I have always wondered what R2D2 was saying. You can usually get the gist of it by whatever Luke or Threepio says to him in response, but we can't be sure, and sometimes, well, shit, he could be saying a lot of stuff.
So I made this. Hope you like it. Took me hours.

Fun fact: The warbling nonsense that R units make (all the whistles, coos, chirps, beeps and so on) are actually words to a recognized droid language! There are 8 units in the series I think, and I believe the R9 or R10, which has yet to come out, was supposed to be programmed to speak Basic.

I tried my own video of ‘what did R2 really say?’ (Episode IV) - but you took on the overall project much earlier. I think you did an amazing job (including stuff like selection of the font for the subtitles - making it easier for we the viewers to read, and occasionally emphasizing syllables in bold or italics. I agree with maybe 95 percent of your (Episode I) choices - meaning, yes, R2 REALLY DOES talk this way: his speech is sharper and dirtier than other characters, in-Universe. (R2’s droid speak must be translated, for other characters to understand him, so it doesn’t really cost him anything to have a more R-rated vocabulary. For folks in ‘our’ world, R2 is also rarely or never directly translated, so again, nothing prevents him from swearing in the Star Wars universe, even though we don’t see other Star Wars characters swearing that ‘hard.’ What’s the five percent (or less) where I disagree? Relatively minor: R2 wouldn’t make reference to earth-historical figures, even indirectly, as the story is “a long time ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.” So, if R2 wanted to express wild impatience and irritation at the way someone else screwed up, while WE might say, “Oh, fer Christ’s Sake!…” R2 would say it a different way. (Unless there is a Jesus-equivalent in the Star Wars universe, who entered the universe thousands of years ago, AND was called ‘Jesus’ AND influenced language hundreds of years later. While anything’s possible, I know of no such character who meets all three criteria.) There’s also a question whether R2 would drop the word, “man” into his speech, as many English speakers commonly do, “Who do you think you’re talkin’ to, man??” How much does R2 have a ‘regional dialect’ - and where does it come from? The films never go into exactly who created R2-D2, and how R2 learned to speak (or was programmed to speak) - and that’s probably for the best. To me, a better “fit” would be something along the lines of, “Who do you think you’re talkin’ to, asshole??” Or “Who do you think you’re talkin’ to, creep?” < When you did the translation for Episode III, you seemed to go with both of the observations that I mentioned above (and you did it first!), which indicates that we have a very similar view of R2, and also that you refined and improved the R2 ‘translation’ as you did more of these. Nice! >
