You are dead on that New Japan took a lot of elements from King's Road. While watching your video on King's Road itself all I could think of was how this very much resembles the style of New Japan today. Nice to see you reaffirming it now. Just goes to show you that nothing in wrestling exists in a vacum. Great video Dave.

@@DaveKnowsWrestling I don't think there is much of a debate and since both Inoki and Baba are out of both companies and the heat isn't really there these days no one should be mad by pointing out the fact that Gedo and alot of the wrestlers in NJPW are very Kings road/NWA influenced in terms of booking and in ring storytelling.
@shunichisaito3133 жыл бұрын
Actually, New Japan is not real strong style anymore, but it is only " Entertainment Style" unfortunately so I stopped watching New Japan recently. If you want to see " Real Strong Style" , you should watch Pro Wrestling Noah today, especially, GHC Championship of Go Shiozaki in 2020, and Kenta Kobashi 2000 until he retired.

Great video Dave, I've always felt ark style/ Royal Road Style was merely a combination of strong style and Kings Road depending on the wrestler and how take on the style. In my opinion KENTA was a Strong style worker that faced off very well against King Road style wrestlers (or less SS style influenced) And I always felt Okada was a Kings Road wrestler that faced off pretty well with strong style performers.
@DaveKnowsWrestling4 жыл бұрын
You do have a fair argument on KENTA and Okada I totally agree with. And as I said in the video I kinda feel that way about the style too, but I see a few more differences. Thanks for the support

As someone who was born in 1998, didn't start watching wrestling (WWE) until 2006, and didn't get in to puroresu until a few years ago I can say going back and watching matches that: 1990-2000 AJPW and 2000-2010 NOAH were the greatest years in wrestling! It's everything I wanted in wrestling but never knew or realized that I wanted it: SUPER hard striking, shoot grappling, legit submissions, brutal suplexes and slams, and above all intensity and hungry for competition and no remorse personas!

The absolute ultimate Royal/Ark style match I can recommend would be Misawa vs Kobashi, for the GHC heavyweight championship from 3-1-2003. It's all there, the two heavyweight aces, building into a longer, more brutal match and the debut of Kobashi's super finisher, the Burning Hammer

Great vid dave, spot on with everything. I've always been drawn to royal road/ark style. It might be controversial but I dont think it can be denied how much 00s noah has influenced modern day njpw. It's just a shame that noah suffered so many set backs, hopefully there on a more secure position after ddts parent company took over. They've always had a great in ring product there issue was creating new stars. As far as recommendations go, jun akiyama and Kenta kobashi wrestled the best that promotion had to offer so od say start off with matches featuring them and branch out from there, it's hard to go wrong with noah in any generation really.

You mentionned NJPW taking different elements of King's Road in its modern style, which is true. But I wonder, is there a specific name for this style, in the same way this one that was the topic of your video had one?
I've been saying it for while, modern NJPW seems more like something that guys like Misawa promoted back in NOAH, while (based on the last time I've watched it) I've noticed NOAH nowadays seems more like something Inoki would have preferred to promote. It's interesting to look at.
