If your painting you arange the UV like you would as if the character was flat so you can quickly identify areas to paint in substance or photoshop, packmaster is for when you bake the textures for game optimization by using the most space without wasted space after painting.

Udims are coming to Blender, I think it will be in 2.82, Ive already seen someone demo an experimental build, Its as simple clicking a button an getting an extra tiles to put the uv`s on etc

@Artisan what do you mean rebuild? Why would UDIM support require anything other than changes to UV unwrapping logic and UI?

@Artisan Most of the work is already done. Lukas Stockner said it would be done by 2.82 in the Developer's AMA at BCon2019. They don't need to rebuild anything, just update some of the drawing code and review a lot of the changes.

what confuses me about UDIMS is this; does it affect the texture space size (1k,2k etc.?) ? does 4 UDIMS tiles on a 1k texture means it becomes a 4x1=2k texture ?

basically having udims, you're no long limited in 1 tile of UV sqaure for example if you need lots of hi-res detail in your texture, you might end up having a single 32k texture, which might be pretty slow to read, where if you have 8 tiles of 4k UV square textures, it would speed up the i/o in most 3d packages

and 4 tiles of 1k textures would be equivalent to the resolution of a single tile of a 4k texture

@@starwarz8479 aha so the advantage is more that you can get higher texel density/ better organisation rather than an actual technical advantage (besides the loading of several 4k textures being faster than a single huge one). Now I understand why this is not used in games! in games any asset would never use a map higher then 4k for if they needed to they would use a combination of multiple tilable maps instead. Cheers!
