We talk a lot about player skill in esports, and for good reason: most of your favourite games give stars plenty of opportunity to show their supremacy.
But games usually also include a certain degree of the unexpected, the uncontrollable - what we all know as RNG.

100% cold was cheating, for someone of his caliber to make a stupid play like jumping with an awp is unthinkable. First off, you gets a kill and sees that they are rushing him, the first person has yet to clear apps and he has more than enough time to reposition and play off his teammate on short. Instead, he goes for the 1 in a million chance of getting a jumping no scope at that distance and he gets 2 kills out of that. NO pro player will sensibly make the choice of jumping for a no scope AT THAT DISTANCE. Then you look at the score, liquid was on match point with nobody on B site except for cold, they trade and get good afterplant spots. I'm just surprised that there wasn't a community uproar about this incident Jumping from CT onto A on Dust 2 is bad enough and its already so close, imagine doing that at B apps on mirage

The only skill in Fortnite is effective building, the rest is almost completely up to RNG which inherently isn't a bad thing but one of the big reasons most hardcore players don't play Fortnite, like Shroud etc. Personally, I also don't prefer RNG so I'm leaning more towards hardcore First Person Shooters.

Melee weapons have innately higher random crit chance than guns (30% if I remember correctly), but yeah. Some weapons, like the ubersaw and the skullcutter for me recently get way too many 'random' crits that it feels almost guaranteed.

@@StonedSpagooter It's not really silly when you thing about it, many players decide to learn only one character but then get to know all of its strengths and weaknesses and all of its even smallest micromechanics. I guess it just comes to a players preference whether they want to learn many characters on a decent level or just one on an amazing level. From what I see usually the one trick ponies actually end up at the top of the ladder due to their amazing champion and matchup knowledge, but if a player is aiming to play for any Esport team they will most likely need to know many champions at such amazing level because it would be so easy to ban or counter only one character

Fact of life is all card games are 100% RNG, you play the hand you're dealt. A solution could be something like, Yu-Gi-Oh for example. Instead of 5 randomly drawn cards there's a "players choice" factor. A player can choose to have 2-4 guaranteed cards pre hand, a player choosing 2 would draw 2 guaranteed card of choice with the exception of one guaranteed card of choice on the top deck. A player choosing 3 cards draws only 3 guaranteed cards of choice, no exceptions. And a player choosing 4 draws 4 guaranteed cards of choice, but they can't draw a card on their first turn. That's a example I think would work well in skill based card games to make it slightly less RNG.

I'm surprised and disappointed you didn't talk about simpler RNG stuff like the game deciding who goes first or what side they start on. Terrorists vs CT, blue vs purple, etc. I know for first tournament matches that can be decided through non-rng elements but in solo queue and casual play it's definitely a thing. Just a heads up: Twisted Fate's RNG is based on E calculations of extra gold per minion kill, W's card sequence is based upon the in-game clock and seasoned mains can keep track of it for quick surprise casts.

Outside this - there’s also RNG in Pokémon, that’s ok for me, not really in online play (I moved on from that) but for Shiny Hunting. With interesting cases on how to manipulate or just let it happen in finding a Shiny Pokémon. Or methods like Chaining like Poke’Radar or Chain Fishing. Or famously the Masuda Method (breeding). Or even utilizing a Pokémon’s Ability (if first in the party) to make a Wild Pokémon have the Opposite Gender (Cute Charm) or Same Ability as the one in your team (Syncronize). While previous games to have the normal odds of “1 - 8,192” … while more modern games reduced it in half to now be the new chances of finding a Shiny in the wild being “1 - 4,096”.

RNG can also be found in other card games like MTG Arena and surprisingly Duel Links, because of the intensity of the game, and randomness of each card you draw; even everything in Pokemon has a tiny level of RNG from the TCG to the Video Game Championships, to the recent Pokemon Go Championships.

Games with RNG can be very competitive. I don't know how Puyo Puyo (my favourite competitive puzzle game) would work without it. The entire premise is to order the chaos generated by the RNG as best you can and it is a very skill oriented game, yet no matter how good you are and how many options you try to cover, if you get a flood or drought of the wrong colours at the wrong moment, you just lose, and it is very frustrating, especially if you lose a whole match through heavy bad luck.

Overall this video was really lacking in concrete examples of RNG. CSGO is the only game adequately represented. It missed crits in pro League and early-game RNG in HS. Could've mentioned spawns in SC, characters like Faust or Platinum in anime fighters, basically everything in Pokemon, or colors in Puyo Puyo Tetris, a true gentlemen's game.

Overwatch has RNG on map designs for example Hollywood has elevators that can start at any time and Busan’s Meka Base also has moving walls.

That's not actually the case. Both the walls and the Hollywood platform operate on a timer which means you can time them if you're planning on making a play with them (something around 13 seconds in Meka Base). The Hollywood platform is the same but it's not always visible, so most pros acknowledge that while it's not RNG, it feels like RNG which is enough to merit it's removal, which I can kinda agree with. But as far as moving platforms are concerned there's no true RNG in Overwatch.

RNG like Yog Sarron or crits or even first bullet RNG are absolute garbage. It's basically let's reward a player for playing incorrectly or not lining up their shots. RNG can test decision making but more often than not it is just a dice roll. Cards like Yog Sarron are the prime example of bad RNG. There is zero decision making required and instead you are being asked to math out how likely it is that you will get the cards you need in that order. It's basically a gamble but unlike something like a 50/50 in a fighting game, you are gambling against the game not the player. And even Valve knows how bullshit it is because they build RNG protection into Dota 2. Good RNG is spawns, drops in Warcraft 3, and maybe weird fighting game character who get random moves or whatever. Even card shuffling is good RNG. All of these force you to make a decision after the game has rolled a dice. First bullet inaccuracy, crit chances all require you to make a decision then have the computer roll a dice.

RNG has nothing to do with an interesting viewing experience. Look at how hype tekken is. You can just appreciate how good a player is at playing a game. I'm not saying there's no place for RNG in Esports, but the argument made here is really strange to me

Simply put, RNG makes it so skill aren't the only important trait, requering other such as the ability to judge and make a quick decision out of some scenerio. Thanks to that when there are difference in player skill the match would become exciting as it would even out thanks to RNG. Imagine in Tekken there are a fight between a pro and a noob surely it would become a stomp that isn't even worth watching and in reality it would take a lot of RNG to even this out. On the other hand if there are two people evenly skilled even without RNG you can still have an exiticing match as both will square off to outpeform the other. But let's say both are pro but one is better compared to other. That would make it that the better player would have a much better chance to win which is really good for e-sport. But that would make the other gamer fan not sharing the enthusiasm as their idol (or whatever they are called) are about to get his shit handled to him reducing the overall exitement the game could have. With some RNG though it might be possible that a chance for comeback to exist more frequently instead of merely relying on the other making a mistake. all that's left is wether who can make use of it better. This is my opinion on the matter though feel free to disagree

@@finalfrontier001 well yeah, RNG is literally luck stat based if people have stat in real life. But RNG also force player to adapt better to the situation, wether to gamble away or take as little risk as possible. That's why pro player generally avoid luck based weapon or character because it's a hassle as it is both inconsistent and doesn't reflect their true skill (the better they are doesn't correlate to a better gameplay). However, what good RNG bring into the table is random event where quick thinking become important in order to get a hold of/take advantage of the situation. What bad RNG bring into the table is random event that just flat out give the win to one side or at best give a lot/unexpexted advantage over one. Tripping in smash for example is a bad RNG because in smash, you don't need to exchange a lot of clash in order to launch the opponent. Two or three combo is usually sufficient, sometime it would take one good combo in order to launch the opponent from 0%. What tripping does is a guarentee combo on tripped opponent. It's just too free for too much. Then try critical hit in Dota 2. It is the source of big burst damage for right click hero. How big? Depend on the difference of power between attacking and defending one. But usually getting a crit aren't enough to decide who won the clash unless you play one of those RNG based hero. I don't know the exact number of critical needed to kill the enemies but critical just multiply your attack power so if you need 16 hit to kill then you need 7-9 critical hit in a row with 2x multiplier, yes 9 because the enemy hero can regen enough health to survive the 8 crit. Crit chance are low (20-30%) but hero attack a lot so it even out. Team clash usually last for quarter to half a minute so there's bound to be a lot of hit that need to be exchanged. Yes, this RNG still suck since if two character with the same attack stat and defense stat exchange hit, the one who got critical hit the most would win. But at the same time it give the losing player time to try to flee and regroup. It can be fatal but it would need the winning team to try to get more lead so they don't have to rely on RNG luck again to capitalise on that win otherwise the tempo might be stolen by the enemy because of RNG, while the losing team would need to find a profitable engangement in order to get their tempo up again. This might not be the best example of a good RNG, but this should suffice as an example of how RNG can force a change in gamestate and thus advance the game. And what does that got to do with spectator having fun? Well anticipation of who's going to won. The match won't be decided until a big enough gap is made that not even RNG can safe them.

I love the Binding of Isaac. The amount of rng is sometimes crazy and to really "get gud" at it you have to be able to adapt to anything the game gives you, or to be able to fight without the items. There are runs where you will be insanely overpowered and clear rooms in a second or you are getting fucked over by rng and get beans

I can see why smash is in the middle of the rng scale for esports due to two of my mains being peach & Luigi having rng in their kits along with game & watch. There is also rng in some of the stage designs.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that Hearthstone is heavily RNG driven simply by emulating card games, which are inherently RNG heavy due to shuffling a deck of cards. There are ways to influence frequency of drawing specific cards throughout a game, but every card games requires the randomization of the deck as a core mechanic. That also serves as a balancing mechanism as you wouldn't want (or need) to draw certain powerful but expensive cards too often.

When it comes to LoL's drakes, it would be good if the game told us what drakes will appear during the champion selections screen, allowing players to actually make some neat and strategic picks instead of hoping that drakes will compliment their picks nicely. That change would not only remove the frustration of the RNG, but would actually add depth to the game!

The first thing I thought of was Pokémon, where RNG plays a big part in play, with move accuracy, secondary effect chance, min max damage and things like crits and flinching. Obviously it sucks to be on the receiving end, but I think it adds to the game insofar as you have to respect someone being ballsy enough to risk bad RNG chasing a best-case scenario and pulling it off.
