Section 8 of the Housing Act of 1937, often called Section 8, as repeatedly amended, authorizes the payment of rental housing assistance to private landlords on behalf of low-income households in the United States.
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers - Generally, very low-income families (50% or less of AMI) are eligible. However, low-income families (80% or less of AMI) may be eligible if the families meet other specific criteria (e.g., elderly, have disabilities).
The Section 8 Program is an initiative under the purview of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program aims to provide access to safe, clean, and affordable housing for very low-income families, those who are elderly, and those who are disabled.
There are four basic types of Section 8 voucher programs, each administered just a bit differently.
· Tenant-Based Housing Choice Voucher (HCV)
· HCV Homeownership Voucher
· Project-Based Voucher (PBV)
· Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA)
The program typically issues vouchers that individuals can present to landlords who have agreed to be part of the Section 8 program. The program then pays the landlord directly for the value of the voucher, while the tenant makes up the difference. Though this is the basic model, housing voucher programs are administered locally by public housing authorities in a variety of ways.

Is there a way to email you? Or I'll just put it here. My local housing authority has been closed. But I can no longer live in the altitude because of my current diagnosis, COPD. So as I was looking, we can move anywhere. But they say to apply to your local PHA, they are not excepting pre-applications? I feel stuck, as there are plenty of open waitlists, AR, KS, etc. but not Colorado where I live? How do I move forward? Thank you in advance!!!!

Senior housing starts as early as 55 in my state. Though some is 62+. I mentioned to a coworker that she might want to apply for subsidized housing now because it can take 5 yrs on a waiting list. She made the call at just the right time. A new complex was opening and she got one. She was thrilled. Until she retired she would pay the max which is about $900-$1000 a month ($600-$1,200 savings). After retiring, it would be on a sliding scale. She was beyond happy and moved in a month later. You just never know, so apply at your earliest age possible.

Got my 79 year old father approved 3/26/24 after they realized they didn’t upload his last signed document in December 2024. It’s frustrating to be spending money on applications and not be selected. Hello. Before receiving a voucher, I rented a place in Pennsylvania that was for moderate income and managed by the hosing authority for that county. I ended up having to move and owed them money (just over 5 years ago). I have not been in a position to pay them back as of yet, and I now have a housing voucher and wish to port BACK to that same county in PA from California. I can't seem to get a straight answer on whether or not I can do this. Would you happen to know this answer?
