'm so tired of all of these pretentious weekend campers saying that "overlanding" means whatever you want. They just say that because they know the actual definition doesn't include them, so they change the meaning to what works for them. I should add that the overlanding subreddit is probably the absolute worst offender. They don't moderate because it would affect their echo chamber numbers.

Ok, so I'm not the only one thinking this 😂

Great insights Matt! Ive been one of those folks that has often wondered why the idea of overlanding has become such a popular and marketed topic. But I guess it really does embody a real sense of freedom and the living of life in a way that is adventurous and experiencial. A journey of wonder as opposed to the everyday life of predictability, comfort, and mundane experience that so many have. I like your defined idea of overlanding as it seems to simplify the idea and emphasize the importance of the journey. You see so many on you tube that focus on the vehicle so far beyond its usefulness in serving as good transportation and living accommodation. Thats why your chan is one of my favorites! Your Pan Am trip was one of the best for showing the realistic joys and adventure of an overland journey that can be experienced by people that have a modest budget. Dont get me wrong I dig and like watching vehicle builds and the best ones are practical and ingenuitive vehicle builds just like yours. But man, watching nice folks like yourselves out there on the journey is so entertaining and inspirational. Thanks for sharing your overlanding adventures on You Tube! Looking forward to seeing you and Amy out on another adventurous journey soon!

Thanks for the inspirational comment. I appreciate you taking the time to say some encouraging words. Overlanding is something we both entend to get back to, but for now we are settling into our new home in Mexico. In the short term, I am looking forward to exploring and camping around the Baja Peninsula and sharing those adventures in my little films. I've got a few routes/destinations I'm excited about for this winter.

Probably doesn't matter how you define it, but those who do it know what it is and enjoy it.
@TheTravelingTogetherJournalАй бұрын
Definitely doesn't matter how I define it. 😅 But as long as I am chatting about it on the KZbin, I figured I'd explain what I meant when I said overlanding.

Hey Matt, this all sounds on point. Unfortunately the english language has plenty of examples of words getting over used, used incorrectly, adopted, adapted etc.
@TheTravelingTogetherJournalАй бұрын
Definitely. It's the way language evolves. I kinda made this video for myself. Now when someone on the internet refers to their weekend camping trips as an example of how I should overland, I can just give them the link to this video.😉

@TheTravelingTogetherJournal you just keep doing your thing brother! We love your work 🤙

I would probably require crossing an international border on my list... 🤷
@TheTravelingTogetherJournalАй бұрын
I think most people would need to, but if you live in a large enough country, like Canada, China, USA, or Australia than I think you could do a nice amount of traveling without crossing a border.

Commenting for the algo mate but just to chuck a stick in the spokes... what about all those overlanding influencers that have loans against their vehicles? They don't OWN them outright, they may only own 20% of the vehicle, the bank owns the rest 🤣 so if they're in debt they can't be an overlander 🫠 ... maybe "vehicle they possess" might work better hahaha 😅 anyway stay cruisey brother! Always look forward to your videos 😎
@TheTravelingTogetherJournalАй бұрын
😂 I actually struggled with this wording in my definition, but I wasn't thinking about those bank-owned overlanders 🤣 I was thinking, "you can hop in your friend's car and go on an overlanding trip with them, so it doesn't have to be your car." 🤷♂️ I didn't come up with anything better. Thanks for appeasing the algorithm 😉

@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal another great point mate. I guess a rigid definition might be difficult. Maybe we just need to remind the pretenders everytime that they're just camping 🤣
