As a Christian, I agree. I was raised Catholic, and although I no longer practice in the same way now as when I was younger, the Ramadan fast and the Christian observance of Lent share many of the same particulars, both internal and external. The parallels are all the more noticeable when the observances overlap, like this year.

Some additional points about Eid al Fitr: it is a day of celebrations, to celebrate the triumph of full month of fasting, worshipping God, and conquering your nafs. It is the day where Muslims are absolved of our sins after a month of fasting, the day where we return to 'fitrah' or the natural state of creations, free of sins. Fasting is forbidden/haram on Eid al Fitr and the Prophet himself instructed us to be happy on this day, by praising God (takbir), wearing perfumes, our best clothes and saying congratulatory wishes to our Muslim community

Fasting is a form of the punishment forcing to submit. Sunni (Farsi word: سلطنتی or سلطانی) means royal lineage or monarchy. Hashem is a title in Farsi حاکم, it means the ruler or governor for a particular time and place. Hashemite is (حاکمان) the collection of the governors. The assassination of prophet Mohammad and the massacre of Karbala which was planned and executed by the Hashem of that time Yazid (same as Yazidis) made them the landlord of Kaaba in Mecca, it was owned by prophet Mohammad and his brothers. Shia شاهد witnesses [of assassination of the prophet and the Karbala massacre] was born. The current Hashem can be seen in KZbin video "Documentary on the two holy mosques" at 1:52 time stamped.

@ To be fair the Muslims are not exactly fasting during Ramadan. Sure they skip lunch, but they feast while the sun is down & this can lead to many health problems. Many Muslims just sleep during the day & stay up all night gorging themselves. This is why food prices go right up around Ramadan, demand is so high. Moderation of food consumption is important.

@ that's a very narrow of not ignorant opinion. first off, islam comes from the root word slm...which the word submit is derived from. submit and surrender to the one God. its hike acceptance not in a negative way you seem to phrase it. secondly, how can it be a punishment when there are so many exceptions like pregnancy, sickness, travel...etc and all one has to do is give breakfast or money instead of fasting. to further prove that point, 23:62 We never require of any soul more than what it can afford. And with Us is a record which speaks the truth. None will be wronged. further more, 2:256 Let there be no compulsion in religion.....As in free will, free to fast or not to fast. and no set punishment for those who do not fast. lastly, proof in in the pudding...millions of muslims fast and do not regard or feel it as punishment. on the contrary we feel it's a blessing

It's a small detail but thank you for translating "nafs" as "self/ego" and not "soul". This is an extremely common mistake in translation, but there is actually a difference in Islamic terminology between the lower or worldly self which is what makes up our base physical desires as well as usually being the source of selfishness and self-preservation, and this part of us is mortal and dies when our physical body dies. Meanwhile the soul or "rūh" is kind of our higher spiritual essence that is actually immortal and will never perish, since after our physical self dies we have consciousness both in the grave and in the eternal Afterlife, be it Heaven or Hell. The soul is where our higher sense of awareness, intellect, morality, faith, etc. is from. If you're familiar familiar Freudian terminology you could compare the nafs/self to the id and the rūh/soul to the supego. In the Koran if you're reading it in Arabic you'll notice the word nafs is almost always used in a negative light.

Ruh is better translate with Spirit, since it is the Divine blow, the highest essence of the human being, the Divine image in which we are created. While our soul, or nafs, can be trained toward unity with the Divine ruh, if left unchecked may plumber to incarnate our lower beastly nature.

Its an annual reminder to be patient, to be grateful for smallest of blessings, to regain empathy towards other human beings, restoration of faith in humanity. But for me, the best part is experiencing how my desires shrink. Hunger, need to dominate, need to argue, need to party and own fancy things, all slips away with in a week of fasting and the impact lasts for months.

@@anneeq008 one could say that building an ego is seeing ourselves as the center of the world. It also tends to deny our mortality, that is, impermanence. From a Buddhist perspective, a permanent or even an identifiable self is an illusion. Belief that there is something called “I” and that it is permanent is delusion. Yours is a good question.

Remember try not to overeat during Ramadan. So many Muslims suffer health effects from eating way too much food as if they can afford it it is daily feasting, with a break during the day. If you are one of the many Muslims that sleep during the day, it is just a huge feast all night. Not a healthy practise.

I am a Hindu and I have read the Quran and the Bible. The concept of soul in all the three religions as contained in the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads , the Holy Quran and the Holy Bible are strikingly similar as described in the book 'One God Many Names' with sub title 'We are Children of One God'. In this context fasting to purify the soul is important. This is the very purpose of Ramadan fasting. Fasting is said to inculcate a sense of fraternity and solidarity with the needy and the hungry and a sign of obedience to God.It serves the purpose of cleansing the inner soul. The same concept is found in Hinduism and Christianity.

I’ve fasted 24 hours a week for 20 plus years and do it for both health as well as spiritual reasons, but the main reason I do it is to develop spiritual or “inner” freedom. Think of the spirit as more or less equivalent to the will as opposed to mind and body. Just as you need to exercise both the body and the mind to keep them strong and healthy, so must you exercise the will for the same reason. Fasting is one of the best ways to do this, since hunger is one of the most constant and powerful of our desires. I definitely do not fast because I think pleasure is bad. Indeed, food tastes the best after my fasts. Eating compulsively is one of the best ways to destroy the pleasure and goodness of eating.

Great video as always. One minor detail correction, the lunar calendar month can be 29 or 30 days, and this is why there's always global debates on the start of Ramadan. There's the calculated appearance of the new moon to start the month, but also it's sometimes harder for countries to see the new moon when it's born, so they go to the next day.

@Amine Balaska welcome always brother! Well let me quote you, most poetic verse of Quran (in my opinion), "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things." 😊(Surah nur , 35) Asselam alaykum warahmatullai wabarakatuhu , May Allah bless you! ♥️ Ramadan Mubarak

Muslims just need to be careful not to eat too much food during Ramadan. Daily feasting during the dark hours is a standard practise for Muslims who can afford it. Try to remember to eat in moderation as a whole month of daily feasting is not a healthy practise & leads to many health problems. Moderation is key.

@@dostpektas9761 sure np. Grew up in the romanian orthodox church and it's customs are very similar to greek's and Russian's. Pious Christians usually fast every Wednesday and Friday and of course including thr biggest yearly fasting periods before a major holy day so the church has chosen a few days that usually overlap with Wednesday and Friday to declare absolution from the fasting rule when it comes to fish. Fish is a symbol associated with Jesus Christ as he's mentioned in the Bible numerous times eating it thus it's consider a custom to bring the Christian closer to Christ by respecting all these customs.

185 (It was) the month of Ramadan in which the Recital was sent down as guidance for mankind, and as evident explanations of the guidance and the criterion. So whoever of you witnesses the month, then he shall fast it. But whoever is sick or on a journey, then (he must fast) a period of other days. Allah wants ease for you and does not want hardship for you, and that you should complete the period, and that you should glorify Allah for having guided you, and so that you may give thanks.[ Surah : Al-Baqarah ]

Thank you. You touched on the most important and relevant points, as always. There is one more, which is considered by many learned scholars as a hidden treasure. According to hadith, Allah rewards believers upto 700 times for their good deeds, except for fasting. According to a hadith qudsi, Allah says: "Fasting is Mine and it is I who give reward for it."
