Hey Becky, My name is Ken- I just turned 32. I've been avoiding my math requirement which would allow me to graduate college. I really appreciate this video as it put me a little at ease going into the placement exam, You are a great teacher.

Just a quick update: I took my placement exam, finished both math courses with a B+ and now I’m a college graduate. Thanks for the videos- they were super helpful!

Kenneth Cadieux, I am trying to register for a required degree program seven-week summer course. My option: Quantitative Reasoning. My plight: I am PETRIFIED!!! I am 56 years old and enrolled in a college degree program. Any thoughts concerning the toughness of the course during a concise semester verses a typical full semester? Also, due to COVID, the course will be an Online course rather than in an on campus classroom setting: i.e. face-to-face learning and tutorage via learning labs. Are these factors necessary, in your opinion?

JustAThought hey! It’s going to be okay I promise- if it’s done through the platform Pearson- the class wont be so bad. It’s actually a great way to learn math in my opinion- it walks you through step by step- why you’re doing what you’re doing- math had never made more sense to me. Fingers crossed- you got this!!!!

Kenneth Cadieux, Thanks. To be honest, I don’t think it will be through Pearson, which I am familiar with. Instead, my course is at an Ivy League institution.😲! See why I’m a bit nervous???

Good video. Sadly most Math teachers really don't know how to teach math. Just enough students are able to "get it" and move on to bigger and better things while students like me fell by the wayside. And the same thing is repeated year after year. Look at remedial Math enrollments at two year colleges; bad high school math teachers kicking the can down the road.

My Grand daughter is taking Math 123 over (again) this semester. Except this semester I am doing the work also, so I can help her if she needs it. I am not a whiz at math but I have had algebra, trig, analytic geometry and pre-calculus so I think I have enough background to help her Last year I was confused because Grand Daughter could not define what Quantitative Reasoning was, so it seemed confusing. But this year I looked into what Quantitative Reasoning is and the mystery went away. Now that I see her homework this course seems rather simple so far, not at all complicated. I found the videos and that really opened this course up to me. I kept looking for examples and explanations. Since I don't sit in the class I was not getting the classroom explanations. Then I found the videos. These are the classroom explanations that I was missing and I told my GD not to ignore these videos, that they are important and have a lot of detail and examples in them. I think this will make a big difference in her success.

Thank you for this intro! I am starting classes in January (after 30 years since graduating high school) and have been freaking out wondering if I could do this stuff. Well, I've been doing it for 30 years without even knowing it. YAY!!!! Seems like this topic is the connection between doing math and understanding why/what one is doing with math. Thank you so much for the boost. I have SUBSCRIBED + Liked = (Love your vid!) Thanks again!

Did you write the second example problem? Explaining away choice D with the 4 to 7 example is unacceptable because you have actual quantities in the problem. Choice B is as valid as choice C because it is the city with greater population is obvious. Choice D has applications in the real world with administrators that would compare/analyze enrollment to the actual population. Fort Wayne has a 250% greater general population. It is expected that Fort Wayne has more students. Without a specific question being asked, choice D is the better real-life response.

Actually super useful for people in STEM fields as the problem usually isn't doing the problem, it's creating it in the first. It helps in real life VERY often, just you already do it subconsciously.

I am a former classroom teacher and currently tutor privately and am confronted with this comment all the time. This is what I tell students: you should never pass up the opportunity to learn something as thoroughly as possible regardless of how "useful" you might think it is because nobody's life turns out the way they thought it would and you never know what might come in handy. I speak from personal experience.

While the video was interesting and informative, I felt that it did not fully elucidate the difference between understanding the math that you're doing and quantitative reasoning. You give several examples in which students simply do the math poorly indicating that they did not understand the math, not that they were not using quantitative reasoning. When you showed a student doing quantitative reasoning, you simply showed that they understood the math that they were doing. At the conclusion of this video, I had no greater understanding of quantitative reasoning, instead, I had only the understanding that students need to understand the math that they are doing, they need to understand what the word problems mean, they need to understand which numbers go where in a math problem when converting a word problem to a math problem.
