Presbyopia is caused by the loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens inside the eye. This increased rigidity of the lens results in poor focus on near objects.

🔴 Eye health QOTD: Do you have trouble reading up close? Do you use bifocals or mutlifocal contacts?

hi Doctor, i just went to America's Best glasses and contacts, this past Saturday, reason i went was because my left eye did not have the clear sight as the right eye whether i had my glasses on or my contacts i even switched the contacts from the right to the left eye to see if it was the prescription, but the left eye was still not clear , it is like the right eye still has HD720p and the left eye has 480p no HD720p i told the receptionist and she wrote it down so the Doctor must not have read my concern, so i had to ask her , she said my eyes are healthy no redness inflammation or nothing to show an illness,,,,so why within the last 3 weeks have i lost that crisp look in my sight ,,,there is more color and clarity on the right eye than the left eye,,,,,,is like if you cleaned only washed Half the windshield of a car and left the left side dirty and used windex on the right,,,,, she gave me new contacts in the offfice and she said there is the fuzzyness gone with new contacts in and i said no the fuzzyness is still THERE with the new contacts, so i asked for the other Doctor to see me and she did ,said same thing eye is healthy,,,,,,,,,,,,,, so wtf is one eye blurry even when they put that thing in your face and they clicked and said which looks better 3 or 4 ,, 5 or 6 ,,7 or 8 right eye clear left eye fuzzy, this left eye drastically changed within the last 3 weeks and the eye Doctors can not see anything,,, i am happy they said my eye is healthy just want to know why the fuzzy on the left all of a sudden....thanks love the video

I’ve worn glasses since I was 9yrs old, and now I wear bifocals . I was so happy when they started making the lenses out of plastic instead of glass as my right eye was really nearsighted. You probably know how lopsided they use to sit on my face 🤪 I’m 60 now and just grateful to be able to read and drive although I need a bit more light at night to do so. Yes, as I got "aged" presbyopia crept in like a thief in the night. Now I have to wear two different powered contact lenses in each eye. What a pain. I also have astigmatism in my left eye so when I put on my makeup, the right eye has less power and it makes seeing details in the left eye a lot harder. Whoever said that aging is the "golden years" was off the rails. Getting old is the "rusty years". Still, it's better than not being around at all. LOL.

Dont give up on your eyes, slowly start reversing your readers or only use readers when you just cant read it. Your eyes will get better over time. If reading for exended time use readers to prevent myopia. If a short reading time just try no readers or weak readers. I can now read most things no readers, before trying, nope I was frustrated, wow 50 and no big near vision problems anymore. What I learned is the ciliary muscles get weak fast but get stronger kinda fast. Gallon of water a day helps reading ALOT also.

I started having reading difficulty at about 45 (right on the median, I guess). I read online about it, and learned it was called presbyopia. I was interested to learn that it just means something like "old eyes," and the word Presbyterian has the same prefix (referring to elders who govern the church). I started with drug store glasses, but eventually went to an optometrist as it got worse. The doctor confirmed the diagnosis. The nice thing about getting a full prescription was that I was able to get computer glasses, which are just progressive lenses with a larger focal area for computer-distance viewing. I recently had an appointment to check for diabetes impact, and learned that my prescription was well out-of-date. I guess it's easy to adjust to slow changes in vision.

LOVED this video! Thank you for discussing the biomechanics of presbyopia. That's actually the exact question I had on my mind. In terms of treatment: that's so curious that the lens should continue to thicken and grow new layers without also shedding. I've read that lens replacement is technically "off label" for treatment. Where are we at with that in terms of pros and cons?

I was diagnosed with hyperopia as a teen but now that I'm in my forties I've shifted into presbyopia. I still have 20/15 at a distance (it used to be 20/10). I've learned I can't stand either bifocals or progressive lenses finding the field of vision with either too small. I don't need glasses at all for distance vision, so I bought single vision computer glasses for medium close distance and stronger single vision reading glasses for reading and fine tuned close up.

You need more power in eye to read close but less power to see far away. For nearsighted people, the power of eye is more and cant be reduced enough to see clearly far away, glasses or contacts take away the extra power and allow you to see far away, but now the power is less enough that you cant see nearby things properly. So you have to use reading glasses to add more power. If you remove contacts, you eye regains the excessive power it has naturally and there is no need for reading glasses anymore

'liked'. Thank you for the video. No, my ophthalmologist had not explained what you explained about the crystalline lens becoming thicker and hence inflexible. It was good to know. Also I didn't know that sometimes people wear a long-distance contact lens in one eye and a short one in the other, and that in Lasik surgery also something similar is done. I am assuming that this kind of combo (long in one eye and short in the other) doesn't affect depth perception much (or at all). I wonder why the same technique is not used in eye glasses instead of bifocals or progressive lenses. Thank you. Answer to QOTD: yes, I have trouble reading up close. I can read the traffic/road signs and such at a distance, but I have some problem reading text at a certain distance. (For example, the TV displays showing arrival/departure at airports), or reading a computer monitor while wearing my reading glasses. But I am not using bifocals yet. I see blurred sometimes even with eye glasses and I understand it is when by blood sugar levels are high. I have tried one of those eye glasses which allow you to change the power by turning a screw (one for each side). But it wasn't very helpful perhaps because I have astigmatism in one eye.

Rewind a few years ago just before the whole Covid thing hit, I was having trouble seeing fine text on my phone. I put off going to get an eye test done because the whole Covid thing made me nervous. Then this years my eyesight got to the point I could not see anything clear on my phone or tablet. I had no choice but to go and get checked. I've never had any vision issues in my life and always had excellent vision.. so the whole thing was a bit upsetting to me. Turns out I am Farsighted (had low diopter positive readings in my Sphere column both eyes in addition to astigmatism). I was told I needed slight distance correction. Why does Presbyopia effect distance Vision in some people?

I have a question… I had Lasik eight years ago to correct for distance in both eyes. Now, eight years later my right eye can still see 20/20 but my left eye is having problems seeing distance again, it’s 20/30 now. I have the option to get laser again in my left eye for distance, but my eye doctor said it might be better to just leave it alone, due to the possibility that I could develop presbyopia down the line. I can’t make up my mind..:it really bothers me, especially driving at night. I can’t even see speed limit signs out of my left eye when driving at night. I’m 36 right now...what if I don’t develop presbyopia for like ten plus years? I would hate to be stuck like this until then or be required to wear glasses or a contact in one eye. I’m leaning towards getting lasik again. But yeah I think I need to do more research.

When I went to an eye doctor I was told that the new prescription is higher than it should be. Should I go to another optometrist?

Multi focal Intraocular lenses also can cure presbyopia. In Europe people can have this lens replacement surgery done for presbyopia. In the US it’s usually for cataracts or like me for NA glaucoma. I was wearing progressives but now I can see all distances clearly. Only downside is halos on car lights at night. It’s costly but I will have clear vision that shouldn’t change as I age 48 at time if lens replacement. I won’t need cataract surgery later either.

I recently got multi focal lenses, and a set of readers. My presbyopia is slight (+.75), but I have high myopia (-6.75/-7.25) - to get good quality light lenses was very expensive! But they’ve really helped. :-) I use the readers when I’m at home, on my phone, doing stuff up close - the multi focal lenses are essential in meetings, and at the supermarket when I’m looking both down and at a distance. I have a standard lenses (and sunglasses) for my other needs. I’m not far off getting a magnifier for sewing, though - while my prescription makes things clear, they’re very small/too far away. I’m newly diagnosed with RP, too, so expect more magnification in my future.

Not an optometrist but a keen diyer (painter as a kid) get them to wash their eyes with sterile saline for at least 20 minutes. They may need help keeping their eye open during this process. If they don't like safety glasses, get them to try a shield or a shield and respirator. In all seriousness, paint thinner and the fumes does a number on your mucus membranes. If they say it doesn't bother them now, it definitely will later.

My reading glasses only prescription is +2.50 in the left eye and and +3.00 in the right eye. Bifocal prescription is +.75 for left eye and +1.25 for right eye and reading lenses are +1.75. Why are the reading lenses in bifocals weaker than what I normally need? I figure it has to do with transitioning your eyes from short distances to reading. I only use them at home. I see long distances perfectly still, it’s maybe 20 feet or less I have issues, especially in dim light.

I tried bifocals and trifocals. Bifocals don’t allow for mid-range vision and trifocals provide a too thin a lens for midrange. Progressive glasses made me nauseous. I am naturally a person who uses monovision….left for reading and right for long range, and either for midrange. What they heck do I do?

I used multifocal contacts for many ago and loved them. However, as my distance vision became worse, the contacts could no longer correct both ranges at the same time adequately. I switched to distance contacts so I wouldn't need prescription sunglasses and so that I wouldn't be wearing glasses during activities like swimming or sports that require goggles or masks. The down side of this strategy is it makes my near vision worse and reading glasses more necessary. I can avoid a bit of this by enlarging font sizes when reading digital material and taking my contacts out when I'm at home. (I only need them to watch television which I don't do often.) I would prefer a multifocal solution, but haven't found one that works well for me yet.

I’m someone who has both myopia (since 14) and now my presbyopia is getting worse. When I want to read something very close I remove my glasses since the myopia and presbyopia offset each other and I see clearly, but the problem arises when I have to look at the mid range, such as my computer screen where I can’t see neither with my glasses on or off. My doctor wrote a prescription for glasses that are very well, but using it two days consecutively is giving me bad headaches. And seems there is no other solution. Bifocals will not work since I have the myopia. What’s the solution?

I really get the impression that no-one is serious about actually curing presbyopia because they make too much selling lenses to everyone each year or so. The frames and lenses are ridiculously expensive compared to other manufactured goods - with most brands owned by just a few players. The whole idea of monocular vision as a solution is crazy and bifocals are really annoying to work with on a computer.

How about this for an interesting visual mess? After a lifetime of nearsightedness, now have ptosis induced vertical astigmatism with presbyopia unable to focus near or far for the cherry on top. I will not have ptosis eyelid surgery until all other options have been used up. Any suggestions for some kind of glasses prescription? What I see is like looking thru your glasses with a vertical streak of vaseline from top to bottom 'smearing' the view into a false image above the real image. Like seeing a stoplight with the real green at the bottom and a fake green where the yellow is supposed to be.
