I appreciate the fact that many agencies in the helping field are realizing how secondary traumatic stress can affect the helpers and are also ensuring that their employees are engaging in self care.

It can also affect teachers. As a Special Education teacher that works with emotionally disabled children who have been victims of severe child abuse and neglect as well. What we witness or learn is astounding. (That's why I watch Dr. Grande!)

It was interesting to consider how counselors can experience secondary stress after being exposed repeatedly to a client's traumatic details. I think it is important to have a balance of various clients and also for counselors to seek mental health counseling for themselves if they are experiencing symptoms of secondary stress.

I initially thought that this would be vicarious trauma, but i'm glad for the distinguishing factors between the two to clarify it.

Burn-out from trauma was very interesting to hear as a separate concept. It was also interesting to hear about secondary trauma to mental health professionals, because it is not something that is talked about much. I learned more in detail from this video that having repeated exposure to a client talk about traumatic experiences could interfere with "delivering services" to others.

I liked that this video raises awareness to counselors experiencing secondary stress, and also gives helpful tips for seeking self-care. I agree that there should be greater widespread awareness on this issue.

I knew that as helpers we would be experiencing some type of trauma when meeting with clients, but I did not know that it could actually be qualified as Secondary Traumatic Stress. Repeated or extreme exposure to aversive details of a traumatic event are likely in a field where we encourage clients to speak their minds freely of whatever is bothering them. Great video.

It is important as counselors in training to be aware of how stress affects us. When we notice stress within ourselves, it is important that we practice self-care. If we are under stress and don't practice self-care we run the risk of burnout.
@janicedixon20516 жыл бұрын
I agree. I never realized the importance of self-care until I graduated from undergrad. The demands put on us as students, daughter/son, husband/wife, employee, friend, etc. can be overwhelming so in order to be effective as a counselor we have to take care of ourselves first.

Im interested to see the frequency of mental health professionals being diagnosed with this disorder, as well as research regarding to the risk factors or traits of them.

a week ago my mum told me that when my sister was very little she and other kids were abused when they were is daycare. they would film them and bring them to an abandoned mental hospital and do things to them. My sister doesn't remember anything but the cameras and the abandoned mental hospital. They found out about this after one of the kids, M. went home to her grandparent and said what they did to her and she talked about my sister. Their families fought for them to go to jail but they literally didn't get any sentence because "the kids are not a reliable source" and because they didn't have enough evidence. since my mum told me i can't even look at my sister without crying and i can't to anything because i keep having these things were i imagine what happened to her and i start crying every time. ive also been feeling more anxious than usual and at night i can't sleep, and when I can i have nightmares..what should i do?

I agree that secondary traumatic stress can seriously affect the work that a counselor can or can not do. Self care is important in all careers and necessary in the helping field!

Thank you so much for this. I work with abused and neglected kids and I have just realized that I have secondary traumatic stress. I am physically and verbally assaulted every day by the children that it has come into my outside life. I have nightmares of kids beating me. A friends 5 year old tried to hug me and I freaked out because I thought he was gonna hit me. How can I deal with this?

This topic is very important to all individuals involved in the human services professions and they should learn self-care strategies. I learned a lot about this topic when taking courses for Trauma Informed Care.

Secondary traumatic stress could impact mental health professionals where it affects their work. It is important that if this happens that the mental health professional uses self care strategies.

I have often wondered how I can listen to horrible events regarding people and while feeling empathy don't struggle emotionally near as bad as when I hear of mistreated animals. Concerning the latter, searing images stay with me for days and days.

Experiencing that right now after looking at too much violence on the internet and news. I need to stop. I could never even watch horror movies. Thanks for the video and information. I'm gonna avoid these things and look at more healthy things, or just nothing.

Wouldn't encouraging clients online to share what real positive progress they are continuing to make in beating all of the odds to improve their lives help prevent secondary traumatic stress? It is so rewarding for example how a child at risk over a long period of time later succeeds so well beyond all the expectations of professionals that were at one time involved in the decision making process because they had at least one person in their lives who continued to do everything they could to be there for them. Just knowing that a person is doing that can make all the difference in the world for a child at risk.

I need to ask you a question Is it possible to chain different types of abuse such as physical, financial , sexually and parental abuse. Using this to control someone even after leaving the abuser. I need help, I think this is happening to me. I dont feel safe anymore . I feel like i was imprisoned and still am

Secondary traumatic stress is key factor into why counselors need to practice self-care and and work on their self-awareness. Knowing your growing edges can help, but if prolonged exposure exists therapists can begin causing more harm than good.

Great vid. Thanks for the insight. My question is how do you change professions if you're burned out? I've sought out help and nothing seems to work. Partly because I don't have good insurance to cover mental health and EAP only allows a few sessions per year. I feel so stuck!

Okay... but you can’t get PTSD from playing Episode. You can’t develop PTSD from playing a game, or reading a book. Saying you have is kind of mocking the real struggles people with the disorder faces.
